Do you believe in ghosts?

There are tons of ghost stories here in Okinawa.  The following are what I could find around the web, some were repeated with slight variations, so I'm not sure which is the most accurate.  I've yet to see anything "spooky", but I'm curious.  I'm not really into supernatural stuff, but if there really are ghosts, they would be here.  Just from the shear number of people that have died on this island in such a short amount of time.

I work in the bomb dump, and the locals that work out there with us absolutely will not go to certain places.  Two of the Japanese cops that work out there were driving by a small building that has no power or lights and they saw light coming from under the door.  Freaky.

Another one that I didn't find on the web but have heard is about an old CIA "interrogation" building that used to be out in the area.  It had been abandoned since the end of the war, and mostly forgotten about.  Some SPs (Air Force cops) were doing a daily security check at night on the area and when they drove by there were lights on inside the building.  There was no power or lights in the building for who knows how long.  Soon after, the building got torn down.

There is a road in the bomb dumb where a Japanese soldier was killed a long time ago.  When the Japanese cops drive through that area they turn the rear view mirror down.  It's because if you don't, you can see the dead guy sitting in your back seat.

.....Old Makiminato Gate 2.....

A US military base gate on Hwy 58 (rumored to be the old Makiminato gate 2) used to have a frequent visitor, a GI from WW11. Each Friday and Saturday night at the same time, a GI in full combat gear would approach the gate, which was manned by Marines. When he reached the gate guard, he had a cigarette in his hands and would ask, "Gotta light?" After the gate guard lit the cigarette, the GI would disappear into thin air. When this happened many times, Marines refused guard duty at this gate and it was finally closed. One theory about why the GI showed up every weekend is that sometimes when people die, their images are caught in a kind of time warp. A certain thing could trigger this record player so that an event the person did when they were alive is replayed. Some say if you go to the area where this gate used to be you can still see the GI ask for a light, even though the guard house is no longer there.

.....Old Makiminato Housing Area.....

In the Old Makimanato Housing area there were a few reports of people living on base near the large off base grade school. These reports had fully battle ready Japanese WWII soldiers showing up in odd places such as the back yard, the bedroom, the laundry room, the bathroom, etc. These reports had, in all accounts, these soldiers seeming to be very lost. I have been told that the small ravine running behind these houses was an ambush point where the Japanese soldiers would wait out American Soldiers working their way west along the creek bed below.

Okinawa Tunnel

There is a tunnel on Okinawa in which a car accident occured, killing a young man and woman. Rumor has it that the tunnel is haunted, but only by the ghost of the woman. An American named Jim got out of work late one night and decided to take the tunnel home because it was a shortcut. Jim's coworkers had warned him not to drive through the tunnel alone, but Jim was not superstitious. Jim drove his motorcycle through the tunnel and found it was badly lit. For the first few yards, it did not seem bad. But as he drove farther into the tunnel, the weight on his motorcycle suddenly started to feel heavier. Jim knew he had only a few small things in his backpack, but it felt like the weight on his motorcycle had doubled.

He looked into his rearview mirror, and to his surprise saw what appeared to be flowing, long, black hair blowing in the wind and a young woman's face, althought he could not quite see the face. Jim shrugged it off as an illusion because he was tired and it was so late. But the weight and image in the mirror did not go away. Jim became very impatient with whoever it was and finally said out loud, "What do you want?"
The answer was:
"I WANT YOU!!!"

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

I never seen a ghost personally(that I know of). I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I have lived in houses and felt like I was being watched or somebody was there. One year I was at my late grandfathers house sleeping in the basement. I was sleeping when I was awaken because I heard my name being called out in a loud whispering voice scared me so much I slept with the light on. Another incident I was trying to sleep when I saw a white light go across the basement wall. I don't think they were car lights just the way the basement windows are and you can hear if a car pulls into the driveway. Not very exciting but oh well.

I haven't. My house is only about 100 years though, but while several people have died here, I haven't seen them. Same thing with my cottage.

Not really.

Some of the noises the wind makes give the jeepers though.  I think there's enough in nature to be scared about without believing in ghosts.  tongue

Cool stories though.  smile

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

I have never seen evidence to affirm or deny existence of said phenomena.

Having said that, I will confess to leaning toward the liklihood of such existence.

Here in Austin, the Driskill Hotel is a well-known spookster hangout as well as several other locations.

http://www.lonestarspirits.org/locations/austin.html

One of these days, I'm gonna have to check out these places.  Though I've been to the Capitol a few times and have never seen any apparitions as reported. I've been to a few of the locations listed above and never seen anything odd, though I've never been in Spaghetti Whorehouse after closing. shrug

I did run into Matthew McConaughey at the Brown Bar once. But he's not a ghost yet. tongue

If I ever do see something, then I'll probably believe, though I'll still suspect some elaborate hoax in many cases. Though this: "'Suicide Bride #1' has been spotted in the balcony level ladies' room - peering under stalls."  would absolutely wig me out.  eek

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

When I used to live in Chicago there was a place called Bachelor's Grove Cemetery and it was one of the most haunted places in the country, I never did get a chance to see it...would of been one hell of a trip

Been living in Austin for about a year but haven't gotten a chance to see anything, maybe I'll check those places out Og...

I think for the most part it's fun to believe in this sort of stuff, at least to give you a good scare now and then  wink

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

given my religious and spiritual leanings (or rather, lack thereof) some might be surprised to hear me say that, yes, I tend to believe in ghosts.  but more in a "since the brain creates electric energy and fields during life, I bet something can be measured after death" kinda way rather than an "eternal soul yearning for eternal peace and coming up short" kinda way.

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

I ran across this link just now at another forum I visit: The fear of 'haunted' houses explained

I'm not using it as a defense or explanation as to why I don't believe in ghosts, I just thought it was interesting and relevant to the topic. And I think it shows the predisposition people have to attributing events to paranormal phenomena when they are otherwise unable to explain them through scientific means.

Heinlein used this technique in "The Day After Tomorrow" ("Sixth Column"). His protagonists employed subsonics to terrify the U.S. occupiers. The sounds instilled a feeling of dread and terror. That was written in 1949

:: shines flashlight on face ::

They tell this story about an old MacAddict forum poster, he used to come here in the early days of the MacAddict forums. He was a total die hard MacAddict, lived and breathed Macs. On his 18th birthday, right before he was to leave home for college, his misunderstanding parents bought him a PC as his present. That night he killed himself in despair. His parents found him in his room at his desk, staring at the PC. He had set the Windows screensaver to scroll "I wish I were a Mac" across the monitor. And every year on the anniversary of his death he posts to these forums.
