web1000.com
Offers:
No ads.
50 MB of space
'No bandwidth limits' - Sorta:
We use an aggresive filtering system to keep our bandwidth use to a level that allows us to keep paying the bills. When our overall bandwidth use is high, we take serveral steps, including: Aggresively preventing people from hotlinking images, movies, and other large files from third party sites; blocking sites from serving overly large files that will bring the site into a situation where the ratio of bytes served to html pages served is too large; and blocking sites from serving certain file types associated with hotlinking and other activity prohibited by our terms of services. Because we use cookies to determine some of these parameters, and we assume the worst case when cookies cannot be used, customers who are unable to accept cookies will find these limitations to be imposed with greater frequency than other customers.
password protected 'members' areas
They have some common shared CGI scripts (yabb bulletin board, form2mail, counter, etc)
They have a beta 'site move' tool. You simply set up your site on your computer, add a special link to your home page, and turn websharing on. You then tell them to grab your site from your computer, and their script 'crawls' the site on your computer, copies the files, and uploads them to your webspace.
cons:
No PHP/SQL/Custom CGIs
No email forwarding/POP accounts

50MB for free that works with Mac?!!! For free really?!! Come on really?!!
Well if its not bad then maybe I can finally say bye to geocities. Getting tired of the dang bandwith limitation crapola on geocities. You can max it out in only a min. Id like to not have to scrimp on every lil file to get things to not max out.

Re: Need help finding a free hosting place...
It's not specifically designed to work with a mac or a pc. Most hosts are like that.
Web1000 doesn;t have the nifty automagic picture page generator/slide show that .mac has, but you can always create your own HTML pages to display the images and then upload it all via FTP (or do the websharing feature they have).

Pfft, that can be done in JavaScript or better, use Photoshop's make webpage feature. Then you can just edit the page to your hearts desire.

Re: Need help finding a free hosting place...
so what if i just want to use it for pictures and one or two mp3's (and yes, i mean one or two, not a ton, but id also prefer to not have the 5mb size limit) that just means im out of luck, huh? oh yeah, and id still like to be able to upload several items at once, not just one at a time, cause im lazy and i have 56k, and id like to just have a bunch of things uploading at one time, and i can just walk away and hope there isnt a problem
*sigh*

Re: Need help finding a free hosting place...
i seem to remember someone mentioning around the time the whole stupid .mac thing happend that if you had an earthlink account you could get 20 mb web space for each password. am i just on crack imagining things again? i have an earthlink email that i use, but my dad wont give me my password (
), so i dont use it exclusively (my yahoo account is a couple/few years older then it anyways). if i could use that as web space, that would make me happy, and i might get dad to give me my password
. anyone know about file size limits on that, or bandwith limits?
