Re: X Box... The best and the worst

We bought an xBox last year and love it.
We only play two games though - Halo & Ghost Recon. We have a couple others but these are the mainstays and we haven't really looked too closely at other games in a while. We're pretty much waiting for Halo 2 (unfortunately that'll be April 2004) and we'll be good for another year...

I like the big controller, but I have big hands. We bought a smaller controller for the wife to use and she's real comfortable with it (we go on loooooong playing binges - played for close to 18 hours straight when we first bought it, but that's easy to do with Halo).

Can't comment on xBox live or on linking. We were gonna try to do linked games with a friend but he then sold his. He now wishes he hadn't.

I've talked to others who have sold theirs to get a different system and are now going back to xBox.

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

I think Ghost Recon is much more fun to play on the computer. Man 32 player games. Whooh. Fun stuff. I dont have one, but I have played on a friends. What are you  planning to play on it. If it's mainly for Halo. Wait for the mac version, if  your comp can run it.

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

Here are the reasons I bought one instead of a PS2 (no particular order).
1) E-net out of the box
2) 5.1 Dolby Digital sound during game play (PS2 only does it during cut scenes)
3) HDTV support
4) Hard Drive
5) Better Graphic Chip Set

For me Live is where it's at. You can't compare playing the CPU vs. real people. Watching/playing a dozen Mechs in a cityscape, destroying all is sooo cool. Oh, almost forgot all the trash and smack talk you can handle to boot! smile Down side to Live is the 128K or better broadband connection that is required. There are hacks out there to get it to run on a modem, but you will have your a$$ handed to you by people with better pings.

The controller would make my hands and arms tired after some marathon play (6+ hours). The Controller-S does not do this to me. I like it a lot.

Games, well everyone knows PS2 has Xbox beat hands down in terms of sheer numbers. To argue quality is mute because everyone has a different opinion on what makes a quality game. This is going to be up to the individual. Personally I think there are enough great games out there to warrant a purchase.

Microsoft, the big fly in the ointment, I'll give credit where credit is due. I think they have produced an out standing product. They seem to be behind it 100% and are dedicated to see it succeed. When Sony announced PSX, Microsoft followed suit with some tidbits of Xbox2. It will be interesting to see how this EA and Sony deal pans out. How will M$ react and counter, too early to tell.

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

i have one.  i think its a great system, and xbox live is a pretty cool thing.  i like the old controls for FPS (becuase of the button layout), but for everything else i prefer the S-control.  as a owner of the toher consoles, i can say that games out on all three major systems are indeed better on the box.  they have a lot of great cames coming out, and they have (imo) a better library than thwe cube, and its getting close to the two.  i love the other systems as well, i just think that the xbox is the best gaming experience...the graphics are great on my TV using component out, the sound is fantastic using the optical out, and the gameplay is great.

if youre getting the box with JSRF and Sega GT, youre lucky, becuase JSRF is one of the best games i have played in years.

2) 5.1 Dolby Digital sound during game play (PS2 only does it during cut scenes)

Actually a few abstract titles for the PS2 support DTS for full fledge 5.1 in gameplay such GTA:VC and SSX Tricky. A few newer titles like NBA Street use Prologic II (a far cry from discrete multichannel audio).

Still, the Xbox by far and away has the best surround sound support seeing most games rock Dolby Digital. If I have a choice on which platform, I tend to go with the Xbox outside of a few arcade sports games like SSX series, NBA Street series where the controls are best suited for the PS2 (thanks to the 4 shoulder pads).

Has anyone else played the original dreamcast version of this game: Jet Grind Radio? This is one of my all-time favorite games. I bought my dreamcast for like $40 when they were clearancing them at Target, and this game made the whole system worth it. That, and Blue Stinger. If anyone here has played blue stinger (especially as a drinking game... 'I like it Janine!') you HAVE to tell me, wow... that is an amazing game.

I'm apologizing for this post before i even hit submit... but if someone out there share's my dreamcast awesomeness, i'd love to hear about it.

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

just so you know, halo 1 is not xbox live.  halo 2 will be, but I wanted to make sure you didn't buy it only to be dissapointed.

that being said, the 139 and 50 for halo will EASILY pay for itself.  especially if you have friends that are into gaming.  system link with halo is the most fun ever.  for my bachelor party in 3 weeks, we're going to cedar point (amusment park) and staying over in a hotel where we will be playing halo, 3 on 3 over 2 boxes until the sun comes up.

