hehehe if it's big and a van... smile
I'll like it.

has to have an automatic transmission too...

I wouldn't mind a hybrid or an all-electric with a nice plug (and a tug-reel cord like old vacuum cleaners) and solar panels!

Re: What kind of car do you have?

Who was referring to the insight?

The insight costs about $21,000 new with a CVT and A/C. With a manual it's about $19,000. You can get them on eBay for ~ $10,000 - $13,000 for a 2000 or 2001 manual with A/C (air conditioning is the only option).

Yes, there are more cars that are more cost-efficient. But for an environmentalist like me, there really is no choice.

No, I was refering to the Hybrid Civic. It's just like a regular Civic but uses even less gas. The Insight is just too small, but the Civic provides decent car size with the hybrid system. I also like the Prius. This all kind of stupid for me to ba talking about as I hope to rarely ever drive a car after I leave home. Driving just makes me too nervous.

Re: What kind of car do you have?

The prius is as ugly as its name, and there's a discernable jerk when the gas engine kicks in. Because it's a heavier car and has pretty bad aerodynamics compared to the insight (look at it....see the kamm back? the wheel covers?), it uses the electrc motor only, not the gas, at low velocities; therefore, when the engine starts up you can fell the car shudder for a second.

The Insight uses the IMA system to start the gas engine and run ti in lean-burn mode (about 120 MPG) when it's not needed. So does the civic to a lesser degree because it's heavier. Also, both Hondas are prettier than the Toyota.

Get the civic. See, I didn't need any more than two seats and 16 cu.ft of cargo; the insight is fine. And you should see the people's faces at stoplights, gas stations, etc. Gets more looks than a ferarri.

I really like minis.  They have more personality than most cars, and they get decent mileage (28 in town, 37 on the freeway).

Re: What kind of car do you have?

www.geocities.com/ian_sikora

I'd link them to right here, but Geocities would just show them as broken links...

1996 Ford Escort 2-door hatchback (last year of body style and generation)
88 HP 1.9 L inline 4 cylinder engine
3 speed with overdrive (4 forward gears) automatic transmission
Cayman green clear coat metallic
About 28-30 MPG, depending on how many cars I want in my rear view mirror...

Plenty of room with the seats folded down, my bike fits in fully assembled, my skis fit right in all winter. (except when they were on my feet and I was instructing or tearing up the slopes...) Peppy enough, it may mot be my Dad's BMW, but it moves just the same. Back looks better then the front I think, but oh well. I got it July 2002 with 68,500-something miles on it, I noticed it hitting 81,111 miles today. The only time it ever failed me was one cold, cold night around the ski mountain i work at where temps hit like -20? F and I had allowed the tank to get to fumes before refilling. Sure enough condensation got in the line, froze up, and no amount of dry gas did anything. Ended up towing it to a garage to warm up. Other then that it has been a tank going through snow, mud, run down back woods roads that could pretty much be considered trails, more crap then it should be have to take. Although I won't admit to anything, let's just say it can beat a friend's 1994 4 cylinder Camry in a race. (conducted legally, of course...) It was neck and neck for a while, but when I hit third gear, I was gone.

I also have a 1981 Audi 4000 4E sedan silver 5-speed that's been sitting since 1999. My parents are the original miles, the odometer currently reads 315,000 miles, actual miles are higher, second engine. This is the car I came home from the hospital in when I was born. I think my Dad is making me get rid of it this week coming up though. So I've got some junkyards to call.

As for parent's vehicles:
Dad: 1993 BMW 325i sedan 5-speed, black/black leather, loaded, performance exhaust to make that straight 6 sing.
1997 1/2 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, loaded. Dark blue/gray leather (exterior of 97, interior of 98) 5.0 liter V8, as my grandfather said when he owned it "it'll pass anything but the gas station..."

Mom: 1999 Ford Escort 4-door 5-speed. Blue/blue cloth. I won't admit to anything again, but let's just say said automobile model is capable of burning its tired trough 1st, 2nd, and most of 3rd gear if done right.

Step Dad: 2002 Ford F-150 2x4 SuperCrew Dark green/gray cloth interior. Nice truck, being sold in favor of a smaller 1/4 ton truck, model undecided.

