Upgraded to XP and now won't shut down just restarts
Help. I upgraded my girlfriend's parent's computer to XP Home on their Dell running a 733 PIII (I think). Now, when anyone goes to shut down the computer, it starts to shut down but then restarts. I thought I heard something about XP restarting automatically is there is a problem, but I don't know where that setting is. I really could use some help because I was the one who upgraded their computer.

If the restart is being caused by a system failure you can stop XP from automatically rebooting by doing the following ...
Right click "My Computer" on your desktop or go into control panel and look for the icon that says "System"
If you right clicked my computer then hit "Properties"
Click on the tab that says "Advanced"
Click the button that says "Settings" in the box that says "Startup and Recovery"
You'll see a checkbox in the next dialog box that says "Auotmatically Restart" in the "System Failure" box. Uncheck that box.
Try to shutdown again and see if you get a kernel crash etc.
Good luck.

jax,
I turned off that setting and immediately got the BSOD. Something about "IRQL_not_less_than_or_equal" or something close to that. WTF? Does anyone know what this means? Please help.

The last time I got that error it had something to do with my video...
Try looking in the BIOS for a setting... should be in "integrated pheriphials" or "advanced" settings... something like "Assign IRQ for VGA"
Make sure that says yes. Then also check in power management and make see if you see something like "PM controlled by OS" ... make sure that is yes.
Man. Its been so long since I had that BSOD. It was on Win2000 that I got it.
What OS did you upgrade from?

Like someone else said, seriously check and see if you need a BIOS upgrade cause you prob had Win98 on the system originally and XP is a totally different breed of cat.

I have a new BIOS downloaded, but haven't installed it. I will look at the other things that you suggested. I upgraded their computer from 98 SE. Also I haven't upgraded to SR1, because I have heard some negative comments. Regardless, thanks a lot.

Re: Upgraded to XP and now won't shut down just restarts
there is no problem with sp1 as far as I can tell! except if you use a pirate copy of xp pro, it won't let you upgrade!
if after the bios upgrade and you still can not get it to work, stick that xp disc in again and do a reinstall, but try the repair option and see if it will fix your problem! it should!

I upgraded the BIOS and am still having the problem. I will try that. Thanks, pcguy. BTW, it is a legitimate copy of XP Home directly from Microsoft.

If you have any software by Roxio installed (Easy CD creator 5) then get the latest updates from Roxio.
It's not a movie.

I finally got around to doing that. It worked!!
I can't believe a program was causing the BSOD.
I am so happy to be back on my Mac.
Thanks everyone.

Its almost always a program that causes the error, with any OS. The OS rarely ever, ever screws itself.
