Re: Wow

. . .  the best ent part was the flaming ent . . .

. . . I was rather amused when he ran and stuck his head in the water as it rushed by. It looked funny compared to all the other Ents who were standing their ground waiting for it to rush past . . .

Actually that part differs from the books.  One Ent was killed by being set on fire.  In the book, the Ents then attacked Orthanc and made a small chip in it.  Otherwise even their awesome strength could not damage that magical tower.

Sometimes the ways the director deviated from the books is truly mystifying.  They seem unnecessary.

I quite agree. Even though it's been quite some time since I read the book (though I'm rereading it now, I'm on The Two Towers, finished ch. 1 before I saw the movie), I noticed a few things that didn't really make sense as to why they were changed... Faramir's character for one.

Faramir's character for one.

Yeah, and Gandalf meeting Treebeard, Merry, and Pippin in the forest, and the ents deciding at the moot not to go attack Isengard.  But all in all, I think it was done quite well.

Yep.

And I know my youth group's resident Lord of the Rings fan would agree with you, too... seeing as how we were giving him a hard time for seeing the movie 4 times in 6 days! Speaking of which, how many times has everyone seen it?

Re: Wow

My only problem with the movies is that for the most part the dialog is just getting shuffled around.  In the book Frodo will say the line but in the movie they passed it off to Gandalf for reasons unknown.  And I just read the book version of the whole Ent business and the movie completely jumpled the whole thing around.  At first when Treebeard gets all riled up immediately I had thought the "it's not our business" thing was strictly made up, but then it seems the big differences come later in the chapter.

I like the books sticking with one frame of reference at a time.  The whole four plot thing was a little bothersome at times, but that's how you have to do it in a movie I suppose because all this stuff was happening at the same time.  And the movie folk really went off on minor tangents in order to actually give some characters defintion.  Reading along Sauraman is nothing but hearsay until the near end of TTT.

Re: Wow

what the heck is "l337n335" or whatever? What's going on here? Is the language-filter on the forums acting up?

Re: Wow

I'm a big fan of Tolkien, and I have read the books and still like the movies-- too many of you people are getting caught up in the discrepancies between the two. The movie isn't SUPPOSED to be exactly the same, it would be like 14 hours long for one, so its just impractical. The storylines are generally the same with only minor deviations, maybe some characters says others' lines, but the line is still said, appreciate it for what it is and don't worry about the comparisons.  The books and movies are awesome, each in their own rights.

It's a different medium.  It's like translating between two different languages.  The mean stays the same, the wordiing is different.

Re: Wow

Twice here, once the first show on opening night with my friends, then on, like, the 23rd with my sister and a few of her friends.

On a side note, my leather collector's edition LOTR should be here today! Yay!

True, and as I'm rereading the books again, I generally find myself laughing, or at least smiling, whenever a line said by one character is said by another in the movies. However, there are still some differences that I don't really think are necessary, but I am willing to reserve judgement on that until I've completely reread the books and seen the third film. 'Sides that, the movies are still just plain fun to watch.
