HELP! Upgraded to 10.5.8 and now Maxtor won't show up?!
Just upgraded my fathers iMac G5 to 10.5.8 and now his Maxtor One Touch II won't load up on the desktop! I've tried Firewire 400 & 800 and USB. They all appear in the System Profiler, but not Disk Utility or any other program. I've tried plugging it in to my MBP with 10.6 with the same results.
My father is a photographer and has 35,000+ pictures on this drive and deadlines! We really need to get this working! HELP!

Without going into real troubleshooting, download the 10.5.8 combo upgrade from Apple, to your desktop. Reinstall the upgrade from the desktop. Before you do that, repair permissions.

= best chance of the fix.
sometimes the Apple Updater doesn't get you all you really need when updating the OS.
I have seen most people that experience probs of the sort you are having cured when they went to the website and downloaded the updater and installed from that.
i truly believe the Apple Updater only downloads and installs what it "thinks" you need whereas the Combo Updater you go download with your browser is a more complete download so the resulting update would resemble the results of a total clean install of the version you are updating to.

Unfortunately It wasn't working when I did the 10.5 update... I'm going back to 10.4 to see if that will clear up the issues.

If it does not... I've seen drives independently fail during upgrades. I'm not sure in which cases it was just random, which ones it was just gonna happen no matter what and which ones the increased activity of installation pushed them over the edge but it's been known to happen.
Double check if it's the drive or the case if you can. I've had cases fry before too and it looks the same.

And in your case, even if the drive won't mount, you might still have the data intact and the problem being the enclosure rather than the harddrive itself. If that is the case you might still be able to recover the data and even the drive itself using another enclosure or a set of cables that allow you to interface the drive to the computer.

This is an instance where redundancy is important. He should have a multiple backup system. Hard drives are relatively cheap. He should have a couple. A Drobo setup would also work. Otherworld computing has enclosures for multiple drives in RAID 1 format also. RAID 1 uses two drives, and mirrors the contents on them so that if one fails you have a good copy on the other.

From your description I would guess that the hard drive failure was only coincident with the OS upgrade--I'm not certain but most upgrades are highly unlikely to be the cause.
If the title you've given yourself is right: try the following:
1) borrow the use of a PC (yes, that's right) if you already do not have access to one,
2) buy and download SpinRite from Gibson Research Corporation,
3) use its setup feature to create a boot CD or floppy with SpinRite,
4) remove the drive from its enclosure and install it in the PC (while it can work with USB and FireWire connections, SpinRite works best when directly connected via P/SATA),
5) boot the PC with the SpinRite disk from step 3 above and follow the instructions,
6) let SpinRite go through its paces. This can vary from a few hours to a day or two or more depending on the nature of the problem and the size of the hard drive.
7) if SpinRite is able to recover anything, IMMEDIATELY back up the contents of the fixed drive. This is not because the drive may fail again soon--it may, but not necessarily--but this a good practice in any case.
Note that SpinRite accesses your drive directly and when doing its stuff it does not care which OS was used to format the drive--it works equally well on drives formatted via Windows, Mac OS or Linux. It's a good tool to have when troubleshooting PC problems, but it does come with a money-back guarantee. And, yes, I have bought my own copy for my own use.

Yeah, I used to have three external hard drives and never used Time Machine as all I am REALLY concerned with backing up are my Music /Photo/Movie. The three drives I swapped this info to included a 250, 320 (USB 2) and 160 GB (Firewire) drives (everything is offloaded from my primary machine, a MBP - drives daisy-chained via one of two four port USB 2 hubs connected to AEBS [N]). My 250 Lacie went (2nd one to fail me prematurely) I just received a 1TB (USB 2). Since this drive is so big I think I will use it for Time Machine and the stuff I already mentioned. Everything else is recoverable via disks (A.K.A., software).
smurf, if I lost my iPhoto files, that would be most of my kids photographic history gone. I'm not taking that chance. I think I'm finally set up for a while.
So presently I have 160/320/1TB drives backed up to Time Machine set to the 1TB. I Think I am set for a while.
