What's your connections?

Well until we get a server we might have to find other ways to do things so im just wondering what all your connections are, and location in the country. Reason being, I might have a lil idea festering up my sleeve :shifty: big_smile.

Try to put down your downstream and upstream speeds if you can. Goto www.dslreports.com/tools to find out if you dont already know (works with any connection tho) .

Heres a lil example:

56k (5K+ down, 2-4k up) - Pacific Coast

Re: What's your connections?

I have Cable (With Shaw), and I live in Calgary...
Downstream: 1383 kbps
Upstream: 788 kbps

Use the first location on dslreports, the second one doesn't give you your upstream.

i typically get 4-5k downstream, but im not sure about upstream. im not on my comp right now, so i cant go check at that site.

what's your idea, NC?

Re: What's your connections?

I'm guessing the idea is to have members with reasonable upstream speeds host on a rotating basis. Still, even with a decent upstream on say cable or DSL, isn't the max players going to top out at around 6 players? I'll check mine when I get home tonight too though, be kinda curious what it's running these days.

I suppose we could post running servers in the IRC channel, and members can just check there to see who's got a game going day or night.

Re: What's your connections?

Actually I was thinking of a more grander thing (possibly after school gets out for everyone..ie: something to start the summer off with), but the rotational server idea is something I hadnt thought about till now.

Calgary is up by great lakes area right? That is slightly centralized but its still a bit north. Your upstream is the real important part for hosting. 788k is pretty good too. I'd guess 6-8 on that, dedicate about a 100kb to each player. Probably could handle more but then slower speed players might suffer a bit. Maybe that could handle 10players max if everyone had high speed connections.

Calgary's a bit more west than that.  big_smile

Unfortunately, I go away for the summer, so I wouldn't be able to do any hosting of any sort from about late June to about the last week in August.  sad

Re: What's your connections?

DOH!!! I was thinking of another city. Probably had Toronto on my mind or something (Leafs fan wink big_smile)..(actually I like most of the Canadien teams).

Well 246 up, that can run maybe 2-4 on that stable. That might do for the idea I got festering in me noggin. Still want to wait and see what others ppl have, specially Mr. Happypants big_smile.

Btw, just out of curiousity, how many active ppl are there in this division? Just a rough estimate would do.

Re: What's your connections?

Sorry, I was assed out last night & crashed early.  sad I'll punch it tonight and post results. I'm East Coast btw, Baltimore specifically.

I s'pose you can count me as "active" although I haven't assumed the tag yet. Still hanging on Duel servers, trying to perfect my l33t skilz. Riiiiight.

Re: What's your connections?

i am active in the division! i have a 56k, so i know that prolly wont work for whatever you have in mind, NC, but in three or so months i'll be in the pacific northwest (portland, oregon) with access to high-speed internet through my new college. im not sure on all the details for speed and the like, but ill be sure to let you all know. til then, im stuck bumming bandwidth off the more fortunate in the form of beggin others to host.

oh, btw NC: cool new avatar!  big_smile

Re: What's your connections?

I feel your 56k pain. Cept mine has been amplified by terrible packet loss for months (check thread in general forums to see). If my connection could just be back to what it used to be I could competitively play on 56k (reason ive been out of action in UT for soo long). Its not hard as long as ping maintains around 200. On the main UT server I used to have a 200 ping. Then there was that DOS attack across the whole net months ago. Ever since around that time. Nothing but packet loss when I play there. Ping has gone from 190-200...up to 240+ sad.

Well at least ya got great d/l speeds Happypants. So far seems most of everyone in here is on the Western part of the country too.

Ok since I know most of you are wondering about my idea, might as well let you in on it. I was thinking about a lil JKII tournament to start off the summer, ya know, get things active around here. Trouble is, we dont have a server yet so it would have to be someone hosting it.

Now originally I was hoping to find something more centralized in the nation so there wouldnt be any real big advantages in pings. But this issue can be worked around.

Next issue I looked at was the max number of connections that someone hosting could handle. So far looks like the best we can do is either Duel or 2 vs 2 DM. Well maybe more than 2 vs 2, but i've been on servers with guys trying to max out their lines and it doesnt get pretty if theres problems, or just standard net slowdown. So 2 vs 2 max would leave some bandwith open for such unforseeable problems. Plus it would help 56k players having more bandwith available.

Ok, thats the idea which was festering big_smile. Chewie, knew about it cause I mentioned it to her first. She's just been under a lot of stress with school lately so I figured i'd start collecting some data now and see if it might be possible.

I didnt want to get everyone's hopes up till I got a better idea of what something like this would take early in the life of the division. I have tried other tourney ideas over the years in the UT division with no success. Another reason I didnt want to get hopes up wink big_smile. Course back then I was thinking far too much on a grand scale big_smile.

As for the avatar, thanks smile. Just spent a lil time in Elements to make that up. Figured id take off the Ghost Recon bit since theres no hope of seeing a division around here if id be one of the few supporting it. So I cut out the JKII logo from something and pasted it in, instead of Recon. Also redid my sig while I was at it, felt having it that way brought out more of the background behind the image. If you can guess where the image is from you win a virtual donut big_smile.

Re: What's your connections?

I'm moving in a week, so any speeds I give now will not be applicable for long.  Like most of you, though, I have a really good downstream but not a very good upstream at all.  When I host a game on GR I can usually can handle at least 6-8 people without much lagocity, but whether that'll be the case after I move, I'll have to see.

I'm moving to Portland, Ore, so it seems most of us are on the West Coast, with a large population in the PNW.  That might help us... .

Re: What's your connections?

Sounds like a great idea NC! How about this, whenever one of us can host a game, post your IP and server name in the IRC channel. That's the first place I'll look for a game when I get on from now on. (Of course, that would mean keeping IRC open 24/7 and looking for the info. Hmmmm, maybe not such a great idea)

Okay, how about this: Make a thread here titled "Currently Hosting" or something like it. Only post in it if you're starting a game, that way it'll stay managable and spam-free. Maybe we can get some tests going and see what our connections can handle. Maybe do some Duel-only games & some FFA with as many slots as you feel comfortable trying. I'd say up to 8.

Re: What's your connections?

I can get a really great upload speed but it would be on a G4 400 with an ATI Rage whatever.

I prefer the capped upload with the G4 867.

Re: What's your connections?

Ive removed the "only ops can change the topic" thing in our channel (# MA-JK2), so if anyone wants to host for a while, feel free to put your IP up as the topic, just make sure not to abuse it or else that wont be around for a while, and there are ops in there for a good portion of the day at random various times, so be careful with getting too creative (NC!!! wink ). also make sure to not have your ip up there when you arent hosting wink

What!? Whys everyone looking at me all of a sudden?! :shifty:

Just cause my IRC channel on UTC may of had G saying that he had soiled himself, doesnt mean i'll pass that onto your prestigious JKII channel, oh great and powerful wookiee leader :shifty: big_smile.
