For some odd reason, that put me in mind of being awakened unexpectedly by a St. Bernard who is happy to see me.   tongue

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

OK, oatmeal. I'll play.

I never seen a ghost personally(that I know of). I'm sure I'm not the only one, but I have lived in houses and felt like I was being watched or somebody was there. One year I was at my late grandfathers house sleeping in the basement. I was sleeping when I was awaken because I heard my name being called out in a loud whispering voice scared me so much I slept with the light on. Another incident I was trying to sleep when I saw a white light go across the basement wall. I don't think they were car lights just the way the basement windows are and you can hear if a car pulls into the driveway. Not very exciting but oh well.

All of this is easily explainable. Hearing a car pulling into the driveway, you simply heard a car down on the street. I used to hear stuff like that all the time. Sound acts funny, and it can be hard to tell where it's coming from occasionally. The other stuff all starts with "I was sleeping when..." or "I was trying to sleep when...." It's much more likely that you were still dreaming, or in a dream-like state, than you were seeing or hearing the spirits of the undead.

A long winded story

Oat, as for your story, either you are lying to impress everybody on the forum with your "better than everyone else's" ghost story, or you had a delusion brought on by the idea that was already implanted into your head by your friend's stories and the scary movies you were watching. I'm guessing that you have embellished an actual story, i.e., you saw something (a light from outside) and have either consciously turned it into a ghost story that you can impress people with, or have subconsciously twisted it to fit the "facts" that you had been presented with about the house being haunted.

Or, you're just out and out lying.

Why don't you just come out and call me a liar?

Or, you're just out and out lying.

Oh.  You did.   lol

I haven't embellished a word or twisted a fact.  I'm describing exactly what I saw, and what I felt.

You still haven't answered my two questions.

1) Why are you so dead-set against the possibility that ghosts exist.
2) Do you believe in an afterlife?

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

1) Why are you so dead-set against the possibility that ghosts exist.

Because there are much more reasonable explanations for "ghosts" or "hauntings," and I have yet to hear of a situation where there isn't one. Same applies for UFOs, Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

2) Do you believe in an afterlife?

Ah, the classic trap. If I do believe in an afterlife, I'm a hypocrite, but if I don't, I'm an atheist and my opinion can be dismissed as cynical tripe. I'm not going to answer this one, because I don't see how it is relevant to the discussion beyond your little trap.

By the way, I left open the possibility that you're not lying and just delusional.

Ok...  You won't give the alternate viewpoint the time of day, and you won't participate in the discussion in any way other than to announce "you're full of it" to the people who believe other than what you believe.  I think I begin to see what your reasons for posting here in this thread are...

I disagree with you, therefore, I'm a troll.

Wow, you sure showed me! Damn, have I ever been showed. Showed, that's what I was! Showed! And those little pictures! Man, they just drove home the whole showing part! I mean, whew, not just one little http://homepage.mac.com/theconfuzed1/.Pictures/smilies/troll.gif dude, but three. I mean, wow! Plus, the radar thing just really rounds it out. Great argument!

And I love the fact that the only evidence you've presented to back up the existence of ghosts is "I saw one." Wait...come to think of it, there is no objective way of telling where a ghost is or isn't! How convenient for the believers! I mean, you an make an outrageous claim, and never really have to back it up! By that logic, there's more "proof" of the Easter Bunny, because at least he leaves candy behind.

You were probably sleeping or half asleep. There's a gray area between the two where reality and dreams sort of get confused. You can dream that you hear something and think it's real.

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?

"Do you believe in ghosts?" asks the thread.
"No," said you.  Then you proceeded to trash other people's beliefs.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because there is no proof that they exist," said you.  Then you continued to trash other people's beliefs.

I disagree with you, therefore, I'm a troll.

No, you're a troll because

You won't give the alternate viewpoint the time of day, and you won't participate in the discussion in any way other than to announce "you're full of it" to the people who believe other than what you believe.

There are a lot of people in here whose minds are opened to the possibility that just because they can't explain a thing does not necessarialy follow that it can not exist.  Some of those people have chosen to share experiences that they have no way to explain, and you have come in here to call them liars and tell us all that we are full of it.

You seem to have taken this discussion quite personally for someone who doesn't believe in them.

Oh, this is getting fun.

I've given the opposite point of view the time of day. I've taken a scientific look at it as best as I can. Let's take your example. You say that you saw something. Very good. Now, did you gather any other evidence besides your own perceptions, such as a photograph? No. Did you have an eyewitness? No. Is there any way to show that what you said is what you said it is? No, we'd have to take your word for it.

Now, considering that you have already confessed to believing in ghosts, that leaves your judgment in this questionable. Not because I think you're loony or anything, but because you come to it with a preconceived notion, so you are more likely to interpret your own observation through that filter. You see a strange light or something in a room, and it becomes a ghost. You exclude the possibility that it could be lights from a passing car or something else. No, it's a ghost to you, even though there is no other evidence to support that.

Two quotes for you, one short, the other long. The first is a paraphrase of a statement attributed to Carl Sagan: It's important to keep an open mind, but not so open that your brain falls out.

The second I'll link to, since it's quite long. I suggest you read it. Here

Slarty!!! Why must you always be toeing the line of being banned!? For booboo's sakes, disagreeing with oatmeal! It's like saying that Macs are slow!!! You TROLL!

No one is saying that disagreeing with me makes him a troll.  However, coming into a thread about ghosts and calling people liars when they say they've seen one is very troll-like.

I concede that he has a contrary viewpoint.  I concede that his viewpoint has merit.  He has been something of an ass while making his viewpoint known, and it wasn't called for.

I've told my story.  I'm sticking by it - I like to think that I know the difference between light on the wall and a figure a foot from the end of my nose.

It is, I suppose, possible that it was light from a passing car.  Mind you, this house was at the end of a dirt road in the middle of the black dirt farms in Orange County New York, but it is possible.  It's possible that swamp gas refracted the light from Venus.  It's possible that I saw and felt what I described.

You don't believe my description of what I saw? Fine.  Don't go calling me a liar with nothing more than "I don't believe you" as your backup.

So Oatmeal what sort of drugs were you on when you "saw" or "heard" your ghost? I just want to verify that they were the same ones I took since we are both delusional.
