sorry about bashing xbox

I know it has been awhile since I posted here, but I really have had nothing to say until now.

Earlier on, when the X Box first came out, I bashed it to pieces, praising my PS2 and my Game Cube to be the best. I think that now I may be a little off. I am not saying the X Box is the best, or the worst, but what I am saying is perhaps the X Box is not as bad as I originally thought.

At the launch of the X Box, I was totally displeased with it since it crashed playing Project Gotham at Target the day it was released. Looking back on it all people could say the same for the PS2 and maybe even the Dreamcast. That now (to me) is a forgiveable error.

Now that it is about 13 months later, I am beginning to like the X Box more and more. It does offer some great games, most of which are newer versions of the games I have grown to love on Dreamcast. Such as Jet Set Radio Future (Jet Grind (or "Set" depending on what version you have) Radio) Sega GT 2002 (Sega GT) and Crazy Taxi 3 High Roller (Crazy Taxi 1 and 2). The X Box also features many other games such as Apex (another killer racing game) and Phantom Crash (a mech game). A lot of the new games coming out for X Box are X Box exclusive. To me they look great, and appear to be solid titles.

I also thought that the graphics of the X Box were equal to the PS2 when the X Box was first released. And they probably were, But now it appears that the PS2 keeps getting worse looking games than X Box, with new games constantly being ramped up for the X Box. With each new slew of games, the PS2 games keep looking more and more dated, almost as much as my Dreamcast does to my Game Cube.

All in all, I am beginning to like the X Box. It is getting all of the Racing/quirky games I am into (I could care less about sport/shooting/rpg games) I am seriously thinking of getting one down the road. Microsoft may make the console and produce half of the games, but the games it has are some pretty damn good games. There are only a few things holding me back

1. Size: I hate the size of the X Box, I have enough HiFi equipment in my room, this is like another receiver for me (I have the Sony STR-GX 808 ES and it is HUUUUUUUGE)
2. Controller: I do have some big hands ( too big for my body, i look like a cartoon) but for some reason the X Box controller and controller Type S are either too big or too uncomfortable for me. I just don't like the way they sit in my hand. I am more akin to the Game Cube controller and the PS2 controller (even the Dreamcast controller that all my friends hate)
3. Maker: I hate Microsoft, and if I were ever to buy an X Box I would have to get one used to ensure that Microsoft does not get any of my money.

That's about all of my gripes. I just love the new games that are coming out for X Box. There are just so many that are X Box exclusive, titles that i hoped would land on my Game Cube or PS2. I am finding it harder to stay loyal to my Nintendo/Sony/Sega upbringing. With all of the titles out now for the PS2 and Game Cube, X Box still is calling me, taunting me with great new racing games that my PS2 sorely is lacking this season (the only one out worth me getting now is Pro Race Driver) and my Game Cube just doesn't have. But if I still had to choose the number one Console, it still would be the Game Cube (Metroid Prime can't be beat)

So this leads me to my question. Has anybody else here felt the same way? Has anybody gone from hating the X Box to sorta digging it?

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

Well, kinda. I was researching all 3 consoles trying to decide which one to buy and I went from, "No way am I getting an Xbox" to "I guess I am getting an Xbox". A year later I can say I am happy with my decision. The games I have are:

Dead or Alive 3 (great with friends)
Deathrow (brutal fun)
Gunvalkyrie (fun platformer/shooter, despite your thumbs)
Halo (amazing)
Hitman 2 (very cool)
Jet Set Radio Future (platforming multiplied by 'cool' to the 'rad' power)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance (weird but enjoyable)
Moto GP (amazing, online and off)
Phantom Crash (awesome, can't wait for the Live add-on disc)
Project Gotham Racing (fun and challenging)
Sega GT 2002 (great RPG racer)
Splinter Cell (challenging and thought inducing)
SSX Tricky (good ol' crazy fun)
TimeSplitters 2 (goofy random, fairly mindless fun)
Unreal Championship (quite amazing online, never gets old)
and Xbox Live (well worth the $50 for 1 year, demo games, and the headset)

I am really looking foward to:

