Network not networking
I have a LAN at home and I have some questions about network features. I just have one hub and a powermac G4 and an old graphite iMac. Both have Jaguar and rendezvous and I am just confused about some things.
iChat doesn't reckognize that anyone is on rendezvous when both are logged in to rendezvous. So that is confusing.
Also I can't seem to share my printer. It's connected to the iMac through USB and I clicked the "printer share" button in sharing in system preferences and it doesn't reckognize that there is a printer on my G4. I've readded the printer on the iMac and I've browsed through all the printer connect types or whatever in Print Utility on the G4 still nothing. Can I even do these things on a little LAN? I am just confused.

Re: Network not networking
Does the hub have a DHCP server on it?
If no the you have to manually set IP addresses for the 2 computers
If yes then check to make sure that your getting a vaild IP address from it.
If you are getting a IP address can you ping the other computer?
Sounds like to me that the computers don't have IP addresses set, now I thought that rendezvous was supposed to get around that but maybe not. I know that here with my home network that when the computers all have IP addresses then rendezvous works in iChat and I can printer share.
if you have to manually set IP's then use numbers like this.
for your G4
IP address = 192.168.1.1
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
for your iMac
IP address = 192.168.1.2
subnetmaks = 255.255.255.0
Hope this helps
Good luck

Re: Network not networking
I have a cable modem too, so that provides IPs with a DHCP server. What else could be causing this??

Re: Network not networking
That could be the problem, because if each of your computers are getting a IP from the cable provider, they may not be able to see each other over the network. I'm not too sure on this, but that is what I believe may be happening. The best thing I can tell you is go out on boxing day and see if you can get a deal on a Linksys Router, you'll get a firewall with it and your cable company will only see one computer hooked up to it, maybe costing you less?

Re: Network not networking
but even when I set it to manual it still didn't recognize, can it just be my switch or maybe my iMac isn't configured right. I'm formitting it right now and reinstalling jaguar, cuz my G4 works at school so it should work here too.

Re: Network not networking
looks that switch or hub wont do the job right, i also recommend u get a router, i got one at compusa for $60, netgear, and both my g4 400 tower and dell PII 450 both network fine. with the hub only one computer is on the web which might b causing it not to network well, with the router, ip's would be split into both computers from your single assigned ip, thus making both computers network more thoroughly. btw, im using OS X (10.2.3) and XP, if that helps.

Re: Network not networking
I suspect CND Codewarrior has it correct. You need a router that does NAT, so you only need one IP from your cable service provider. I like my Xsense MIH-130 router. There's plenty of others that will work fine also.
I'm moving this over to the networking forum. I suggest a search over there as this question has been asked dozens of times already.

Re: Network not networking
You didn't say if anything else works. I'd suggest trying to ping one machine from the other, since that'll tell you if you have any IP connectivity at all. If that doesn't work, then nothing else will. Getting a router/firewall with a built-in multiport switch is a great idea, and I've had very good luck with Linksys boxes (their small 4-port model is pretty cheap these days - around $60 I think). Once you have IP connectivity, then start verifying the various network configurations of both machines, such as the sharing and firewall settings. You should be able to do what you want, and it shouldn't be too hard.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Re: Network not networking
Did you use the same OS X cd to install on the 2 macs? Could that be the problem?