In terms of graphics and hardware, the xbox is the highest quality system out there.  in terms of game titles, yes, PS2 and even gamecube tend to have a larger selection (GC and XBOX are neck and neck with total games I think)  but seriously, with halo and one or 2 others like the new brute force, mechassault, NBA street jams, or tao feng, there are many many hours of enjoyment in that little black box.

I'd get XBox for Deus Ex: Invisible War because I don't want to get a PeeCee for just that game (although control might be better on a PC because of the nature of the game)

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

Check out

http://www.cheapassgamer.com

for good game deals.

If you have Broadband, get Xbox Live.  If not, still get the Xbox.  I love mine.  It runs Wolfenstein better than my 15 inch FP iMac, in Dolby Digital and progressive scan.  With voice chat over live.

Brute Force is awesome- attempt to actually it play like a squad game and you will LOVE it.

Mech Assault over LIVE is a sight to behold.  Especially when somone dies in the middle of a crowded field.  Mini-nuke time.

Of course, Splinter Cell rocks the house.  And Halo.  And serious sam ($20 bucks, ridiculous and simple but fun).  Midtown Madness 3,  and Vice City (without the "GTA" on the front)  will be coming out.

Also, imagine Unreal II running smoothly on your TV, with cooperative AND competitive multiplayer (with class based teams like in TRIBES!), on your sweet Xbox.

And Hunter: the reckoning.  Gauntlet meets Resident Evil.  I love it.

The downside?  Man, my Xbox is big.  I'm no fan of tyhe eighties styling, either.  ;-)

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

Yes, Halo is great fun. I always thought, "How can you play a game on little sticks?" Then I tried it, and was hooked. I'm liking the whole dual analog thing for FPS's. Get yourself to some LAN parties and have a blast. A friend of mine works at a TV repair shop, they let us rent it at night to play Halo sometimes. (Those 60" TV's need to be left on for testing anyway)

I can't stand the big controllers, but some people like them. Haven't tried live, have no urge to right now. I'm not to fond of online gaming when you can play LAN or paintball a couple times a week. Internet stinks in comparison.

So there's:
Halo (nothing to be said here)
Splinter Cell (very linear, but fun)
Brute Force (Fun but horrible AI, and mediocre single player)
Knights of the Old Republic (dang you Target, why can't you have it in stock yet!!)
Deus Ex (TBR Oct, will be great)
StarCraft Ghost (TBR Nov, will be great)

Also:
Time Splitters (OK game, simple level maker, can be had for $15)
Ghost Recon (Get it for computer if you can)
Jedi Outcast (Get it for computer if you can)

Blue stinger was the worst $9.95 I have ever spent. Drinking game indeed. If you drink enough, it starts to be interesting.

okay, yes, that's true. Blue stinger is a terrible game. But imagine this: it is the last day of high school/the first night of summer before your senior year. after going out for fun, an intimate gathering of friends develops at your house. You download the walkthrough, power up the game genie and open a bottle...

for the rest of the evening/morning you battle through Blue Stinger (with the help of invincibility and alcohol) and as the plot thickens you become engrossed in what will happen next.

i'mconvinced no one else in the world had the same experience i did with blue stinger, but if you have any friends with a sense of humor and night to kill, i would recommend you revisit the horror that is blue stinger (i think of it as a video game equivalent to rocky horror picture show -- laughably bad in every way, except the cinematic, overbearing musical score... man... i'm welling up...)

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

Actually X-box beats the crap out of both systems cry  cry  cry

I hate to say it, but for halo only, I'd get it. Also has some othe very handy game that are x box only. And If you want to spend 200$$ more, you can get that game with the giant game controller.

That said I'll stay with Nintendo and Sony becasue of Square and nintendo only's. Wind waker, FF anything, and Xenosaga ae all PS2/GC only, and they are all amazing. I mean wow eek .

But what ever floats you boat...

Re: X Box... The best and the worst

Anything you are asking would require a modded Xbox. You can play different types of media files on an xbox, but you have to mod it to do it. Xbox will play only DVD's. Similarly, if you want to copy files onto your Xbox HD, you would need to be running linux on it, which requires a modded Xbox.

oh and I hear XBox can play DVDs!
Do I need an extra purchase for this to work?
like a controller of some kind?

oh and i hear XBox may soon have games worth playing, other than Halo!
Wouldn't that rock?!
