Is Subway healthy?

I know the Doctors Associates certainly think so, but what about you? I think that as far as fast food goes, Subway is better than most. Their vegetables might not exactly be garden fresh, but they're fairly good for a fast food chain. I find Subway is a nice, convenient way for me to get a vegetable injection. It feels a lot healthier than eating Burger King or KFC or anything else like that.
If you don't like subway, then substitute your favourite sandwich chain.

I ate it almost every day for the whole summer last year, and I'm still alive.

Compared to other junk places, Wendy's vegetables seem pretty not disgusting.

hidden evil, feh.  People have been eating bread for centuries without reaching the levels of obesity which plague modern America.  I think breadd is a hidden wonder which Americans are just starting to really discover.  The hidden evils, as you mentioned, are lazyness and the assumption that watching people blow up on TV will help keep the fat away.

Health nutritionists would have us remove everything tasty from our diet, but that's not the solution.

Considering how many people have jobs that require they tap on a keyboard all day, it would make sense to take this laziness into consideration and change diets accordingly. Or some people might like to be lazy so if they aren't burning all that hitler fat off, they should change their lifestyle so their laziness doesn't result in a worst case scenario.

Or people might have night jobs, which can really make them turn into balloons if they don't watch what they eat. I guess that's another case of laziness to take into consideration. Whoops, I mean lazyness.

That was too much to read.  I just want to look at a picture of the new and improved pyramid.

And I'm not worried about anything I eat.  I've got the metabolisim of a 15 year old crack head.  Can't gain weight even if I tried.

Re: Is Subway healthy?

Subway uses genetically modified vegetables and meat.
They grow large sheets of chicken meat over plates of agar in large mass production labs, and in doing so, they also factor in a low lipid growth.
This causes the meats to have 'low fat content' but unfortunately the fact that everything they use is genetically modified greatly outweighs the low fat content of their 'food'.

I don't eat fast food, because i know how it's made, i know how it's prepared, and i'm canadian, so i have a good outside view of the results (Americans).

I couldn't have said it better myself, buzzybritches. I do agree that the food pyramid is a little outdated, but people do need to remember that it's a recommendation only, not a strict law. What your lifestyle is like is much more important on factoring what you eat. My point here is that if you're actually active, you'll find that you'll be ripping through those 5 servings of carbohydrates (or however many it is) and wanting more, but if you sit on your ass all day then you won't need them all.

I worry that the shift to healthier fats will go overboard and people will end up consuming too much fat of an entirely different nature. Remember that even though olive oil is one of the healthier oils, it is still a fat and as such is one of the most energy dense things you can be eating. I would also like to know what the glycemic index value of olive oil is.

Re: Is Subway healthy?

It is, although there are a few stores here called Burger King. The bottoms of the fries packets say copyright burger king wherever the store is.
I figured it was easier to say burger king so as to translate for you foreigners.

Re: Is Subway healthy?

Is Subway healthy?  It depends on what you're eating, but I would agree that it's probably healthier than most fast food chains.

I tend to like to stick to local delis for my food on the go.

I used to think Subway was great, but I stopped eating junk food, and when I tried Subway three weeks later it made me sick. It's amazing what I considered healthy before.

Re: Is Subway healthy?

My mother-in-law had a horrible, horrible experience with Subway--I don't want to ruin anyone's appetite, so I won't tell unless you ask--but I have never been able to eat Subway since. My husband and I rarely eat fast food, although we were pretty bad the first week of this year's Stanley Cup playoffs, when the Avs were still in it.  big_smile

The basic underlying theorem you're working with is flawed.  Genetically modified foodstuffs aren't necessarily bad.

I don't believe you.  You're telling me that Subway, of all places, is growing chicken meat in a test tube?   Ya wanna back that up?

Dude! Is your brain addled from SARS?! Good lord I used to work at Subway and they DID NOT use chicken meat grown in a lab. That's not to say they had premium chicken, but the chicken was hatched from an egg and lived (and died) as other mass produced chickens in this country. As far as genetically engineered produce, well that could very well be, but all commercial vegetables have been engineered in some form other for many years.

No kidding, the Subways here in New Mexico bought their meats from Sysco Foods up until February of this year, and although they bought lots of specialty items (they had their own printed cups and napkins, as well as special bread, for example), my father says that they were quite standard in terms of the foodstuffs that they bought.
