Re: Bikes

A little update:

My latest ride was with my girlfriend in Sioux Falls, SD while we were visiting her family.  One morning we set out on the bike path that goes all the way around the city and the halfway point is the waterfalls of Sioux Falls.  Really fun ride, and a really good amount of time on dirt and on pavement.  Definitely noticing benefits of having clipless.  Hills are getting easier and easier.  I'm learning how to change my pedalling to adjust to the power needed for hills.  Also noticing that I need to tighten my pedals so I don't come out of them as easily.  I started really loose so I could get in and out really easily, but now that's almost too loose.  In short, the ride was long (~30miles) but a lot of fun.

Re: Bikes

part of the looseness may be the pedals wearing in. i've noticed it when i buy new pedals. they always need to be re-adjusted fairly soon because of undue looseness.

Thanks swiss.  I'll get out there today and have a look at them.  The rotors have been getting a lot of mud on them so I'll definitely try giving them a cleaning.

Re: Bikes

How much does the Specialized Sirrus range cost in the US?

My current Trek is going to need loads of work and new parts soon - the mechanic at work was actually quite disgusted at the state of it - but will last another couple of months. Since i'm going to be in Miami for 6 months from January, I'm just wondering if it'll be cheaper for me to pick one up there and ship it back.

Buy now at UK prices, or wait 10 months and buy at US prices?

Re: Bikes

Well I fooled around with them a bit today.  I tightened up the cable on the front brake and adjusted the fixed pad a bit.  I was surprised at how much easier these things are to work on than crappy brakes on bikes I've had before.  I can't find any rubbing alcohol, so I'll have to try that later.  I've noticed that when I engage the brakes the rotor actually bends a bit in towards the wheel, is that okay or do I just need to do a better job of adjusting them?

The MSRP on the Sirrus and Sirrus Pro is 550 and 710 USD, respectively.  Wait til you get to the states and get a Kona instead.

Re: Bikes

Ha, went out for a quick bike ride today, and killed myself on the hills. I'm way outta shape. I'd commute for exercise, but I forgot my helmet at my summer job. D'oh!

I'll be getting it in the next couple of days though, so I hope to get used to cycling harder again. smile

Are they the 2005 or 2006 models?

The Sirrus '06 is £400 here, Sirrus Pro '06 is £1000. Because of the company I work for, I get to buy at trade prices, don't even have to pay tax, and we sell A LOT of specialized stuff so get very good rates - way less than half MSRP. So it's not cheap enough in the US to wait to get it there.

I hadn't thought about a Kona, but my company don't stock them so I wouldn't get the discount.

It's basically between a Ridgeback Genesis Day something, or a Specialized Sirrus something. Ridgebacks are better value on components, but are let down by the frame. Whereas the Sirrus has a stronger frame, but similar quality components cost more. But the Ridgeback frame is quaranteed for life so I can just get it replaced if there is ever a problem. But the Sirrus can take thicker tyres, and the Genesis can't.

Ah, decisions. I think i'll order them all in to the shop and ride them for a day then buy one.

A little bend is normal. It's the nature of mechanical disc brakes. Since only one of the pads moves, it has to push the rotor towards the fixed pad. Hydraulic disc brakes generally have pads move from each side so that the rotor does not have to move.

Those are some pretty sick bars. How's it feel riding on the tops where there's no bar tape?

Re: Bikes

odd at first, but i'm getting used to it. but i've only done about 100 miles since i put them on. i'm sure once i'm used to them i won't even notice. they have solved my shoulder/neck cramp issues, and because of the profile of the bars coming off the tops to the drops there's a nice flat spot behind the hoods that's real comfy...

Re: Bikes

I'm going on an adventure race tomorrow, it's east of Columbus I think. 2mi canoeing, 12mi mountain biking on a somewhat flat but twisty course, and an orienteering part. I can't wait! It's going to be in the low 40s and raining though...

Re: Bikes

I've been following behind in commuting, the weather has been a bit mean (freezing on some mornings). So I went out for an hour today and feel better.

Still haven't bought a new bike yet. http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/bignervousgrin.gif

Re: Bikes

I crashed kind of hard on my last ride.  Would have broken my hands if I wouldn't have been smart enough to tuck my arms in when I was going down.  I hit my abdomen on my handlebar though, which knocked the wind out of me, and I'm pretty sure I bruised a rib in the process.  I'm better now.  My bike didn't suffer any damage except for the saddle just needing to be tightened back down.  I have clipless so I was in my pedals for most of the fall and my saddle hit pretty hard against some rock on my fall, so it knocked it loose.  I want to go riding again, but most days the high is in the lower 50s now, and by the time that its 50 I'm either busy with something or I don't have time to go for a ride and then shower afterwards.  Grrr...

Anyway, other than the crash things are good in my biking world.  I just consider myself lucky for knowing how to fall.  Saved my hands, I'm sure of it, and probably a lot more in the end.  So my best advice in even my beginner/intermediate mountain-biking experience, is to tuck your arms in if you are going to fall.  Don't dare stick your hands out and try to catch yourself, you'll break stuff that you don't want to break.

Re: Bikes

wreck report:

Saturday afternoon, casual ride. out with my usual ride partner, on a road we both know well.

there's a big knot in the road where roots have pushed up a bulge about 7" tall and 2.5' around. normally, we just move to the center of the lane and go around. today (for some unknown reason), we moved to the center of the lane - and my riding partner grabbed his brakes. my front overlapped his rear, and before i could brake he moved back over. boom! i'm on the asphalt, and he's turning around to ask "are you o.k.?"

sure, idiot.

i crawl out of the road, and after collecting my feeble wits, get up to check my bike and my injuries. nothing bad on the bike, just some lightly torn/scuffed bar tape (fell on the left side, yay!). check myself, and i got a little road rash on my elbow (about 2x the size of a quarter), my shorts are a little beat up (glad i was wearing my ratty mtb baggies ), and i managed to get some road rash on my upper ankle. damfino. but the piece de resistance, somehow i managed to rack myself in the boys with the saddle horn. owie. helmet didn't even touch pavement, btw.

i wanted to finish our normal route, but my partner decided to turn back. "man, your elbow looks bad." so we did. on the plus side, still averaged 15.9 mph with a top speed of 22 mph.