Ninja Gaiden (OMG)
Halo 2 (OMG)
Fable (OMG)
Doom III (OMG the graphics!)
Psychonaughts (looks weird and cool)
Panzer Dragoon Orta amazing atmosphere)
True Fantasy Live Online (looks neat)
Project Gotham Racing 2 (online PGR baby! POWERSLIDE)
Brute Force (looks really cool)
Crimson Skies (looks fun as a barrel of monkeys)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (sweet PC games? bring 'em on!)
Enter the Matrix (The Matrix is my favorite movie)
Tao Feng: Fist of the Lotus (amazing looking despite the character designs)
and more in 2003

I have big hands, also bigger than they should be for my body and I love the Xbox controller. It is the first controller that I didn't get handcramps with. LAN, HD, downloads, Live: all make it a great experience. I reccomend.

So long,
Larg0

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

I got one for "XMas" this year. Although I didn't ask for it, I can't complain as I haven't owned a console since SNES. The graphics are great and the biggest thing that gets me jonesed about it is....TADA....

SPORTS GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all know the Mac landscape when it comes to sports games.

....well... it WILL be nice to finally play HALO as well!

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

Ehh. I have an xbox and a game cube. I can't say that I like the xbox that much. Theres only a few platform specific games that I have had fun playing (halo, rally sport, etc).

The vast majority of titles that I found entertaining on the xbox were also cross platform (aka also available on the GC or PS2). I saw no need to keep the darn thing. I figure I'll play Halo 2 on my buddy's xbox, and Doom 3 will look much better on one of my computers anyway.

All in all, nintendo's platform titles seem to be entertaining me a lot more then sony's or microsoft's.

I agree. Nintendo has a monopoly on a level of innovation and style the other's (Sony and MS) simply can't comprehend. While most XBox and PS2 games are just rehashings of the standard sports/racing/FPS/third-person platformer with wacky cartoon character/street fighting games, Nintendo has some incredibly innovative gems. From Luigi's Mansion to Animal Crossing, Pikmin, and even Metroid Prime (the most original twist on the FPS I've seen in years), and the upcoming Legend of Zelda for Gamecube, Nintendo has it made when it comes to innovation, style, and sheer fun factor.

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

How can you say Xbox doesn't have the innovation and Nintendo does? I didn't get a Gamecube for a few reasons, one being alot of their good games were just updates of older ones. Metroid Prime was the only thing that really peaked my interests but it's controls are beyond wack. I know it is suppose to be a great game but I don't think it is worth buying another system just for one game with totally unorthadox controls.

So long,

ps. Xbox has ALOT of different and innovative games, you just have to look into the many excellent titles. You will find things if you do.

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

i have all three, and im a fan of the box. the PS2 is great, and its almost my fave, its just starting to lose its edge, as there are so many great xbox games coming out. the xbox is just insane, there are so many great games out all the time. and xbox live is a gift from god. im not a fan of the gamecube, there literally arent any amazing games on it. and when a good one comes out, i have to wait forever for another release. it seems that the bube gets more credit than it deserves. metroid is fun, but it controls poorly, and there is no story (im at 65 percent)

Amen. Especially to Metroid being the most original FPS in a long time.

Some of the best titles (IMO) are cross platform anyway (mortal kombat, jedi outcast, anything 2K3, bounty hunter, etc...), but Nintendo by far has the best exclusives in Metroid, Super Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, etc... It seems like these games never get old...they just get better and evolve into greater classics.

I enjoy puzzles and mind games more than shooting people.

Eh, speak for yourself...I'm at 100% and can't wait to win it in hard mode. Plus now that I've almost beat metroid fusion, I'll soon have the original NES metroid unlocked within prime!

The controls are great....like I said before, you just need to get better with them. tongue

F-Zero? Since when was that a great game? smile I wish they didn't make things worse in some cases. The new Zelda looks stupid. Metroid Prime could have controlled normally but didn't. Metroid Fusion is great but it leads you around a bit too much. It is like they gave Metroid Prime no story and Fusion too much. If they divided the story allotment up between the two it would have been perfect! Anyway, I just don't like the new Zelda asthetic and have been playing Nintendo since I was 5 so I want something new and different. I am finding this on my Xbox. Honestly I think Xbox has the best exclusives AND it always gets the best version of multiplatform titles...

F-Zero? Since when was that a great game?

