Just got the August issue...

Well, it's my first subscription issue as my old subscription ended a year ago and I didn't renew due to the changes the magazine was going through.  Instead, I continued to buy it at my local newsstand.  So now that I'm a subscriber again, I'd just like to say, "WHAT HAPPENED?!?"

I missed an issue or two in the last year, but where's the edgy magazine I remember?  I've been a reader since issue #5, and I think that the magazine, while still the best Mac mag around, isn't nearly as good as used to be!

First off: Where's Max?  Except for the website, it seems you guys have totally disowned him.  He is a beloved mascot, bring him back dammit!

Secondly: Letters at the back of the mag?  What were/are you thinking?  And let's see some good letters!  I haven't heard from Reuben Reynoso in a while, have you?

Thirdish: The Edge.  No, I'm not talking about Pizza Hut.  What happened to the Mac Magazine that took risky moves.  Remember Adobe Clown?

Fouthth:  Staff videos.  No offense to your singing, Rik, but the video was really boring.  Let's see some PC-Bashing action!  And bring back that hot Icky Nikki while you're at it!

Other than that, I'm glad to be a subscriber again!

Forged in darkness from wheat harvested in hell's half acre. Baked by Beelzebub. Slathered with mayonnaise beaten from the evil eggs of dark chicken force-fed to dogs by the hands of a one eyed mad man. Cheese boiled from the rancid teat of fanged cow. Layered with 666 separate meats from an animal which has maggots for blood.

Re: Just got the August issue...

I believe being "edgy" lost out in favor of making "money."  I miss the wacky Letters section (and contributed to it quite frequently), but that was a different time.  It's still a good magazine.

I've only got one problem with the August issue, and it has nothing at all to do with the things you've mentioned here.

WHERE ARE THE G5s?

WHERE ARE THE G5s?

The announcement of the G5 was made on June 23rd; the August issue had shipped to the printer a few weeks before that.  Print publishing doesn't move in Internet time -- so check out our September issue for the down 'n' dirty skinny on the G5s.

I know I shouldn't take the bait and enter into another "MacAddict-sucks/where's-Max?/used-to-cool-but-now-it's-not/letters-suck/staff-videos-don't-bash-enough-peecees/"it-definately-isnt-as-good-(sic)" debate. So I won't. As Paul Simon once wrote, "Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day; And I'm trying to get some rest; That's all I'm trying to get some rest."

Got a good October issue brewing.  Need to work on editing chunks of it tomorrow.

Re: Just got the August issue...

What is missing is what I used to call the Mac Addict Personality. Gone are the wacky contests(my favorite was making songs out of system sounds). Gone are the creative people verses magazine journalist mentality, which basically means that unlike other computer magazines which are basically a collection of reviews, and ads. Mac Addict was about creative ideas, mods, and system tweaks that were just plain fun.

We know that when the logo changed, and then was sold to that other media group the magazine lost it's identity. How can we be creative, yet still be a computer magazine. Well we have been through a bunch of editors, and staff changes in the past 5 years. I know it is hard to get advertisers for a magazine full of tweaks and tips, but I guess it doesn't pay to be different.

When the included CD lost all those essential utilities, and fun contests....I lost interest. I still read the site, but it too lost all of the meat of the magazine. The forums are the best part of the website, other wise I would go to the anemic MacHome site which always takes forever in a day to load. Oh well....ah memories....

Re: Just got the August issue...

I would agree with you, umm... if  you had only written this a while ago. Its currently getting back to where it used to be... and what do you mean no wacky contests? they have a contest right now where they are giving away a 23inch sony display if ya come up with a witty/humorous caption to go with that picture. I dont recall them every giving out a prize so expensive back in the early days. (pssst.. the next prize should be a G5!)

I dont have any complaints about the current state of the mag.. GOOD STUFF.. keep it up!.. dont get me started on the disk and the current state of shareware though.. tongue

Re: Just got the August issue...

Maybe they don't want to scare off the switchers....

MacAddict still has more creativity than some other fine Mac mags I could mention (and seldom read anymore).  The writing style is not the pure tech-talk/pro journalist drone you get elsewhere and the surveys are brilliant, for example...

Name me a better Mac mag if you can.  It's just like computers-  Macs aren't perfect, but they are the best we've got.

Definately. MacAddict, IMHO give you better information in their articles, especially those that announce new Macs.

Re: Just got the August issue...

I agree.  MacAddict isn't what it used to be (I started subscribing with issue 7), but it is they best we have.  It's still is more "me, you're average user" than any other Mac mag out there.

Re: Just got the August issue...

mad

Oh, will you all please shut up? As TonyPrevite said in the most recent "bring back the old Max" thread, this dead horse has been beaten into something resembling a blob. Sosumi is right: the magazine had to make money, and comparing my old issues to my new ones makes me wonder what the hell they were thinking back around 1997. The design was ridiculous, the jokes were inane, and the magazine felt childish. If you couldn't tell, I love the new MA. Kudos to Rik and the rest of the crew for making it what it is today!

Re: Just got the August issue...

Hey, Rik, instead of saying that you WON'T get "dragged into" a debate over the recent drop of personality and wit in the magazine, why don't you just give a brief statement about it? We aren't seeking an argument, we just want change. And this is the feedback forum after all. Any chance at bringing back the "good ol' days of MacAddict". Or is the new style here to stay? I mean, either way, its a good rag. The personality just makes the difference between a great read and a good read.

Re: Just got the August issue...

Personally, I like the newest magazines. If you are too funny, you can't be informative. I think that its the best Mac mag out. I think that Rik is doing a great job as editor, but I would like to see less staff changes.

And I think that the contests are good.

I'd like the contests too, but I live in one the "void where prohibited by law" states.  ARGH!!  Could someone explain exactly why the contests are void in those states??  (Not as if MD is against gambling.  They advertise their own gambling ad nauseum on TV/radio/newspapers).
