Re: What transmission do you drive?

echoboom Audi is makin a V6 version of the TT next year i think. Car and driver had an article about it so you might want to wait. I think that the new one is a preformance model but that coudl still affect the other models.

here this might intrest some people

Its about how to still have fun with an auto transmission. i wouldn't know if it works considering that I won't be fifteen for another week.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

i drive a manual now, but up untill about a month ago i drove an automatic. I actualy really enjoyed driving the car that was an automatic, a suburban. Even though it was a tunaboat, i still loved that car. mainly because i liked parking off in the bushes and flexing on rocks, which is somethingi cant do now that i drive a honda accord. but what the honda lacks in 4x4 ability it makes up for in speed and the fact its a 5 speed, which is always fun to drive.

Aha! Now I understand why your writing is so rough to read!

No, it's a used TT. I can't afford a new one. Still, a 225HP Quattro isn't too bad big_smile big_smile

Well, sorry. It's not that low - I was merely noticing something that explains that you are not in fact a l33t wannabe.

When I say "I" I refer to everyone in the house. My parents could in theory afford a new one, but it wouldn't be worth the massive saving we'd have to do over the next few years.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I prefer manual. Once you master it you can drive smoother than an automatic (I kid you not), and if you don't have one already, it drives the chicks wild!

Some of you guys know what rev-matching is and some even know what heel-toe is, or can do it, believe me it is so freaking fun to break, downshift a couple gears and revmatch while entering a corner and have the power turned on high when you exit. Beats the crap outta auto. And other people don't really know what it is when they hear it, but they know race cars do it, so you must be good!

If you are looking for a sporty car I recommend a 99-01 Subaru 2.5 RS or Subaru WRX if you are lucky like me. Erase that subaru stigma from your head, these cars are based off of Subarus once dominant rally cars. AWD sure beats up on FWD. And there's a turbo smile

Sorry, this is sorta my only chance to post about cars when I'm not at the car forum, so you get a lot of usless info.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

They can get better gas mileage than automatics, but they don't.  You have to be an expert to be able to be more efficient than the automatic transmission system.  Same with drag racing.  Nobody would drag in a manual, you just aren't as fast as the automatic.

I agree with you in part, and only in terms of modern autos. Older ones, like mine, really suck down the fuel in comparison to a well-driven manual.

That being said, I also think it's silly to have a smug sense of superiority in terms of manuals over autos. Drive intelligently in an auto and you still have a large degree of control, and your chance of running into a situation that only a manual will comfortable extricate you from are minimal.

First comment: I totally agree. No idea whether it drives the chicks wild; right now I'm sort of on par with an automatic tranny.

Wait - you mean just owning a car with a standard does it? Not just being able to drive smoother than an auto? Hmm...

I can rev-match and heel-toe (basically operating the gas and brake at the same time with one foot, to keep the RPMs high [so that the car will maintain its speed or a little lower when you downshift into a lower ratio] while shifting into a lower gear in order to decelerate smoothly while using the engine's back-pressure as a brake [whew!]).
It is undeniably complicated, and undeniably fun. If you do it right, it's better than sex.

And the Impreza WRX is a nice car, but I like the TT better. Granted the WRX has 75 more horsepower, but the TT is smaller and lighter (aluminum monocoque), and it also has a nice turbo. I also dislike the design of the WRX - it's butt-ugly. The TT Quattro (all the 225HP, sans turbo, ones) is AWD.

Agreed. The Insight you see in my avatar can get 20-40 MPG better than the CVT automatic. Essentially 70-90 MPG (and going downhill, 150 or more big_smile )

And to the second comment; there are upsides and downsides to both. I find I am a much worse driver in an automatic simply because it is so simple. My mind tends to wander. I know I am not the only person woth this problem - do you want people driving mechanically down the road while thinking about something else?
Name a situation where a manual will be able to extricate you but an automatic will not. I'm quite interested (I need something else to brag about to my automatic-using friends). The only advantage I can see is the wider torque band so maybe you can pull yourself out of mud/sand/snow more easily.

StyerCDP, what is this j maneuver of which you speak? I might have heard of it under another name.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I find that in fast cars, if they have an automatic, it keeps me from being Mario Andretti, because I'd always be slamming the gas/clutch on a manual "fast" car, going a lot faster than I should.

I had a Trans Am with an automatic for a week, and it was a breeze to drive, barring the 40+foot turning radius.

What?

Do you mean that all the cars you have seen with manuals are "fast" cars (ie. porsche, lambo, bmw, etc.) and therefore you drive faster in them to keep up with the image, or

Do you mean that you simply need to slam on the gas to keep from stalling? Practise makes perfect; at the beginning it's either stall or lurch. But then you get better.

No, it's about resisting temptation. I Just love hearing that "weee, neeee, whiiir" of changing gears, and if I was doing that in a fast car (like a Trans Am), I would most likely be driving like a race car driver because of all the power available to me.

I can drive a stick perfectly well, but when you have a flashy, fast car, I've found that I usually drive them "faster" when they're stick.

I wasn't really thinking of any specifics, I just think that a good driver in a manual has a lot more versatility at hand when any unforseen hazards arise.

a few weeks back I had driven my Aspire about 300 feet into a mud road about 6 or 7 inches deep. it was night time and I was following another car to get to another road. the car in front of me got stuck.  I drive a stick and it got out of that mud pit with no problems. had it had been an auto matic I don't think I would have gotten out.

Are you sure? The TT is a very heavy car for the size. The impreza is 3200 lbs, not a lot, but not light either. The WRX will blow the TT out of the water in almost every performance test... after you stick some new tires one it, the stock ones suck so hard.

The TT is a work of art, and I love audi, but ya just can't beat the imprezas bang for the buck. And the bug eyes grew on me smile One is german touring car, the other a rice rocket, different car for different people.

I've put in about $1500 into my car for performance and it is now a 300 hp beast. I haven't even touched the turbo, if I do that.... look out!

But the TT still gets the chicks I bet. Good thing I already nabbed one, but she thinks my car is "cute" not the "bad ass" that I was hoping. sad

Re: What transmission do you drive?

Manual is more fun, but gets realy annoying in busy traffic.  I drive auto mostly because both my family cars are auto  tongue , and if I feel that I need to accelerate faster or have some fun I just shift with the gear selector -- 1, 2 , D (aka 3) -- and yes...the 1983 BMW 528e does only have 3 gears
(not to mention the amazing 4500 RPM redline tongue).

My car's a three speed auto, too. It's in desperate need of another gear or two, the gaps between the ratios are big enough to drive through.

I love manual, but I wanted a 300ZX (series one, 1986) and all I could find was an auto - 3 speed plus overdrive.