Step Sister: 1993? Ford Tempo, gray. Yeah...it has ummm...wheels...and seats...that's good. It's still kicking despite being wrecked and abused. So I shouldn't diss it. It's named Bob. It was free to her and cheap to my Step Dad, and we've gone to many a junkyard ripping apart donor cars when we were fixing it up for her.

Re: What kind of car do you have?

I drive a 1990 1500 Chevy Suburban. Its got a V8, with 269,000 miles on its factory engine. my dad has kept her in real good shape since he bought it brand new in 1990. The only non-stock additions are some Smitty-built running boards on the sides, which arnt in this picture.

This picture was taken in 1991. Im too lazy to go take a new picture of it.  Its not mine yet, I get to drive it when my parents dont need it untill my sister gives me her honda accord after shes done with college (1 month).

http://homepage.mac.com/fortysixandtwo/images/rambusjeepand%20camaro.jpg

The Jeep my folks gave to my sister after she blew up her car (the camaro.) both are long dead now. As I said, this picture was taken in 1991...so i was about...ehm, 6 at the time..I really wanted that camaro...damn my sister for blowing it up...arg sad

I talked my dad into geting some new 31 inch tires. right now its still got the same 20 something inch sized tires. Me and my friends call it "The Rambus" because the license plate is "rambus1". My parents invested in a company called Rambus and liked it so much they put that on their license plate. Anyhow, thats the Rambus, my ride for the time being smile

Re: What kind of car do you have?

eek 31 inch wheels? eek I've never seen anything bigger than 22" on anything short of a dump truck. How does your car even support tires that big? i mean, that's over 3 feet when you add the tire width to the wheel width.

God. The Insight has little tiny 14" wheels that are half-width and inflated to 48 PSI (lower rolling resistance, so more gas mileage: also, their slipperiness lets you chirp the tires in first gear, and even peel for a few dozen feet uphill or on a sandy road).[/b]

Here's my truck:
1992 GMC Sierra, 2 door, ext. cab
5.7L 350, auto trans, 285 HP I think.
176000 something miles. Averages about 15mpg,
pretty good considering the mileage.

That would be tires with an overall diameter of 31 inches, not wheels,
they're probably 15-16 inches. You should have gone for 35's man, you
might have had to lift it a little too, but it would have been that much
cooler. I've been trying to convince my mom to lift her Excursion and put some's 35's on there but she doesn't seem to be going for it, oh well :-)
I plan on lowering my truck when I get a little more money, and then
getting some 20" wheels.

Re: What kind of car do you have?

Yea, my dad doesnt want to lift the suburban, so we're going for the biggest that will fit on there without needing a lift. I really want to get about a 4 inch Skyjacker lift on it, but its pretty expensive. The Rambus is going out soon anyway, and my old man wants to sell it before it craps out..

Re: What kind of car do you have?

Rambus is such a cool name for anything!

I want to name my next car DDR after the kind of memory my Xserve will have  :angel2:

I want the liscence plate "hamner" as that's the nickname that my mom and I have for me... she's Mrs. Hamner, and dad's Mr. Hamner...

that's all and well considering our last name is Wiegersma  blotto

I also wanted the plate 'moof' but I forget if that one was taken already in Arizona...

(moof is another family nickname/joke/game we have)
(mom wants teh liscence plate "MrsMoof")

Re: What kind of car do you have?

If I got custom plateson my Insight, I think they'd be one of the following:

EATVOLTS
--it is part electric after all
144*VOLT
--that's the voltage of the battery pack
D*CELLS
--the pack itself is made of 120 special rechargeable D cells
024*CD
--A little harder to get, the drag coefficient of the car is 0.24 (by comparison, an average sedan's cD is about 0.33, and a range rover has a coefficient of about 0.45 - lower is better. the only car with a lower cD is the GM EV1 electric car, now discontinued, that had a cD of 0.18)
WHIR
--the sound the car makes when you start it up. No grinka-grinka-grinka-vaROOM. Just HUMwhirwhoosh--------(silence).
ZOOM
--It really is fast and sporty, for what people think of it. Certainly not an econobox. Anyone have a GEO metro? Blech.

that's all I can think of now. Maybe I'll come up with some more relating to the idle-stop system (in which you come to a stop or decelerate below 30 MPH, take your foot off the gas and put the clutch in OR put the car in neutral: the engine shuts off. Pull your foot off the clutch or, from a stop, shift into first and the engine silently starts up (thanks to the big-ol' 10KW IMA motor - no little 12V for me!))