Since it was released.

I wish they didn't make things worse in some cases. The new Zelda looks stupid.

That's what everyone says until they play it. Have you played it yet?

Metroid Prime could have controlled normally but didn't.

Normally? So what? If it was going to be the same as any other FPS, why even bother making it?

It is like they gave Metroid Prime no story

Yeah they did...you learn more as you scan the things around you. The delivery of the story is much more intelligent than stupid cinematics and cut scenes that lead into another level.

It seems most "31337 GaM3rZ" out there are having a hard time learning a new control scheme, and not having the plot spoon-fed to them thru cut scenes.

Anyway, I just don't like the new Zelda asthetic and have been playing Nintendo since I was 5 so I want something new and different.

I think you should play it before you pass judgement.

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that the X-Box, the PlayStation-2 and the GameCube are all equally good.

They've all got very nice graphics (not talking polygons per second here, just the results). They've all got great sound. Some can play DVDs. Some have online options. Some are compatible with older machines.

In a perfect world, I'd not only buy each one, but I'd have the time to play on them. In the real world, I again inexplicably failed to win the lottery (how? [n]how?[/b]) so my job, my girlfriend and my hobbies keep me too occupied for playing games. I've bumped back my sleep to six hours per night, and I still don't have enough time!

I think they're all equally good, and the selection of games proves that there's no clear winner that will suit everyone.

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

I think that the Xbox and GC are about equal in final value, each having strengths.

The PS2..well..I just hate it, the controls, the games (How can anyone say that GTA3 is THE best or even ONE of the best games ever? Oh ya..cause there are hookers and you can shoot police, dont gimme open ended either..Id rather play Exile) and the fact that the rushed it out to get a lead (damn,it worked) and now its outdated (only gonna get worse..omg I use () to much )

I ended up getting a GC for several reasons:

The Xbox seems to play more like a computer, not bad,but I already have a computer

The Controller, absolute shiznitz unless you got larger than average hands...even then...the button layout is smurf.

Customer Loyalty and Brand Name, I have owned every Nintendo system excluding the Virtual Boy (NES,SNES,N64 now GC, GB and GBA) and have loved all of them.

Microsoft, blech...I cant stand em,and not because they are a massive monopoly, because Billy runs em and they do everything half-assed and make billions off it.

I am very happy with my GC,especialy the Nintendo 1st and 2nd party games. Mario Sunshine wasnt really innovative..but its still the best 3d platformer IMHO. Super Smash Brothers is a very unique fighting game that is suitable for all ages and skill levels. Animal Crossing has taken all those hours I used to sit bored watching TV and turned em into fun.

Metroid Prime...how can you say no story? Obviously you dont understand the game. Metroid is about being alone on a dangerous alien planet, exploring by yourself and making your own idea of the story and what has happened. Having someone talk to you or information bleeped to you would be so incredibly lame for Metroid. I love the creepy feeling of scanning the screen displays and unfolding the story bit by bit and realizing what is happening. As for controls, its not a FPS, so why do you want FPS controls? I havent read anything about the game because I want it all to be a surprise to me,and Im loving it. Got it for Xmas and so far am 26% through ( Gimme a break,as good as Metroid is..my new G4 still sucks up most my time wink

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

I would get an Xbox if it had keyboard and mouse support. I like FPS games, but don't want to buy new Macs constantly just to play the newest games, and the Xbox has some good FPS games available, namely Halo. BUT!!! it doesn't have keyboard/mouse support, which is just lame. My DC has that support and playing UT, QIII, and SofF on it is great with a 17" VGA. If the Xbox had this, I would definitely buy it, M$ in their infinite lack-of-wisdom decided that would make it appear too much like "a computer". Of course a console video game system *is* a computer! Why not leave all options available? Pretty damn lame, IMO. I know the PS2 can use a keyboard/mouse combo, so when it gets down in price I may break down and get one. Hopefully M$ sees the value in the keyboard/mouse combo by then.

