Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

People. Be honest here. I've added a poll to my message, and honestly answer.

Yes, but if it's worth it I end up buying it.  Consider it illegal demo'ing. tongue

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

up I, would never buy an album to try it out. I would download some songs and if its cool I'll buy it. I've discovered pink floyd, led zeppelin, and Queen this way, and if it wasn't for illegal music, I would still be buying blink 182 records! Rock on DH!

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I've tried downloading stuff, but I never had much luck in getting something of quality. The connection usually craps out!

We just buy one copy, and share it among 3 or 4 of us in the house!
Did you know that Excel X actually checks the LAN for copies running on other computers?  evil

I download Windows games just to beat them. There's so much worthless stuff out there, I would hate myself if I bought it all.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I've only downloaded a few songs illegally (maybe 5-10) because I just don't have the patience to do it on a dial-up connection.  Also, I always seem to get the crappiest quality songs.  I have a bunch of songs in my iBook that I wouldn't listen to normally that wound up there because everyone else in my family uses my iBook to burn CDs.  I don't ask how they got their various songs and I don't want to know...

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I'm surprised at how much bad luck people have finding good versions of stuff.  hmmm

Anyway, I also use illegal downloading as a sampling service:  If I like it enough, I buy it.  It's like radio/TV movies without the wait.

Honestly, I think I'm paying more because of my downloading.  I've bought stuff I wouldn't have known about if I hadn't downloaded first, since I try hard not to spend my money on stuff I can't be sure I'll like.

I use my iPod every day, but it's nice to have genuine hard copies in my closet!

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

Since ITMS I've stopped d/l-ing freebies. Even then, I would only d/l music I've paid for a least once in my life, but somehow lost.

As a musician I can't really conscience d/l-ing or the record biz. smile

warez: no thanks. demos are fine if I'm curious about a software.

That's mostly the way I see it as well...

I just don't think that software or music should be limited to a certain number of computers or devices being used on in one household or LAN.
There are three members of this household that actively buy and use software and music. We are not going out and buying 3 copies of M$ Excel, just to be used on 3 different computers, in 3 different rooms, of this 1 household! That would be a big waste of money! However, if I was to move out, and I wanted a new copy of Excel, yes, I would buy my own! I feel that it should be the same way with music. I'm going to buy a song once, and make as many copies as I personally need.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

Back in the 60's and 70's, I taped a lot of 33 LP albums that I either borrowed from a buddy or the library, plus I taped a lot from radio. In the later 60's, some FM stations started up playing rock as an alternative to top 40 type stations, and I would tape off of them. The DJ's usually gave their intro and then stopped talking, so you could get a "clean" recording - not saying they did this for that reason, just that was a result. I also bought a lot of vinyl at the same time.

Most of the music that I got from Napster and the like was stuff from those eras that at one time I legally owned

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I quit since ITMS came about. Zero. Zip. Zilch. I can't do it anymore without feeling really bad about it. I can't justify it. So I don't do it at all.
Thanks for reminding me to scrub LimeWire from my HD. I used it to get some old comedy recordings, but I have erased those too, after some thought.
I am once again clean. big_smile

If they didn't give guys like me a fair chance to try before I buy, they didn't really want my money anyways. And their customer service probably sucks. so nyah.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I guess I was one of the few people who used Napster legally shrug.  I downloaded quite a few songs, but almost all of them were songs I already had a license for (on vinyl or cassette, mostly).   The remainder were songs that I hadn't yet found a (hard) copy of, and I've since hunted down most of them.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

Ok this downloading thing is ok if your testing it but if I want a whole album.  I just go to the public library and burn it.  No harm there.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I was kinda annoyed at the questions in the Poll... How about the option "Have been bad in the past, and NO LONGER!"  That seems to be the feel from most of the posts here.

Hell yes, I've had bad things on my computer.  Have I in the past five years?  NO!!!

Music on a CD might start to be a thing of the past, especially with ITMS, but for now... Liner notes, and that actual FEEL of an album in my hands is important... I already had to give up VINYL... I'm not going to give up my CD's for a LONG TIME.

Re: Do you honestly ever download illegal music/software.

I download music and PC software, I never download any mac software.  If I really like a band I will go to a concert and give some money to them, I dont want the media chewing up the band's music to increase sales so I wont support them. So I suppose thats how I justify it, even though all my friends think poor of me for it... sad
