PowerMac 6500 weird behaviour?

A few days now my 6500 decided to refuse writing stuff on the hard drive. When I try to drag some files from either a floppy, a CD or a Zip the finder just "unexpectetly quits" The same thing happens when I try to duplicate something already on the disc. I though the Hd was fried but when I restart with the Shift button pressed (extensions off) it operates normaly. When I disable all the extentions and preference panels in Extension Manager and restart it still has the problem. I think it could be an extension conflict but then again why the weird diferences between restarting with shift pressed and manually disabling all the extension in extensions manager.
Any one with similar problem of know how to fix this is appreciated.
Oh I already zapped the RAM.
Thanks,
petikas

It's gotta be something that the extensions manager is missing. Root through the extensions folder and dump anything that you don't need. Post a list of the Extensions Foldercontents here if you would like some help.

About Apple Guide
ActiveX Controls
AIM Menu
Apple Color SW Pro CMM
Color SW 1500
Color SW 2500
Color SW Pro
CSW 6000 Series
(get rid of the last four if you don't have a color stylewriter)
ColorSync Extension
Default Calibrator
(do you use ColorSync? It's require for some scanner, otherwise get rid of it.)
Desktop Printer Spooler
Desktop PrintMonitor
(desktop printing has been known to cause problems in the past.)
IdleTime
(this dead skull gives me bad vibes, and it makes my computer crash)
ImageWriter
(now come on, you don't have an imagewriter...)
Internet Access
Iomega Driver
iTunes Extension for Mac OS 8
(what's this? did Apple write it?)
LaserWriter 300/LS
(I've never met a Laserwriter 300 I liked...)
Printer Share
(you can probably disable this one, too)
QuickDraw? 3D RAVE
QuickTime? VR
RealAudio
(remove Realaudio preferences too and reinstall the player - I've seen corrupted Realmedia stuff send the system for a loop)
StuffItEngineShell
(I've never seen this one before... disable it and reinstall Stuffit Expander)
StyleWriter 1200
URL Access

The 6500 has an old Rage graphics chipset. If you can find the original CD for your computer, reinstall the following files.
ATI 3D Accelerator
ATI Driver Update
ATI Graphics Accelerator
ATI Resource Manager
ATI Video Accelerator

Move all these to your Extensions (Disabled) Folder. Also, try removing all the Microsoft*** and MS*** extensions and libraries, and either reinstalling the latest version of IE (5.1) and/or Office, or letting those program's self-repair features handle the work for you. A corrupt library could well be causing this kind of problem.

On the other hand, if none of that works, I regret to inform you that you may have to reinstall your OS. There is some critical system file which is insanely corrupted, and it needs to be replaced. If you have the install CD for the version of the OS you are using, just install it over what's already there - it'll probably work. If it doesn't, you'll just have to do a clean install. No big deal, either way. It'll take about 80 minutes, worst case, but it's a walk-away job. Get a good book or spend time with your significant other.

Long posts are okay when it's extension conflict diagnosing time!

Here's the contents of my extensions folder, just for fun.

LaserWriter 8
ATI Mac2TV

Re: PowerMac 6500 weird behaviour?

Well there is a problem with that though. I bought the computer on line and I don't have any original discs. I have the system 9 discs that came with my powermac. But I am slightly concern that System 9 might be too much for this system with only 128Ram.  On top of that I am leaving the states for the xmas today and I was planing to give this computer to my sister for her computing needs. She thinks she she is ok with the LCIII so the 6500 is much better than what she currently uses. Besides she only does word processing.
Oh well I guess I'll install 9 after I give it to her.
note-to-self:remember pack the discs for os9

Re: PowerMac 6500 weird behaviour?

OS 9 will run fine with 128 MBs of RAM... however, a 6400 or 6500 wil not boot with 9.2, so as long as your OS 9 CDs are from 9.0 or 9.1, it'll work...

keep in mind that what you're doing is illegal.

Oh, and BTW, the install CD checks the ID of the computer when it installs, so the install CD won't work... the 'Restore' CD, however...

Re: PowerMac 6500 weird behaviour?

Could be something simple. Do you run AppleShare? Is the drive shared? You may have corrupted your AppleShare prefs and User prefs. Kill'em (won't hurt). Your Mac maybe confused on who to give access to the drive. Thus it dies when you try to copy. When you boot with ext. off this disables the sharing. Thus the confusion is removed. Since sharing is part of the "base ext." set, the prob comes back when you boot even with this simple ext. set.
