Importing '.mpg' into iMovie and iDVD

Right, so I'm trying to make a DVD of all of my favorite music videos, when I import them into iMovie, the video looks great but the sound is muted, non existant. iDVD will not even recognize the files, every time I try to import an mpg, I get an unsupported file type message. How can I import mpegs into either one of these applications?!

Open your .mpg in "QuickTime Pro" Export it as .mov file using DV compression.  Then import it to iMovie.

Re: Importing '.mpg' into iMovie and iDVD

oo oo oo... only problem is that MPEG is a muxed format (That is, it "muxes" the audio and video track into one track so you cant separate them), so the above listed method would be fine and dany if you just wanted the video track.  However, you wont be able to get any audio doing it that way... hence "the sound is muted, non existant."

So... you need a demuxing app.  I suggest MPGTXWRAP... umm... go to versiontracker.com and search for MPEG or Demux, this app should show up.  It splits the MPEG into 2 files (A .mv1 MPEG-1 video file, and a .mp2 mpeg audio file).  iTunes can play and decode .mp2 files, so open the .mp2 in iTunes, and use iTunes to make them into .aiff files.  Then import the .aiff files into iMovie and sync them with the video clips.  Easy, fast and free.
