Somali pirates demand $7 million ransom: "the amount is not big.""

Ransom Demanded for Yacht couple

Explaining the decision to set the ransom at $7m, the caller said: "Nato operations had a lot of negative impact here.

"They have destroyed a lot of equipment belonging to the poor local fishermen.
"They arrest fishermen and destroy their equipment.
"In defiance to our local administrations, they illegally transfer the fishermen to their own prisons and prisons of other [foreign] countries.
"So when you consider the damage and all the people affected we say the amount is not big."

Looks like Somali pirates get international news and opinion broadcast to them.

I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

They need to be careful, somebody might get ticked one of these days and send them an installment on the $7 mill in cruise missiles.

Nah, they don't seem to have enough infrastructure for that - at least on shore. I'm thinking MOAB's in a few key ports would do the trick though. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ … s/moab.htm

Every port that holds pirates gets one or two. Pretty soon, the word gets out - pirates == massive death and destruction.

I still think we need to send out a few decoy ships with special forces guys. Bored special forces guys with lots of exotic weapons alongside the usual assortment of rifles, RPG's, etc. Just to liven the place up a bit.

Call it a shark feeding program.

Terrorism is a perfect solution to terrorism.

I figure you're probably joking, but wanted to say that in case.

I am sure that the reason they have been so fastidious about not harming captives is so as not to give an excuse for such a responce.
As long as there is a high likelyhood that someone will be ransomed out in good condition there is little justification for an armed responce.

Are you advocating the use of "Q" ships?

Such an old ploy!

Worked in WWI. Didn't work so well in WWII. On the other hand, Somali U-boat technology is untested.

Of course, they haven't considered that the navies involved there right now are treating them with kid gloves. If they start killing hostages, or don't bother with the hostage taking and kill people outright, then the response will take a decidedly nasty turn.

They might even find that summary courts on board ships will occur with executions following. Then as things ratchet up, no Somali boat will be exempt from boarding and possible destruction as a pirate vessel.

Is hanging still the standard sentence for a pirate?

Considering how much military hardware costs, $7 million will likely get you one or two, tops.

To tell the truth, in the context of larger world problems, I find it hard to give a rats ass about these pirates.

They're a touch over a half mill each I think.

Doubt that figure includes the ordinance package.
