Re: Flip4Mac flips to Silverlight

Maybe because Flip4Mac is a WMV codec plugin for QuickTime, hence the SilverLight.  I also think Microsoft doesn't even bother writing WMP for OS X anymore and instead endorses Flip4Mac.

I guess if you don't care about being able to play future Windows Media using QT they could have just not supported Silverlight.

Re: Flip4Mac flips to Silverlight

AFAIK, the WMV plugin and Silverlight, are two different and independent plugins.

It seems to me that they (MS or Flip) suddenly decided to bundle the two together. No better way for MS to spread its Silver ilk upon the Mac crowd, IMO.

Re: Flip4Mac flips to Silverlight

I noticed this the other day when Flip4Mac updated. Maybe this is a dumb question, but why is it bad to have Silverlight? For that matter, what exactly is Silverlight?

Silverlight is Microsofts answer to Flash. Basically just another way to deliver "rich content" which I always interpret as meaning annoying crap, ads and noise on web sites.

Re: Flip4Mac flips to Silverlight

I find it not bad, really. And as a lightweight browser plugin that can well handle streaming content (was required to watch NBC's Olympic coverage, for example) and is being developed with streaming movies in mind, it's about a lot more than 'crap on websites.' It's garnered some notable customers to date, and is nearly ready with Version 4. It's maturing reasonably well.

Re: Flip4Mac flips to Silverlight

IIRC, Silverlight is also required for Netflix streaming.

What I want is being able to make photosynths on Mac OS X:

You need Silverlight to watch them. At least you can do that on the Mac.

Ya, people were optimistic when Shockwave came out too, and we all know how that turned out.

Not sure if this is what you were catching on to, but this describes Flip as something of a Silverlight authoring tool: http://on10.net/blogs/benwagg/Silverlig … Flip4Mac/. And that to me is "hence the Silverlight".
