"must have" software and accessories for iBook?

Just ordered a 12" 800Mhz iBook.  I'm curious to know what everyone thinks are the must have items for the iBook:  software, accessories, etc.  What do you have that you can't live without?  From what I've gathered, Toast is one item that I should definitely get.  Any other stuff?

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

I'd say a welcome addition would be a nice portable mouse. I just picked up a Kensington PocketMouse Pro with retractable USB cord. I'm enjoying using the MacOS X (I'm a new PC convert) much more with an actual mouse rather than the trackpad.

That's the only extra I've purchased so far. I'll have to keep an eye on this thread myself. Good post!

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

The accessories that I have for my May 2001 Dual USB iBook are:

1. PocketMouse Pro w/retractable USB cable
2. 250MB USB-powered Zip Drive
3. Belkin retractable Ethernet Cable
4. Kensington USB notebook light
(replaced last night by Targus' ultra-cool laptop light that can be
adjusted far more than the Kensington)
5. Apple A/V cable for iBook
(replaced by the VGA--->RCA/S-VIDEO adapter on newer models)
6. Screen cleaning cloth (this is a MUST for any laptop owner)
7. Samsonite slimline laptop case (around $60 @ CompUSA)
8. Original 5GB iPod
9. DiamondMako PDA (I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to
make this work with the iBook-it was a steal on uBid for $99)
10. Couple of Sony 700MB CD-R's thrown in my bag at all times

That's about it--these accessories aren't used all the time, but come in handy when needed.

Hope this helps,

JCV

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

I don't even own an iBook (or any Apple laptop for that matter. But I desire one greatly! Really, I do!)

But I gotta say, I thought the Kensington notebook light was pretty cool when I saw it.

And definitely get a really nice backpack or other sort of carrying case for it. The iBook must travel in style wink

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

I've got a cheapoid USB light. It's not Kensington, but it's great (clips to the top of the screen and points down).

A USB hub -- a definite necessity, as I've got a printer, scanner, mouse, cardreader for my digital camera, a Visor ... well, you get the idea. If you do get a hub, try to get a powered one (reportedly the unpowered ones tend to cause crashes, but I don't know if it's true). The powered ones can be used unpowered, if you want to.

A nice set of speakers and/or headphones -- rock out with iTunes!

A DV Camcorder!

A digital camera!

AirPort -- I don't have it, but I've always wanted to get it. You can also get a non-Apple base station for much less (but make sure it's compatible).

A FireWire hard drive -- good for cramming with your iTunes, iPhoto and iMovie files. The slim ones are bus powered, so you don't need a separate power supply (though they'll suck up your battery power more quickly).

And a groovy carrying case. I have a "professional" style computer case for when I want to look like a grownup, and a lighter, slimmer one for just bummin' around. I think most any case will do, as long as you're careful and don't let the iBook slide around at all. They are pretty durned tough, I've discovered.

So them's all my accessories. Suffice to say when it's on my desk it's plugged into have the city, like some sort of Frankenstein monster. But untethered, it's a thing of beauty.

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

Most of my extras are here on my desk all the time and serve to turn my iBook into quite powerful workstation when not on the road.
I have:

- Logitech 2.1 speaker system. Good speakers are a must have. Those on iBook are only good for system beeps and nothing more.

- Some nice headphones. iBooks speakers realy suck smile so you need headphones to listen to mp3s on the road. Besides, i watch movies in bed, and i dont want to wake everyone else in the house.

- 80gb firewire hdd. For mp3/movies storage and backups. And good for games. I have almost all games installed on that disk. I dont play them on the road much and with 7200rpm it is much faster than iBooks hdd.

- Wireless mouse. I have logitech wireless with ball. Its ok, but it has reciver on the cable and its not so practical. Ive seen mice that have very small reciver and you plug the reciver into usb.

- 17" crt monitor. If you are going to use iBook for some webdesign or stuff like that external monitor is great. You can enable spanning and you get 2 desktops.

Fow now i still have cable network, but i see that airport must be sooooo sweet. That would probably be my next purchase.

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

I don't like that mouse that retracts inside the mouse. when I use it, it still curls up and gets in the way.

If you travel a lot, it's nice, though.

1. Wireless internet capability
2. Stylish bag (mine is a cool graphite&black color bag made by Sumdex)
3. Headphones or speakers or both
4. USB Flylight (comes in handy when you need it)
5. Firewire patch cable (3 foot has been fine for me)

from www.versiontracker.com:

BBedit. OR BBedit light (this second is free). that does everything and much more than notepad does for windows..  big_smile

that's the number 1 !!! then i could do a list of otehr kewl things.. but maybe better just surf there around and look something you like!!! i'd choose also chimera .. and imageindexer (a really small app that makes pix of the size you want for folders etc, saves a lot of work..)

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

i've recently bought an ibook and also pondered on what to purchase!
i'm going to be using mine away from home almost exclusively.
This is what i've bought so far.
Laptop bag, with plenty of pockets, and a built-in extra case to store my ibook which detaches from the main case, very pleased with that.
Power lead to plug it in on aircraft. My battery isnt going to last a 9hr flight!
av cable to plug it into the tv in hotels etc
mouse! because it's easier than a trackpad to use.
headphones, because the built-in speakers are no cop for dvd's, music etc.
i got a cd-rw disk as well
all these i carry in my laptop bag.

just got me first ibook!
500mhz, combo drive, 384mb, OS X 10.2.3

Re: "must have" software and accessories for iBook?

yea, all i would really reccomend is a l337 carrying case, a usb hub, and a cd case....
you dont really need a lot...
but, for software,
graphics converter, USB monitor...it tells you when you plug stuff in..just a flash of the name of the device, just like when you raise/lower volume/brighness...very cool...
and...comictastic, a freee app from apple, fetches all your cartoons..igetter a great app for downloading, and yea, some games....bable box is a nice quality lame relaxing game if you ever get tired of UT and stuff...

I want:

- FireWire external hdd

If you want to type in a dark situation, like on planes, or in bed while your significant other is sawing logs beside you, a USB light comes in really handy. If it's dark and you look from the screen to the keyboard, you won't be able to see the keys too well; the light fixes that.

And FireWire drives are fantastic. However, you have to be sure to back 'em up, because when mine died a few months ago I lost thousands of mp3s and some of my work. Still, it's definitely worthwhile if you have a lot of music, do a lot of video, or just have a too-small hard drive (hello? a measly 10 gigs on my iBook?).

Dude, Before droping the bux on a new FW HD, checkout http://www.powerbook1.com and think about getting a new larger hd, then put the old one in a portable case. the cost should be close, and you get the plus of not having to carry around one more piece of hardware.

7. A comfortable chair or sofa for those endurance web surfing sessions

Try it in a papasan, those dish-like chairs you find at Pier 1 - they're really comfortable, and perhaps for using your laptop.

My cousin has one of those, and a hammock. I look forward to using both.

I haven't had the chance to accesorise my ibook much, though I have a very nice backpack for it.
Planned purchases include:
A/V cable
USB remote control
512MB stick of RAM
Diablo II
Carmageddon II
USB flylight
Decent mouse

Music, and for DVDs.
Plus if I ever get organised enough to do a presentation with a projector, I'll look really cool.
