Re: Servers?
Jediservers said they were switching to Xeon servers so unless Elucid has better, id say go with the place that has servers w/ CPUs made for serving.
The dedicated option at Elucid shows a 1.7Ghz P4. Now that is just for dedicated but if the standard servers are on similar boxes. Might be ok but then...its just a P4. Dual G4s at half speed can pretty much whoop those
.
If Jedi servers was still gonna be on Celeron boxes id be very heavily leaning towards Elucid but with them updating to Xeon, tougher choice.

Re: Servers?
I don't like the $15/mod fee that Elucid is asking. Jediservers seems to have the "home-game" advantage, and if they're upgrading soon to Xeon servers, I'm leaning toward them.

Re: Servers?
I've also started conducting an informal poll of clans already using the jediservers.com people, and they all have only good things to say. since we're paying a monthly fee anyway, does it stand to reason if we're unhappy at any point, we can simply change companies? (Well, with the additional hassle of re-loading any mods, skins, maps, etc.)
It may take JS a few more days to setup since it sounds like they've been overwhelmed with response, but it's not like we're all on 24/7 right now anyway.

Re: Servers?
Whichever one we decide on, feel free to get in touch w/me via email. I'll be glad to take contributions via my PayPal account and pay for the server (I have to collect the funds first, since the VISA card function of my PayPal card will only work with a balance in the account.
So, if we're ready to make this happen, we just need to decide on a per-person $$ amount, and collect & pay.
Let me know what you guys/gals think.

Re: Servers?
I've had a really busy week, and haven't had time to research the best choice. When are we gonna close the voting? I'm all for doing this quickly, but only two people have voted so far... . On the other hand, I'm not really sure it matters which one we go with, though like I said, I haven't looked into it. I mean, the only way we're really going to know how one group is, is by trying them,
So, anyway, how long do we have to decide?

Re: Servers?
The JediServers home page says that they've upgraded to the Dual Xeons, but I've posted a request for confirmation on their boards as well. Will report back as I hear.

Re: Servers?
Well, I spent some time strolling around both sites, and I voted for JediServers.
Factors that entered my decision-making were: Xeon servers (web page says so, not "confirmed", but it's good enough to try it, I think), the fact that they only do JKII, and their prices, lack of setup fee (though Euclid did say they could waive it). I say we at least try it. It's too bad they don't have space for a web site, but then again we do have this forum. And they don't have as much FTP space, but maybe we won't need as much. We can concentrate on skins, maybe, and a few mods people must have. I'm not a big mod guy, so that's not as important to me. Skins, though, we gots to have enough skins, yo.
Seems worth a shot, and, as was mentioned, if we don't like it, we can shop around more.
As for paying, my new job starts on 1 Sept, so until then, it'll be a little hard to contribute. Well, maybe, anyway, I guess a lot depends on how much we're looking at for each person.

Re: Servers?
Im in for Jediservers too with my vote.
Ya know, if we could swing it. A 16 person would be nice. Its only $5 more than a 12 person. But if not then lets try for the 12 person server. 12 person would still be 6 on 6. Thats really all that would be needed for the moment.

Re: Servers?
I think we'd have trouble justifying a 16 person server. Eight's too small (if we get lucky and people show up), and I think 12's a good middle ground. I hope we get lot's of peeps to play, but I think we've got only about 8 or so guys posting regularly, or going on GameRanger, or hanging out on #ma-j2 waiting for games. That still leaves us some leeway for others to join, and the happy wanderers who'll show up, and for those we might know who we will want to invite.
Looks like this will soon be a fully operation battle station.
Any ideas on admins, maps, etc, etc from anyone? This is all a bit new to me, so I don't know where to start. Like, what kind of games will we support, and who gets to change them? I like FFA, CTF, duels, JM -- it's all good. And maybe we should have a minimum of 2 players, so that at least you'll have bots to fight if you're the lone MA-JKII peep on the server. Maybe this is all best dealt with in other threads.

We are indeed running Dual Xeon servers for all games, and have been for about two weeks now.
Astyanax
That settles that!
I agree with bird, maybe start another thread about prefs for maps, skins, type of admin mod (I know there are several, dunno what they all do) and gametypes. Oh, and of course the player limit thing too.

Re: Servers?
if we still do the 5$/mo thing per person, then we could get a 16 pereson, but some people may not be able to contribute yet/regularily, so if you guys want a 12, thats fine too.
as far as who has FTP access, that should definately be limited to a couple people. if you want a skin or two, ask. if you want a mod or two, ask. but we dont want a ton of stuff on the server that people are going to have to dowload and soem of it may be buggy (trust me, ive gotten my fair share of crappy downloads that i dont want to share with you guys
), and should be aggreed on.
as far as the rest of the powers, im not exactly sure as to what all the options are, if the map vote option thing can be like ut where you can pick among all the maps in rotation, thats cool
maybe we could do a rotating daily or weekley thing for what style the server is on, or if there is a configuration that is heavily favored by the peps, then we have it on that every day but once or twice a week or something...

Re: Servers?
You know, $5/mo. just isn't that bad. I can probably still do it before the job kicks in.
Rotating maps is a good idea, but rotating game types can be bad if everyone's all into a certain game type and then it switches. But I guess as long as voting's on, it wouldn't be so bad. I presume mods can change gametypes without a vote. I forget if one can vote on Force power level and the like. Plus, there may be times when we'd like to disable only certain guns, or certain force powers. I know that I often like duels where only saber powers and jump are on, maybe sometimes we'd like to experiment with it. Well, I guess that's what admins are for.
I'm rambling. Where do I send the check?
(I know, I know ... soon, young padawan, soon ... )
