Trouble with them pesky DVDs

I was hoping someone might have an answer to a ponderance.  Last September I bought my 700 mHz iBook with combo drive.  Since then, I've been buying some DVDs and finding that the book often has trouble playing them.  At some point during the movie, then screen will just stop and I'll hear the drive trying to read the disc.  Sometimes it will start playing again, sometimes I'll get a "fatal error" message.  (Hate those fatal errors).  I've checked the discs and they usually seem pretty good.  No big scratches or anything, sometimes tiny little marks but nothing that I would assume would cause the disk to not play.  Is this the fault of my drive, perhaps something that I can get fixed while it's still under warrentee?  Or do you suspect it's the fault of the disk.  It just seems like I've got a very sensitive computer.  Anyone else have these problems?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks all.

David

Re: Trouble with them pesky DVDs

Has it always had problems playing dvd's or did it start sometime later?

Are you using OS X or OS 9?

I also have a 700/combo iBook.  It hasn't had any troubles with dvd's like you have been experiencing.

You may have a defective drive.  I have seen this before with the toshiba combo drives.  How is burning CD's?  Any problems there?

Re: Trouble with them pesky DVDs

I've been using both OS 9 and X and the same problems seem to happen.  Sometimes it will stop at a certain point in a disc, then I'll come back to it later and there will be no problem at that point and it will play fine.  I've had no trouble burning CDs though.  I could take it in and get it checked out but it would be a lot of trouble, hence I'm trying to get advice beforehand.

I've had that problem before but I can usually narrow it down to a bad part on the disc. I have two combo drives, one LG, one Sony. The problem usually occurs with DVD rentals, never had a problem with DVDs I've bought.

Sounds like you have a different issue than mine if you can get it to play fine a second time.

Re: Trouble with them pesky DVDs

sad I'm a new convert and I have a 500mhz iBook w/the combo drive that was new in October and have horrible DVD/blank media problems.  I just got it back from Apple today and it has EXACTLY the same problem it did when it was sent in.  It won't find blank disks and won't mount DVD's.  It will spit them out after a few spins.  CD Roms and audio disks are fine.  They provided a detailed "Proof of Repair" but it mentions a Cable Assembly for the HDD/DVD and a DC-In reworking.  I've got an email into a tech I worked with on the first pick up.  The Apple forum is full of this problem and it is usually a faulty drive.  I have no idea why they don't issue a recall.  I never thought I'd long for Bill Gates....