I never really liked the xbox, but i never hated it either. Im no big fan of MS but I like Halo. I have to say the controller is perfect for halo and most shooters id imagine. PS2 controller = major sucky for shooters. I have never even used a GCN, so I cant comment on those. I would never buy an Xbox, though for a while a really wanted one for Halo...Halo and Splinter cell looks cool, but who knows..

overall i still prefer my PS2 to the Xbox or Gamecube

Re: sorry about bashing xbox

After doing some research, I'd have to say that the DC is still ahead of the other consoles in one area-true VGA support. I use a monitor and get true 640x480 resolution with the DC, but the only options for PS2 and Xbox are hacks that imitate a true VGA. Why didn't these later consoles include this awesome feature? The DC is still ahead of it's time in a few areas. Of course the Xbox and PS2 have better graphics overall, but there is no way to fully enjoy the possibilities if you don't have a HDTV.

I think that money is the primary concern for most people in business, and I cannot believe that video games are anything special in that regard.

And you are obviously right. Although, it is possible to consider the medium as an art form. You can make money, and put your heart into it.

Why is the company that makes windows trying to compete in the console arena? They spent 2.2 billion on the whole "xbox live" thing and have only made back 9 million...not to mention they lose $100+ on each console sold.

Would you build a $2000 computer and sell it for $9? If so, what's your motive...or better yet, what's your goal?

If money is the primary concern...why would someone knowingly set themselves up to lose money for the next decade?

The plan is another monopoly. Plain and simple.

If anyone wants to claim m$ is in the console market for the sake of making gaming better, then prove to me their heart is in building the greatest OS ever.

"Amen. Especially to Metroid being the most original FPS in a long time. "

lol.

there are many more influential and far more revolutionary FPS to hit the scene in the last few months. the simple fact of the matter is this (and now im almost done with the game and fusion) the control scheme lacks control, and i tihnk that they made it that way so that kids wouldnt be conused. button layout is hardly intuitive. the story is lacking. the action and everything else is pretty fun. its just not that special its a good game, but its not revolutionary, or amazing by any means.

and MS, at least right now, is the most consumer consciencious. nintendo, for example cares more about profits than its customers. since the nes days, nintendo would bnever release multiple games at the same time, so as not to have them compoete with each other sales wise. that is why there is such a slow release of games.

mac fanboyism yielded by a gamecube control is a sick thing. MS is pretty bad. but for now, they are the best in trying to provide for their consumers. and windows is pretty bad compared to jag, but it does have many legs up in certain depts. its faster, and...well its faster and thast about it. and i run jag on a dual 867, and its way slower than my 2000+.

yawn....

Yeah, I know what you think about metroid already...and just the fact that you're almost at the end and still can't figure out the controls (you'd think after 20 hrs of gameplay, someone could figure it out), I've narrowed this problem down to incompetency on your part.

...nintendo, for example cares more about profits than its customers. since the nes days, nintendo would bnever release multiple games at the same time, so as not to have them compoete with each other sales wise. that is why there is such a slow release of games.

How many games need to be released a month for you to be happy, and would you even buy them all? And like I said before, at least 4-6 games come out every month for the cube...so why do you have some grudge against nintendo for not being the developer behind every game released? Or are you just mad that Mario 128, Metroid Prime, Zelda: Wind Waker, etc... weren't all released on the same day...

It's smart on N's part to give a month or two between release dates of their big titles. Maybe you have $150-$200 to drop on a few games in one day, but most people only buy 1 game a month or so. Most people buying games are parents....with a gazillion other bills....

Besides, now that I've beaten MP, I went out and picked up Star Wars: Bounty Hunter (Great Game!!!) and Jedi Outcast, so that should hold me over until the zelda pre-release, when I get a FREE copy of Ocarina of time...which will hold me over until march when I'll get splinter cell, zelda, and RTX Red Rock....and on and on....

MS is pretty bad. but for now, they are the best in trying to provide for their consumers.

providing for their...BWAhaha...custo...aaAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Yeah, they LOVE their customers....

Did you read how xbox live allows them to scan the machines for altered hardware (which will void your xbox live subscription...no refund), and apply software patches without the customer even knowing? Why do they need to apply patches? Oh...wait...HAHA...because it's MICROSOFT.

<sarcasm>You know what I hate about microsoft...they don't make any games</sarcasm> (or do they...correct me if I'm wrong here)...so then, how many games a month does MS release? (not counting publishing...I mean developing AND publishing)

Huh...Does Nintendo have them beat?!
