G5 questions before the pre-order....

I'll be pre-ordering my G5 this week, so I need some help on a few of the options:

Video Card:  Is it worth the extra $45 to bump up from the GeForce FX 5200 to the Radeon 9600.  I'm going to be using this thing for both Photoshop + Games...

Monitor:  I don't really have the cash for a nice LCD Flat pannel - these things still support your standard PC VGA monitor, correct?

Airport:  Does a standard Airport card fit in them?  I've got one of those, wouldn't mind not having to buy a new one.

.Mac:  Can I get the "promotional bundle" and use it to re-up my account for the next year?

Tried looking for the answers to these, couldn't find them.  Thanks in advance!

Re: G5 questions before the pre-order....

Definitely get the Radeon 9600... the FX5200 is crap.  If you can afford it, go for the 9800 though... smile

The G5 will come with a DVI to VGA adapter, so your current monitor will be fine.

Only Airport Extreme is supported, since it is backwards compatible with 802.11b (Airport).  There would be no need for Apple to include a slot for old-style Airport cards.

As for .Mac, I dunno... probably. smile

Re: G5 questions before the pre-order....

1) get the Radeon. The ATi cards have typically been better for 2d work and I see a few glitches on a GForce 4 64 MB card that I don't see on my ATi 9000, so I overall prefer ATi to nVidia.

2) It should come with a VGA - DVI adapter.

3) No, it'll use Airport Extreme, so you'll need to put an Airport Extreme card it in but it will still connect to your older wireless network.

4) Don't know.

Video Card:  Oh yeah... ATI is better proformance I say.

Monitor:  The G5 should come with a little adapter so they will plug in.

Airport:  --yes

.Mac:  I cant think why not, anyone know the answer for sure?

Another vote for the ATi. The 9600 is considerably better than the 5200.

Re: G5 questions before the pre-order....

Well, since December I've purchased:

A 12" PowerBook G4,
A dual 1.25 tower
A 20" Cinema Display,
2 iPods
Other assorted odds and ends.

Apple wouldn't let me use the promotional discount to re-up .Mac  mad

Good luck to you though...

My personal opinion is that the incentive to renew is better than the rebate for purchasing a new machine.  Wasn't Sim City 4 one of the options?  I'll be cashing in on that one.  smile

Well - then I'll go the "more difficult" way, and re-up.  Then choose the free $30 bucks and throw it towards my new computer.

I think he meant Student Developer Discount.  Still I would have gone for the 1.8 Ghz because of the better mother board...

Nope, I'm no developer - I can barely code HTML heh.  Just the normal Education discount for me...
