speeding up a performa 6200

so, i read on lowendmac that the architecture of these things is messed up, like a 64 chip on a 32 bit bus or whatever...  how can i maximize the speed?  this thing runs a lot slower with 8.1 than my 630 with 7.6.1.  they both have 64 megs ram.  is it true that the cache is not upgradable (even though the chip comes right out)?  should i try loading 7.6.1 onto it?  maybe load the OS into a RAM disk?  (i'm only gonna be running a few apps, for web and ftp serving).  lemme hear some suggestions.

ALSO how can i use the video out port? (no, not the Video-in/TV slot... i have one of those already)  i assume the larger opening in the back panel is what goes with it...   i looked around and i cant find much info on it.

Re: speeding up a performa 6200

Well, a 6200 only runs at 75 MHz... *sigh*

8.1 is probably the best you're going to be able to do, although it will boot a lot slower. 7.6 is as old as I would go with a PPC - 7.5.x has a really lousy 68x code emulator. The newer you get after 7.6, you make a tradeoff. Older versions boot faster and use less RAM, while newer vesions tend to be a bit snappier since they've got more PPC native code.

Since you want to use the computer as a server, I'm going to recommend that you use 8.1, and clean the system folder out really good - like removing Quicktime & stuff. 8.1 lets you use HFS+, which you'll want if you have a hard drive bigger than 2 GB.

If 8.1 is being too pokey for you, I'd reccomend 7.6.1 (taking in dvpierce's considerations).  Heck, I haven't upped my 6200 (*shudder*) to anything about 7.5.1 (what it came with) - not counting that time it was running 8.5 (with 40mb RAM) for a while *double shudder*

Video out? Are you talking about the RCA in/out jacks?
