Re: I hate shaving!
Oh, and where does one find a straight razor? I can't even find an older non-cartridge safety razor.
You can get them a lot of places. I got mine from Bergdorf's in NY; they have them by request. Also specialty knife shops.
Online @ knifecenter.com
Yeah, and I'd recommend the soap and brush, as well, especially with the straight razor. Make sure the brush has the proper kind of bristle, though. And you might want a heated soap dish.

Re: I hate shaving!
Yeah, I would say that I don't have sympathy for you guys, except that I do.
I'm a chick, and I know this is going to get some comments, but I don't shave my legs. I shave my armpits when I feel like it, which is once a month or less.
The funny thing is - I haven't shaved my legs in probably 8 years at this point (as a teenager, I shaved for a while) and the hair really isn't that noticable. I don't wear shorts, but wearing skirts (bare legged or with tights) and cropped pants is fine.
It irks me that girls learn that being hairy is dirty or gross. That irks me a lot. If you shave? Fine, go for it. I'm not going to tell you you're wrong. It should be a personal choice, not a societal standard.

Re: I hate shaving!
I hardly ever shave my legs, either. If someone is going to judge my character on something as stupid as whether or not I shave my legs,..then I judge their character as dumb-ass.

Re: I hate shaving!
That's why I wear a goat and try to avoid shaving as much as possible. When I do shave, I use an electric razor set so as to have a perfect constant 5 o'clock shadow look a la George Clooney or something.
Man..you got that right. I shave twice a week at most, with a Braun electric...then a Mach 3 razor. Since I am so anal and a perfectionist, I don't want any stray hairs.
But if I wasn't in the labs so much I would just grow a damn beard. The damn beard covers and bunny suits are jsut oo much to have a face full of hair and work comfortably.
But when I can I try to get away with the electric and 5 o'clock shadow.

Re: I hate shaving!
Stray hairs = bad to be sure. I think I hate the patch just behind my jaw most... I'm always afraid I'll leave stubble there so I check time and time again. I can't stand it when I see people who look like they forgot to shave half their face!

It is interesting, though...

There was a /. thread on this about 6 months ago, that's about 10 times longer.
Anyway, Tallgeese, I know exactly what you mean. The same thing used to happen to me, and I use an electric razor! The thing is, though, the more you shave, the less it hurts, and by now I could (conceivably) shave every day.

Re: I hate shaving!
Damn! I have really thick hairs and relatively thin skin. Even with a Mach3 my face is covered in blood and it looks like I shave with a belt sander. My towel looks like I used it to clean up a murder scene. Why is there such a damn obsession with male facial hair removal?
Then for Chrissakes don't shave!
Instead go around lookin like OBL!
Aint no big deal!

Re: I hate shaving!
I got myself a fog free mirror for the shower; so shave towards the end of my shower. The whiskers are nice and soft and I haven't cut myself since I have started to do this.

Re: I hate shaving!
I'm Italian and Irish, so I have baby soft skin with thick facial hair. It's a f'n pain in the a**. If I shave too close, shave in the wrong direction, shave too soon before my last shave I'll break-out and get ingrown hairs.
What I usually do is use an electric saver with electric shaving lotion. Then I clean up all all the loose ends with a mach 3 and some aloe shaving lotion. Next I take a shower since it stops any bleeding and helps to prevent ingrown hairs. And finally I put some prescribed topical clindamycin w/ alcohol on my face to further insure that I don't get any ingrown hairs.
It takes me quite some time to shave everyday, however everything comes out squeaky clean if I make sure to do all of that.
Man... I miss the days in high school when I could shave upward with a 2week old Bic razor and no lotion.

Holy crap, that's quite a routine!
I feel more and more lucky as I read these posts! I pretty much just slash the razor all over; up, down, sideways, and I never really bleed. I use shaving soap and all, but I don't do anything special.
I did once cut my nose right above my lip... that sucked. But I don't remember anything more serious than that.

Re: I hate shaving!
ugh, I must have an unusual situation then and should be grateful.
It must be hereditary but I can't grow a beard if my life depended on it. Yeah, It's really annoying. not even a decent goattee or even sideburns. I can generally go for a week without shaving and you can't tell, after two weeks my pathetic peach fuzz is more evident. Oh well I guess I'll consider it a blessing, it's a real time-saver in college
By the way, in two months I'll be 20

I wouldn't mind that.
I think by the time I'm 40 I'll be able to walk around naked and nobody will know... I'm getting hairier every day...

Re: I hate shaving!
I didn't shave from the time I moved to Europe in '83' til just a couple years ago when we installed a swimming pool (we're in the pool business). It wasn't leg hair that was embarrassing, it was the, er, little curlicues sticking out from around the legholes of my bathing suit that prompted the defoliation. If you don't shave your legs or pits, the hair stays pretty downey and it really isn't that noticeable (I'm fair haired though). Maybe I have had bad rashes from shaving, Nair, etc., because I haven't shaved all my life. I can shave under my arms okay, but nowhere else.
Oh, and the same goes for makeup, which I haven't worn in ages, and my skin at my - ahem - advanced age compared to most of you, looks much better for it.

Re: I hate shaving!
I detest shaving, my face is always on fire afterwards. And when the hair grows back it's always very itchy and painfull with ingrown hairs. Sucks a lot. I HAVE to wait untill the hairs grow back to say 1/4 inch because if I don't my face hasn't healed enough for me to shave agian, and I'll be in twice as much pain as the first time.
I've been looking for a less painful alternative to shaving, and I've tried gel's, creams, single/double/tripple blades, electric razors, no difference to my skin.
I think I'll try this stuff below.
