Idea!
I just had a great idea!
I was thinking, that if we found some good free shell accounts (I wonder if they have Darwin shells available) that support background processes, wouldn't it be possible to put SETI@Home on them and keep them on 24/7? Of course you'd have to add a script to relaunch SETI in case of a server crash/restart, but it's not too hard to do that. Tell me what you think...

Re: Idea!
We shouldn't be too enthusiastic about Distributed computing! After all, the main reason a "normal"
person buys a computer is to achieve his goals of modern computing (like... WP, Internet, game, stuff....) Distributed Computing only kicks in when those objectives are met, and the computer has some idle time left.
Some of us believe that there's ET out there; but even so, we shouldn't be spending thousands of $$$ in hardware or hundreds in monthly electric bills just to run SETI.
Btw, we've got stiff competition from the Folding people. I think we should seriously sit down (over a LIVE chat) and discuss where to dedicate our long term processing power. Waddaya think?

Re: Idea!
I've already started moving to Folding@Home. My Powerbook G3 is running Seti, while my 1Ghz DP G4 is Folding.
If you do decide to start Folding, make sure you join Team MacAddict4Life, team ID# 18.
