Paying for a server?
ok, I know kev already started a thread, but maybe a newer one would be more attention getting. Id just like to get a pretty good idea on how many people here would be willing to pay for a server.
I think it would really do a lot of good for this group if we had our own place we could go play, instead of always looking for someone to host, or to bum some server off of GR that we cant control, so if youd be willing to pay, just vote in the poll, you dont need to post if you dont want to, and if you do post, please try to keep it on topic.
*note: suggested contribution is 5$/mo, if you have something diffrent in mind, feel free to PM me

Re: Paying for a server?
Well, of course im in. Just not until I get my upgrade and new mobo paid off which should be by next month (hoping for start of june)
. I dont know about paying monthly cause I think i'd be afraid of missing a month by accident. Probably be easier for me to prepay up a couple months in advance.
We can probably work something out by the time a server is chosen.

Re: Paying for a server?
Vote Yea.
I'd rather pay 6-month or even a full year in advance too. I know how bad my regular bill paying habits are, it's just easier to shell out a lump sum at once than remember to do little payments.
Anybody done research on what servers cost yet? If not I'll look around and see who's got good prices for public servers.

Re: Paying for a server?
Public servers go for $60-100+ sometimes. Depends on the number of ppl you want on a server at one time. For the cost, i'd recommend going with a private server cause generally you can get more ppl on at less price $30-50+. Unless you want to get ppl from all over the net on the server. But ya gotta be careful, the more outsiders you attract the more potential problems can arise.
Only problems with going private server is, some places might watch bandwiths. Meaning if too many ppl get on it too often they could remove your account cause the server would be then classified as a public server. Then you also could not broadcast the IP and password to the public. Unless the group that owns the server allows it.
MA2 was at one time a full public server. It became a mess real fast too. So PH and the others put the server on semi public. Meaning the IP is not broadcast to everyone.
Now if we went public we could advertise the IP on GR. Meaning, someone just idle's in there with a JKII server room for awhile. Cept the room would be locked and in the topic you just put the IP. That way ppl there could just input the IP of our server to connect to it.

Re: Paying for a server?
OK, with the amount of people willing to come foward and pay, we could get an 8 person server, but weve had about twice that many people sign up, for being in the division. If a couple people more wanted to chip in, we could go for the 12 person server, assuming we go with the server place I just looked at. Now, 8 people is a lot more people then we have ever gotten together at one time before, but I think that once we have our own server, we will be able to play together a lot more, so Ill look into it more the next couple days, and make sure Ive seen as many of the plausable options as possible, and we can go from there, but it would be really cool to have a server soon

Re: Paying for a server?
Interestingly, I was doing a search this weekend for game hosting companies and came across one that offers a package called "Dusk til Dawn" rental. Aside from sharing the name of one of the coolest films ever, they basically offer an add'l 40% off the base rate by only making the clan's server available between 6 pm and 6 am during the week. It stays accesible all weekend, I'd assume from 6pm Friday unitl 6 am Monday.
I bookmarked it at home, I'll post the site tonight and you can see what they have to offer. Seemed reputable to me at the time.

Re: Paying for a server?
PreyGrounds was one of the ones I found. Doesn't look too bad for prices. They have servers in TX, CA and Kansas so pings should be decent. They have 6 JKII servers and bunch of RTCW servers, hafta check out some of them and see what the other clans have to say about service, uptime, etc.

Re: Paying for a server?
One more to consider, Euclid Systems. They come highly recommended from some RTCW guys I play with regularly. Prices aren't too bad either.
I thought I'd seen a new server company starting up a few weeks ago that going to handle only JKII. Hafta go looking through my forum bookmarks and see if I can find 'em.

Re: Paying for a server?
Yeah that Euclid Systems does have some nice prices. 12 person public for only $40...not bad and its in a central location. But I wouldnt go berzerk till we all tried a server being hosted by them to see how well it runs.

Re: Paying for a server?
Yeah, I play on the other teams' RTCW server all the time & it's pretty solid. Not sure where it's based out of but they increase the slots to 22 players every Wed for a cusstom map game and it handles the load just fine. I'm sure there are different needs for different games though.
Found the other one I was thinking about, called JediServers.com. Come on, with a home page like that they gotta be good guys!

. "I shall do what I must, Obi Wan"
That place sure does have nice prices. But how are their servers really?

Re: Paying for a server?
Ok, the prices for the jediservers.com seem better, but id trust euclid more. and it looks it holds 10 gb or something, so thats cool. ive looked around on that page, and it seems trustworthy, and although more expensive then the jediservers, its still more affordable then usual, but it looks more appealing to me for various reasons, and so if its ok with you guys, i say we go for it.

Re: Paying for a server?
Sounds like a plan to me! Post payment info when needed (Paypal, checks, my offshore account routing number, whatever).
How are we deciding things like number of slots, public or private, who gets rcon control, etc. You know, all the things we love to deal with when starting up a new server!
Oh, and Chewie, please PM me before you arrange the thing if it's Euclid 'kay? Just another idea rattling around in my skull.
p.s. Maybe inquire how long they'll support JKII also, with Jedi Academy's impending release in Q3.

So it looks like over the next few days, we will be upgrading to DUEL Intel Xeon 2.0 GHz processors. That's right, we're skipping ahead two full generations in processor technology and upping each box to 4.0 GHz of processing power!
And, to anticipate the skeptics:
No, prices will not be affected.
I'm compiling a list of their current customers, and will conduct an informal poll of their service, support, uptimes, etc this week hopefully. What can I say, I always root for the underdog!

number of slots will be determined on how many people are willing to pay. its looking like 12 now, and for a group our size, that should be fine. i was thinking public might be better for recruting/publicity reasons, but we will vote on that in another thread once weve decided that we want to go with euclid
. as far as who gets rcon control, that is still to be decided, but trust me, it wont be a wookiee dictatorship
. some other groups(not necessarily in our clan) have had issues with giving it to everyone who pays, where too many people have the power and it ends up getting somewhat abused, or with just one or two people, and no one can find anyone to get anything changed, so well see what is the best for the group. well have a thread later that decides everything.
p.s. Maybe inquire how long they'll support JKII also, with Jedi Academy's impending release in Q3.
email sent, ill tell you guys what i hear.

Re: Paying for a server?
Well if Jediservers are going to a Xeon that would be good. Least thats a major step up. Its not a Power4 but its bout as close you could get. I think I would support Jediservers more now if they do move to Xeon.
