my dock is bigger than yours...
No, seriously, it is. I have so few things on it that it is bigger and wider, and pointing at it makes it get even bigger... oops, nvm, that's a bit too pervish...
REALLY seriously is Mac Addict's SETI Team
check it's ranks here: http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/stat … ype_0.html
For those of you who have no idea what I am rambling about, MacAddict has a committed group of SetiSearchers who have a screensaver on their Macs (or PC's) that download packets of info from an observatory called Arecibo (or something like that). Their Macs, during time when nobody uses them, use the processors inside to process the observations from the telescope. Then the results are sent back. Each set of results is called a work unit, or WU for short. MacAddict is in a worldwide competition to see which group/community can process the most units. Will you please join this grop and help MacAddict show the world what a powerful force the Mac community is?
To join, all you need is a comp and a email address! The Seti program works in OS7.5.5 through OSX!
The problem is that member participation has been really really lagging lately on this. MacAddict used to be able to proubly say that is was always in the top 10. Just recently I joined, gaining two comps plus my personal mac to process the work units. I then got the bright idea to check the group stats page. To my horror, my beloved magazine user base seti group has lowered to 11th place. I immediately put the PCs onto processiong unit 24/7, or at least whenever anyone is on them, but I also realized how horribly behind we were. I mean, come on guys, the war is over, focus on the future, can't we get some new member supportage here? If we can boost MA back up into the top 10, then i'll be happy. I mean, when you look at the other groups, they are all PC weenies. And for those of ya'll who are in the MacObserver group, or other various groups, I appluad your efforts in helping to demonstrate that power of the Mac community. But my plea to you all who are already signed up, redidcate yourselves to this wonderful and potentially useful project, Make your Mac a part of something, really big, bigger than your dock, and bogger than mine... (ok enough with the dock already), but seriously, I encourage everyone reading this to join MacAddict's group. Unless something really wonderful or really terrible happens, MacAddict should be the 11th spot on the page URL'ed above. Simply click the name, click join, and put in your name and password. I had to have my password emailed to me (FYI), so you might have to get that same thing done before you can join this search.
Anyways, as of this posting, I have 10 WU done, and I hope to get more done... talk this up people, just think, with a mass influx of new users on their powerful new G4's we can start jumping up in ranks. lol, don't forget, old macs can process workunits too!
For those of you lazy people, who would just like to download the app and set is as your screensaver, and not worry about sign up for a group, you can just put my username in the user account box, and that will automatically sign you up under macaddict, OK? my user name is kerrdude2003, but feel free to set up your own account. Only use my account if you are unning short p time and don't want to go through too much hassle.
Sincerely,
Travis
PS. if MacAddict (as in the staff) want to do a web article about this, that's cool. BTW, the MacAddict Seti site needs updating... whose job is that? niko? kris? rik? hmm....
BTW I jst started receiving MacAddict again, it pains me about how long I went without it... ah... issue after issue of bliss...
part 2
BTW, if anyone knows how to do the command line version in OSX, which is supposedly faster, let me know,I'm trying to figure it out...

part 3
or would the X11 version be any better?

Re: my dock is bigger than yours...
Well, I just decided to join Team Macaddict! I decided to put my G4 867 to work, but that is only half of my story!
At school, I am building an openMosix cluster, basically a bunch of computers that are all networked together, working on the same task.
Currently, it contains (2) 200Mhz PPro Intels and (3) 100Mhz Pentiums. No great shakes ehh? But hey, it is pretty cool, and Mosix can be scaled very well.
We have LOADS of dinosaurs laying around, unused, just sitting there. I am working to incorporate them into the cluster and make a reasonably powerful machine. As summer break is fast approaching (3 weeks!!) I *might* be able to let the cluster run over the summer.
Not anything amazing, but it is Very cool watching a bunch of machines all working together! Load balancing baby!
