As for pulling out now ... you know, the argument that "we have no choice" is pretty strange, when you think about it.

Imagine if you could go back in time to oh, say 1965, when the upper echelons of power really began to understand there was no way of winning in Vietnam short of World War III. They stayed in because they thought pulling out would cause a catastrophe.

But what if they'd had the balls to bite the bullet and pull out at that early stage? Think of all the destruction and mayhem that could've been avoided before they eventually had to pull out in humiliation anyway.

I think there's such a thing as cutting your losses. But then, that would require admitting you made a mistake, and that's next to impossible (especially for superpowers).
