How does the magic mouse know it's my fingers and not a pencil erasure?

My best hypotheses involves the fact that a pencil eraser doesn't generate heat. Your fingers, unless all bloodflow has been completely cut off, do.
There's what you love to do, and then there's what you get paid to do. Those two things are often different.
