A loaded question!

Hey guys,

I have a few questions.  I need to purchase a PC for work and was wondering a few things.

First off, can I hook any PC up to my flatscreen monitor that came with my G4 Computer?  How about my keyboard and mouse?  I know I might need a converter, but is this possible?

Also, I want a cheap, but reasonably fast Win XP computer, where would you guys suggest purchasing it?  Thanks a million guys!

Re: A loaded question!

It will depend on what kind of monitor you have! if it is a non Apple DVI monitor, all you need is get a monitor switch from one of those small computer store(price much cheaper)

As for keyboard and mouse! again, I guess it will depend on if it is a apple brand

As for getting a useful but inexpensive wintel machine, look at bb/compusa weekend section, they usually have a 1.XXghz with dvd/cdrw for around 400 buck!

Re: A loaded question!

I'm not exactly sure what type of monitor I have, it's the flatscreen monitor that came with my G4 867 MHz computer.  Can I get this monitor switch at Radio Shack or Circut City?  Thanks a million for your help.

Re: A loaded question!

You'll need a DVI-ator, or whatever.

Its splits the Apple ADC connector into seperate DVI, USB, and power connections.

But if your monitor already has a seperate power cable, you just need a PC with a DVI port on the video card. Piece of cake!

Have fun shopping.

Re: A loaded question!

Why would you want to put all your stuff from your Mac onto a PC? Then you'll have to switch them everytime you want to use your Mac!

What do you need to do on this PC? There are plenty of sub $1000 PC's out there that include a monitor. They're quick, but not adequate for gaming because most have a cheap built in video board.

Re: A loaded question!

Will the DVI -> VGA adapter be enough?  The only cord coming out of my monitor is the DVI cable, so I am assuming that my monitor draws power form the computer.  Will this be the same on my PC?  Thanks guys!

Re: A loaded question!

If there's only one cable it's probably an ADC, not a DVI. and Apple's flat panel studio display's use ADC connections. so a VGA-DVI won't work on that.

*    Analog Video In
*    4X AGP Interface
*    32MB superfast DDR onboard memory
*    TV-Out port
*    Support Dual, Independant Digital Vibrance Engines
*    Onboard heatsink and cooling fan
*    Industry's fastest Direct3D and OpenGL acceleration
*    Dual Vertex Shaders are able to drive more than 100 million vertices per second
*    Hardware DVD video playback
*    3D graphics up to 2048x1536@60Hz
*    Full DirectX, Direct3D and OpenGL acceleration
*    Connectors VGA, DVI, S-Video In/Out

What type of adapter do I need to hook my computer up to my Apple Studio Display?

Thanks,

Re: A loaded question!

Are these the specs of your PC's card or the Mac's?

If you indeed have an Apple display, with an Apple display connection (ADC) then you will need this:
http://www.apple.com/displays/adapter.html

That's to hook the display up to a Mac with DVI. I don't know if it will work on a PC. I'm sure there's other companies that make them, they may or may not work to run Apple displays on PC's. Try doing some research. I found the above link by typeing "DVI to ADC" in www.google.com

Now if those specs you listed are for your Mac then your display probably doesn't have an ADC connection. In which case just buy a VGA to DVI adapter, OR make sure the computer has a DVI port.

Here is a picture of DVI and ADC ports. Look at your monitor connector, and figure out what you have.

Re: A loaded question!

Since no one answered, yes you can use your Apple keyboard and mouse with your pc. I hope you bought a third-party mouse though.. I can't imagine using windows (or osx, even) with a single button mouse.

Re: A loaded question!

That's your PCs video card, you need a DVI-ADC adapter, like a DVI-Ator or the Apple Powerbook Adaptor. They're over $100, last I checked. Sorry.

why bother with keyboard and mouse? You can get a $5 keyboards and $8 mice at almost any mom and pop computer shop.

Monitor might be worth it. Then again if you are going to pay $100+ for a converter, you might as well buy a cheap monitor for the PC.

Re: A loaded question!

Hey guys,
     I really appreciate the help!  The thing I like about using the same keyboard, mouse and especially monitor is that it'll put less junk on my desk.  But i'll just need to do a little more thinking about what's the best solution.  Maybe i'll find a used adapter or something along those lines.  Thanks a million guys!
