Gigabit Ethernet over cat5e cables?

I've read (I forget where) that a cat5e cable is a bottleneck between two or more computers.  Is this true?  I don't rember if the source was reliable or not, so I want to check with the MA Forums members.  Is a cat5e ethernet cable capable at effectively handling gagabit ethernet?  If not, how much better is a cat6 cable?

Re: Gigabit Ethernet over cat5e cables?

AFIK CAT5e is fully capable of suporting Gigabit Ethernet. Every tech spec I've read say's that anyway. However, anytime you connect more than one device to the network performance suffers. Unless of course you have a gigabit compliant switch/router.

Re: Gigabit Ethernet over cat5e cables?

All you need is a Gigabit Switch (i take a switch over a router but that's another topic and depends on ur purposes) and some cables. The AFIK CAT5e is capable of it as Say_What had mentioned so the quick answer is yes, although I wouldn't use the cat5e cables if i was gonna go gigabit

Use Cat 6 for Gigabit.
Cat 5e, 100/duplex. Cat 5, 100/10. Cat 3, 10.

If you have a lot of money use cat 6 cable. If you don't, cat 5e will do the job. Except if you want to do a long cable run then you need to use cat 6

Re: Gigabit Ethernet over cat5e cables?

Gig a byte networks are much more sensitive to installation practices and the type of cables that are used then are 100 megs and 10 meg networks. To say that cat 5 will work is a it may or may not. The way the network is wired is real critical. The terminations and the amount of leads left at the end really does not matter at 10 megs but sure does as the speed goes up.

If you are doing this from scratch and have a lot of machines to do cat 5e is not the way to go. There are is a lot of information on the data cabling standards out there.
