MapVote...
I vote we trim the maps in rotation a lil bit. Does anyone got a full list of all the maps so we can see them?
I dont know about everyone else but the nar shadda maps are getting on my nerves fast. They just become spam fests fast with everyone falling constantly. Usually the winner is the person that throws the most ppl off too
. Then theres that Bespin shafts level, which isnt too bad but it gets like the ns maps at times.
Maybe we can replace them with something better. Ear, youve been crusing a lot of maps lately. Got any maps that shine above all the others you found? Right now the only one I want on is the Duel map: Kamino, havent had a chance to check a lot of the others.

DeathStar is kind of fun.

The one thing I've been disappointed in with JK2 is the third-party mapping scene.
Coming from UT, where there was such a huge volume of great maps to choose from, most of the arenas I've looked over are just terrible.
Most of the quality mapping effort seems to have gone into duel maps, which is why I found so "many" good ones in that category.
Even with those, I keep hoping for something more professional and movie-related instead of some vaguely Star Wars-themed crap thrown together on a whim.
The only thing I've come across that fits the bill so far is the FFA part of Naboo Reactor Room called Duel of the Fates (filename "dotf.pk3" in the duel map pack).
It looks awesome (like it came straight out of Episode I) and feels awesome (especially when somebody is using either the Obi Wan, Qui Gon, or Darth Maul models
).
The only problem with it is that it's SLOW.
I was dropping into low teens for framerate hosting it on my 1 GHz Cube while fighting and moving between the main areas.
The way the Q3 engine in this port works is retarded, BTW: if there's any open space leading to another big section of the map (windows, doors), it has to render that whole section whether you're looking at it or not.
There are places in the singleplayer game where I'll be looking at a wall at a 90 degree angle from a door that leads outside, and while the door is open I get 15 fps, but the second it closes it jumps to 75 (capped by vsync
).
I mean, come on, most modern game engines choose not to render what it can't see, thereby making the game much faster (even UT does this, and UT is old and crappy), why can't JK2?
[/rant]
So my recommendation is to get GtkRadiant and start making our own quality maps

Re: MapVote...
Yeah I was noticing that too. There was a guy trying to recreate the droid control ship but I dont know how far he was into it.
Not just JKII that has this problem, its Elite Force too. The amount of quality 3rd party maps is pathetic.
Well maybe we should just vote off the maps we dont like on there right now or something. Im not a fan of Imperial Labs either.
Ya know, I wish there was a death star surface CTF map. Ya know with the trench in the middle and flag stations on both sides with the turrets modeled/etc. Would be sweet. Heck i'd make it myself but I dont want to have to do all those steps just to get Radiant to work. Geez, you have to practically port it yourself just to get it to work. Those creators of Radiant are just to freaken lazy

Re: MapVote...
If we must trim maps, I'd vote for losing imperial and ns-streets. Warring factions is still a good ctf map, but those two tend to blow.

Re: MapVote...
hrrmmmmm, those are maps that came with the game, and so they are ingraned the assets0.pk3 file.... it would be nice if the map vote came up automatically after each map is won, instead of being randomly selected, but yeah, they are good maps for force hoes, so ill see if i can mess with it
im gonna install a second copy of JKII now, and rip open the file, and take out some maps and see how the game acts
as for the gtkradient issue, its not about lazyness, its about time and money. although i hear people asking about it for osx all the time, the demand for osx is small compared to the demand for it for windoze. the amount of people who know how to develop for osx is tiny compared to the amout of people who develop in general. there is also the money. these people have to suppourt themselves, and porting for us dosent exactly pay well
. im on the osx gtk radient mailing lists, and i can send you some info on the current status if you want (although its a bit large to copy and paste here). there has been a lot of talk of it dying due to lack of developers, so it may just stay in the "you have to finish it yourself" stage forever. i know a couple of people here have gotten it working though.
