Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
Alright, so I have to do this extra credit report for school since I'm failing a certain class.
What I have to do is compare Canadian student's education with that of a US student's education. I'm pretty sure there are a couple Canadian people in here so any help from you would be great.
I have most of my info, right now I'm trying to find out why Canadian students are supposedly smarter.
Any help would be great.

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
If you post what information you have on american students, I'm sure I can find out the Canadian equivalents. I'm just not sure what you are looking for specifically.

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
yeah... giving an example of what kinda information you want could definitely help.
and i dunno if either canadian students or american students are "smarter"
it's defintely unfair to generalize either way.
but i have a of respect for the public education that i've recieved.

Yea, it would be interesting to see the data that you have. We American students are notorious for being below the rest of the world. As for if Canadian or America students are smarter, who cares? The Japanese outsmart us all! haha

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
I think it's a regional issue, not a national one. Here in the east the quality of education has really gone downhill compared to Ontario and the west, and I can't think of any school that would compare to the one Malkin went to in the US.

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
Wasn't there just some UN study done about geography and knowledge and such? Some 30% of students questioned in the US couldn't point out the Pacific Ocean or something... Canadian kids were almost as bad I think. I recall this being in an issue of Maclean's not too long ago... anyone?

Oh, and we are "smarter" because we don't spend all our time worrying about standardized tests

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
Smarter? No. Better educated? Perhaps. However, there is a wide range in the quality of education received across the States and probably in Canada as well. Also, just because the government or a school board deems something worthy of knowing doesn't mean it actually is. There are plenty of things I was taught in school that are completely useless in the Real World.

You need to be more specific as to what kind of information you want. Education is a very broad topic.

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
I would assume that like any respectible survey they had a certain sample from various high schools around the nation.
Trying to remember who did the survey - it was a semirespectible organisation... I read about it on MSN a while back... Hrmm...
Do you have an issue with the way the survey was taken? Or do you question other statistics made publicly available simply because not every person has been physically interviewed?

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
As I always tell myself, 50% of the population is below average. My elementary school had 300 students, of whom a full classroom - roughly 30 - were 'developmentally disabled.' Yeah, it's sad, but there's your ten percent.
The tests which determine whose graduates are smarter are somewhat biased. For one thing, they compare 17 and 18 year old students from the US with 20-22 year olds from Asia. For whatever reason, they just spend longer in school, and they drill math and science whilewe're sitting in classrooms getting lectures on how to put on a condom.
The other problem, IMO, is with us. We the people of the Teens With Macs Forum represent the best and the brightest of our generation(s). We are, after all, able to use a computer. There are plenty of people in this country who don't want to learn, who eek through high school ad then spend the rest of their lives working in a video store. However, these people also take tests. A lot of them don't even get their diplomas. These differences are cultural, but I'm not sure what the delineation is, if any - I think it's just the vibe of a town or even a school.
My High School: 99% graduation rate, 90% of graduating seniors attend college. My 3.6 GPA was good for 80th place in a class of 400. Minimum GPA to play sports was 2.5, Water polo was popular.
My Brother's High School: 80% graduation rate, 50% of graduating seniors go to college. My Brother's got a 2-point-something and is on the honor roll. Minimum GPA to play a sport is 1.4 and they're trying to get it lowered. Half the town turns out for fotball games & they've never heard of water polo.
Somewhere along the line smart people became uncool. Welcome to the "Heartland of America."
I hate it here.

It is true that alot of students in my school just don't give a smurf (I'd say about 1/4 of them could not care less about school).
And off to school I go.

Re: Canadian Students... (HELP ME)
I don't think it's so much a question of smarter, just more educated. If someone goes to a private school they aren't necessarily smarter, but they will supposedly get a better education. This just means that they are wealthy, not necessarily smart.
Here on the north shore of Vancouver, At my school West Van Hight, it's one of the top rated public schools in BC. It usually fluctuates around the 2nd or 3rd rated public schools in BC, or so we're told. I can't remember the last person who didn't graduate, aside from dropouts, and 90% of our students go to university or college. almost a quarter of our grade twelves get scholarships of some sort. Here, about 80 of the 200 grade 10 students are on the honor role (3.67 GPA or higher) and about 40% of the student body takes all enriched courses. Being smart isn't a bad thing here. Most of the struggling kids are really nice to the smart kids, mostly so that they'll help them. Myself, well I have received the Principal's Award of Merit every year of High School, and this is the award that the school gives to the 3-5 top well rounded (not just academics, but they are the most important factor) students of each grade. (Sorry, I don't mean to sound conceited or anything, I'm just trying to put some perspective on this for Bundy) We also have the IB (International Baccalaureate) program and the Challenge Program; both are very successful. Last year there were over 50 IB Diploma Graduates. This basically means that they did the grade 11 and 12 curriculum in their grade 11 year, and then in grade 12 they finish up some grade 12 stuff, and start first year university. Usually, IB graduates get to skip first year of University.
Anyway, that's my school. At my cousin Natalie's school, Windsor, in North Van, well things are a bit different. I don't know many statistics, but I have gone to her school for a day and went to all her classes with her (this was set up and allowed by the school) when my school had a pro D day and they didn't. Anyway, from what I saw and what she tells me, things aren't so nice there. Basically, there is a far smaller percentage of kids in the enriched programs, and overall, the school seems to put very little importance on any enriched programs. The scholarship, graduation, and post-highschool education rates are all much lower. Although I have to admit their arts program is very successful and there is a very high participation level. Also, many of the kids there seem to believe that all West Van kids' families are filthy rich, blah blah blah. This is completely untrue. West Van is the wealthiest area of Greater Vancouver, (well there is also an area called Shaugnessy, but West Van is actually a city in itself) but not all people there are rich. This is very far from the truth. For example, both my parents are public school teachers, and the situation in Canada is even worse than the US. There was even a nasty strike this year, and the teachers were forced to come back. Even now, many teachers refuse to participate in extra curricular activities etc., which is perfectly understandable, but also frustrating for the students. Anyway, West Van is in a nice area, but the kids aren't rich, many people, like my family, were smart and bought their houses almost 30 years ago when the price was low, and now have watched the price increase over 15X what they paid.
Then there is Surrey. Surrey and East Van are the not so nice areas of Greater Vancouver. In some of the schools there, the post education rate is less than 20%, and the smarter kids kind of live in fear of bullies etc. There were even 2 or 3 kids who committed suicide in the past couple of years from excessive bullying.
Basically, I'd say you can't really generalize a whole country. More school by school, or at the most, area by area.
Also, I know that jkahless and torque guy both live around Vancouver, but I don't know where specifically torque guy lives, and I don't really know about the school situation in White Rock where jkahless lives, as it is pretty far out from the city, but maybe their experiences will be different? I don't know

I am not trying to be sarcastic, but seriously what is Water Polo. Maybe I have not heard of it because I am on the East Coast.
Explaination, please?
