Help! I'm a clueless Net Ninny

Here goes:

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X networked with the Built-In Ethernet to two Windows (sorry!) systems.  I have no problem accessing the internet on this network and got that figured out, but I'm having a bugger of a time "seeing" my Windows systems or connecting to my precious PB from my Windows system.  Here is what I have done so far:

In System Preferences, under "Personal" I have "My Account" set up with no password.

Under "Internet & Network" then "Network" I have TCP/IP configured using DHCP and it shows my IP address.  I have tried checking/unchecking "Make AppleTalk active" in hopes that would do the trick but it doesn't make a difference.  BTW ..... I don't even understand what "AppleTalk" is!

Under "Sharing" I have all the services checked.  When I click the "Windows File Sharing", a message states the IP address I can connect from Windows through, but when I click "Start/Run (in Windows) and type in the address, it prompts me for a password.  I don't have any passwords set up!  Argh!

Finally, under "System", I've created two other Accounts (to correspond with the other two Windows systems.)

I'm really at a loss and feeling helpless.  I've figured a lot of this out on my own, but am at a point of feeling very clueless!  I don't even have an inkling how to "see" my Windows systems through OS X.

I'd appreciate any advice you guys could offer.  Feel free to laugh, too!   big_smile

Actually it sounds like you've done quite well just fiddling with your settings.  Windoze uses a different peer to peer communication protocol.  AppleTalk is the Apple way of doing peer to peer.  However if you're not talking to any Macs, just turn it off as its useless to you.  Doing so will free up precious CPU cycles.  Here's some things for you to read:

Re: Help! I'm a clueless Net Ninny

Thanks for the link - that has been helpful.

I am making headway, but encountering a new problem.  When I click "Connect to Server" and type in the correct smb://XXXXX stuff, a dialog box appears with my Windows workgroup/username/password.  I have tried EVERYTHING to get it to connect, but keep getting an error #-5023 or -36, which means "User is not authorized" or that I don't have my PC set up right.  I have no passwords set up on my windows system and have turned off my firewall.

Does anyone have an inkling what I'm missing here?  I appreciate all the help!  smile

I think i gotthe -5023 error when my windows file sharing wasn't set up right and the -36 when I was loggin' in correctly.  Make sure your actually sharing stuff in windows and using the correct user/passwords when trying to log into windows from your Mac.

Well - I'm making progress.

I can access my XP system beautifully from my Mac and vice versa!  smile  It is my Windows ME system that I'm having problems with (and am starting to think it is ME!)  I'm a happy camper though - it is so cool to be able to network XP and my new Mac!

Thanks to you both.  smile
