I've been following behind in commuting, the weather has been a bit mean (freezing on some mornings). So I went out for an hour today and feel better.
Still haven't bought a new bike yet. http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/max … usgrin.gif
Wuss.
Only freezing rain should be stopping you.

I lke it, but I like mine better
It might be the end of using my fixie for awhile
I don't think that it will handle well in the snow and slush. Well, at least I still have the mountain bike for that.

That "I <3 Mountains" sticker is sooo convincing.

Especially with that gear ratio.

my road rash is mostly healed...
Just don't pick at it. I scraped up my arm pretty good in May, and I've got a permanent scar from it now. It wouldn't have been so bad if I had left it alone. It also would have helped if it hadn't been on my elbow, where the skin is constantly stretching and compressing... not so good for healing.

I do ride it in the mountians! No tremoundous hills, but the catskill mountians are great stuff for it. Always using the brake up there though. My favorite place to ride. So I can safely say I really do love mountians.

Those 2.3" tires will work on your rims, but its profile will not be right. The tire will be much taller and rounder than intended. The use of a wider rim gives tires a wider and shorter profile, which leads to more contact with the ground and thus, more traction. Therefore, tires of the size you're considering are designed with this profile in mind. They should still work fine on your bike though; there certainly isn't anything dangerous about it.

Re: Bikes
gotta bump it up - 'cause i'm piecing together a new bike!
just ordered one of Nashbar's cyclocross frames and carbon cross forks. i've also already got (or ordered):
custom Chris King red/silver(white)/blue headset, FSA Gossamer (square-taper) cross crank, Shimano UN-72 BB, 12-25 9-speed 105 cassette, HG-93 chain, XTR M-952 rear mech, Campagnolo Centaur front mech, el-cheapo Nashbar stem...
haven't ordered brifters yet (need to decide on Xenon, Mirage or Veloce), or brakes (Avid Road Discs cost a mint!), or handlebars (Salsa Moto Ace Bell Lap), or pedals (may use some ca. 1991 Deore LX from the junk box), or wheels (going to have to be custom-built - 700c with mountain hubs), or saddle (Selle Italia Flite), or seatpost (whatever i can get cheap on eBay).
but it's coming together!
i'll post pics as i start assembling it.
going for a "Support our Troops" colour scheme, btw: black bike with red, white and blue headset and yellow bar tape (since another word for bar tape is "ribbon")...

because i'm not sold on the Surly mythos, among other things. they cost and weigh too much. and the Cross-Check doesn't have disc mounts. still nice bikes, and if anybody wants to give me an Instigator, i won't turn it down.
Surly - $400, 4.9 lb frame, 2.9 lb fork.
Nashbar - $300, 3.6 lb frame, unknown weight carbon fork (bet it's less than 4 lbs, though).
in a year or two, i'm kind of planning on swapping the frame for a Salsa Las Cruces, anyway.
