The HUGE disconnect between youth sexuality and sex education

Wilson High School students Folami Irby-Mottley, 18, and Leslie Cameron, 17, testified that the nurse at their school responded icily when they asked for condoms. "She didn't seem very positive," Irby-Mottley said. The students said they asked for the condoms to see whether student rumors about the nurse's cold behavior were true.[Riiiight - Ed.]

Students had another reason for passing up the free condoms available at school. Durex condoms, the brand widely distributed by the Health Department under a contract, are considered lame and more likely to pop or break, students said. They said they prefer Trojan or Magnum.

So, um, these kids aren't exactly talking about abstinence only.

Editorial Note: I initially had the term "yawning chasm" in the thread title, but that seemed inappropriate.

Yeah, Durex are awful. I've had a few break on me and yet they always seem to be the ones given out by schools. I complained and the response was "they're fine. you must be using them wrong."

Although I am guessing that there's a different reason that students claim to prefer Magnums...

They should have asked the nurse about fisting.

Re: The HUGE disconnect between youth sexuality and sex education

If schools are going to provide condoms, they have a responsibility to distribute the very best least likely to break because STD's and pregnancy are very serious.

If they distribute an inferior brand then they are potentially liable when failure occurs, even if not legally found so (hard to prove in courtroom).

As far as the nurse "being cold" when distributing them - so fricken what?

Part of her job is distributing them, and she does fulfill the job. But distributing condoms is not the main purpose of her job, and students have plenty of other options.

Hell, some teachers are cold when they teach, that is their primary job and their students don't have other options, and if you tried to fire them for being cold, the teachers union would jump to their defense and be right to do so. Some people are cold. Part of growing up is learning how to deal with them.

I'll have to agree with res on this one. If this is a thread about a school nurse being "cold" then there isn't a lot to go on here. There are far better ways to frame the debate about sex education in schools.

I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you.  That amuses me.

True. As long as the nurse fulfills her obligations, I don't see the problem.

Besides, she's probably just jealous that all these teens are getting some, and she's not. The kids need to band together, find a way to get her filled out like an application, and see if that helps her relax a bit. wink

Re: The HUGE disconnect between youth sexuality and sex education

I agree, and I wouldn't call this a "huge disconnect," or a "yawning chasm."

A huge disconnect is kids who think you can't get pregnant the first time, or if the woman is on top. This just seems to be kids bitching about someone they don't like.

What's the school nurse suppose to do? Is she supposed to be like the candy store owner in Willie Wonka and sing a song?

"The condom man can and he mixes it with love and makes the world feel good."

I don't feel tardy...

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

Re: The HUGE disconnect between youth sexuality and sex education

Well, the article in the original post was about how there is a general problem in sex education in the DC school system being inadequate and antiquated. DevoDoc chose to quote from some girls at a particular school about their problems with their school nurse, but that was only an illustration of that point.
