What do you like about Windows 7?

I'll admit it. I've tried it. It's not half bad.

One thing I've seen as an improvement over the other versions of Windows made in the last 14 years is that they've FINALLY taken the GDF "Delete" command off of the Recycle Bin.

Anyone else.

What do I like about Windows 7?

That is finally installed.

It only took me 3 days, and numerous attempts to install it on Fusion. FINALLY, I found a post that said you couldn't do an inplace upgrade from XP, but had to do a workaround that was left over from Vista.

Nice going Microcrap!

I had to do a clean install on a blank virtual disk and then reload ALL of my programs from scratch.

Just goes to show you that Microcrap STILL can't program it's way out of a wet paper sack. Its managers have NO consideration of their customers. I can only imagine the howls of outrage from the corporations that have held onto XP and bypassed Vista, when they finally try to upgrade all of their computers to Win 7.

Reimage them and leave the servers (with all the files) on Server 2008 where they belong?

As a victim of single point of failure, I'm not sure this is the way to go.

Yes, we have multiple locations of servers. The single point was that the fail-over to switch between the server farms did not work, leaving people with nothing to do for most of a day. To be sure this was with Windows Server 2003 servers, and once the above problem was fixed it hasn't happened again (but I don't know if we've ever lost our connection to the server farm since that previous failure).

Re: What do you like about Windows 7?

I used Windows 7 RC long enough that I can't really remember why or how it is different or better than Vista. A bit snappier and less bloated, I guess but I didn't find any major problems with Vista so I cannot say that is a big deal. I can tell you after running the release version of Win7 for a week why I like it better than XP - after a week I would have had to reformat and reinstall XP at least once, possibly 2, 3, 4, maybe more times if the first reformat/reinstall didn't take. None of that smurf with Win7, it just works.

Here is what I like about Windows 7: it is not made by Apple. It is horribly prone to malware as have all the versions of Windows have been.

Haven't used it yet, can't comment directly.

OK, you had to give up L4D, RO and the rest for a spell. That's inconvenient, but not fatal... to a non-gamer, anyway. But remember that XP came out a full 8 years ago this month- 10/01- and Vista already had major changes to the driver model, memory handling and much more. I'm not sure that upgrading from XP to Vista's platform model update version, out yesterday, would be much easier, as that already requires Vista SP2 as a starting point. How easy is it to upgrade in MacOS from say, ca. '95, to ca. 2003?

Source beyond "common knowledge?" Going on faith in security matters can really bite one in the hinder parts, and even OSX has AVware in it these days. Pretty rudimentary stuff, too.

Re: What do you like about Windows 7?

My boot camp installaiton is for gaming, and I didn't touch that. I wanted to upgrade my production installation on Fusion. Basically none of the crap instructions provided by MS are true, accurate, or remotely connected to reality. They tell you, that if you are upgrading from XP follow steps 1, ..... X. However, step one doesn't even work. Trying to install it on Fusion as a clean install wouldn't work either. I had to use a work-around devised to install Vista.

I have to admit that MS is very consistent in being technically accurate, but not useful in instructions or Help files.

We can agree on that. Their help is seldom helpful. Most of us hereabouts, I'd guess, learn what we can and DIY.

On the original topic, I am looking forward to the new 2D API stuff, and 7's ability to keep everything in video memory, without needing to keep a copy also in system memory. XP should have that; I'd likely have a 1GB videocard now. The Vista equiv (of the other stuff) is

The Windows Graphics, Imaging, and XPS Library enables developers to take advantage of the advancements in modern graphics technologies for gaming, multimedia, imaging, and printing applications. The new features include

• Updates to DirectX to support hardware acceleration for 2D, 3D, and text-based scenarios
• DirectCompute for hardware-accelerated parallel computing scenarios
• XPS Library for document printing scenarios

I think that includes hardware-accel vector grapics and sprites. Think how well '80s videogames would run. Star Castle, anyone?

Re: What do you like about Windows 7?

I wonder if the old tricks to get Vista upgrade DVDs to do full installs, still works on 7. Thats what I did with a $70 Ultimate DVD with my Mom's laptop. It wouldn't upgrade my XP install. So looked up the trick online then installed it normally. Instant full install. Just went to show how much M$ is making off full install discs when all they need to do is change the programming a lil. Course they didn't do it very well as folks like me found out.

NightCougar, that's what I had to do for my Fusion install. Here is the link that was provided on the VMware forums.
