I have Seti on Mac OS X .2.3...

However, it is damnly slow to make a unit. (10-13 hours)
It seam to not use the full potential of my new G4 Dual 867.  sad

Any help?
Someone told me I need a special file to make it run correctly on 2 processor.

Re: Need help setting Seti...

Are you using the graphical client? If so, 12 hours for an 867 MHz machine isn't out of the ordinary.

Using the Command-Line client is complex to set up, but there are plenty of folks around here who know how to do it - I'm afraid I don't use OS X yet. It should improve your speeds about 25%.

Because SETI is a single threaded application, you'll never be able to use both of your CPUs to crunch the same work unit twice as fast.

However, you can crunch two at once. Just make two copies of the SETI@Home directory and launch both, letting each copy download and process WUs seperately. This will utilize both CPUs, effectively doubling the number of Work Units you process in a given number of real-world hours, but will not help your average time.

Re: Need help setting Seti...

Wait a minute!
are you telling me that 12 hours per WU for a dual 867 MHz G4 is "Average"?!!!

something has to be wrong with that, seriously!
I am not trying to be cocky here or anything, but that CAN NOT be right.

I am running one machine
a 450 B&W G3 with 896 MB of ram and X.2.3 and I average 12 -15 hours / WU with the GUI version for X
.... a few weeks ago I switched to the Darwin version and since then my time per WU has been cut to 8 - 10  ....2/3 my old average..... (presumeably because the seti app itself requires few system resources).

I do not mean to come across arguementive here or anything but I refuse to accept that a system that is 4 years newer than my machine is essentially just as fast (in reguards to seti wu's)..... I simply refuse
