DSL vs Cable.

Ok, ok. So most people only have access to cable or dsl. If I was stuck with one of those I would get dsl. Sure 40 bucks a month is exspensive, but 640k DSl would be the choice. With ana verage download speed of over 500k per second, it is farely fast. Now for me, I have fiber optics at home. I get an average download speed, depending ont he server, of around 5 mb per second. I have gotten a peak of 25 mb per second from my ISPs server. We are very lucky here in Moses Lake, WA, to have access to such futuristic technology. I say futuristic as this is one of the only places in the US, that I am aware of, that the public has access to such high speed, stable, networking technology. If you want more info on fiber optics, just ask. Perhaps Mac Addict could do an article in an upcoming magazine on it. My unlimited access with it, costs me 25 bucks aa month, and that is with 3 lines. I pay 80 bucks a month to access the internet and tv over it. yes that's right tv. That is way before it's time, I will admit. But tv over the internet is nice. Now it does take a lot of bandwidth to support high definition, well that is where the fiber comes in. With practically unlimited bandwidth available. The theory is that single mode fiber optics is capable of transmiting 1 terabyte per second. And my friends and fellow nerds, they have hit 10 Gigabytes persecond. So they aren't far off. Email or post reply for more email.

Re: DSL vs Cable.

Could you post a link to the ISPs site...I'm interested...this doesn't sound even vaugly possible: tv over the internet?  I think some facts may be mixed up, but I could be totally wrong.  I just want to see the facts written down somewhere.

Re: DSL vs Cable.

Well, that's all neat and I sure do envy you!

It's been about 3 years since Cable was introduced here, with DSL about a 1.5 years after that. We got Cable because we are to far for proper bandwidth of DSL!  whaa
I live in the bedroom community of Vermonts largest city, a town that is now the shopping capital of the state. Directly next to those box stores are a row of appartments that went in last year, and they don't even have cable TV!  eek On every unit there is one of those mini SAT dishes! confused

Want technology in Vermont? 2 words.... User Density! evil

Re: DSL vs Cable.

I was working in Bristol, VA this summer and they were doing a similar thing.  The city had started providing its patrons with phone, tv, and internet access all over one fiber optic line for a really reasonable price.  it looked like a really nice service and tons of people were switching over to it.  The only alternative was cable tv and cable internet from a cable company.  Can't remember which one but i think it was charter or adelphia.  Anyways the cable company held a monopoly in the area so the city started up this service and provided a little competition. wink  As for me i have a t1 line right now at my university.

Re: DSL vs Cable.

Well I can see that 2 people have come in and sad they have a T1. Well t1s are nice, can be comparable to fiber optics. But fiber is said to be the world's second fastest internet connection. Well it is capable of it. The OHC-10 as I believe it is called is just a bunch of fiber lines strung together. I like the fiber as it is hardly ever down. The only thing that scares me is the people that run it. I will tell you this. It is ut in by the Grant County PUD or public utility district which is our power company. Their people are kinda stupid. With only 2 people that know more than I do about networking. it is sad. I say that reluctantly as it may not be 100% rue, and God I hope it is not true. Phoen is not offered yet, but when it is it will include unlimited calling, free longs distance, up to 3 phone lines/numbers, free long distance to all 50 states, canda, mexico, south america, Europe and Japan. That is what I have been told. I willb e upgrading to a new Powerbook or dual G5 in a couple days, then this iMac G3 goes server. And my web pages will be hosted on it, free with unlimited upload/download woo hoo. No more 10 buck a month charges per domain. Well ti is fun talking about this but I must go, as I am expecting my friend to call. College starts for me tomorrow, A+ preperation class, and Cisco semester 1. And God darned Algebra  hate it. Well peace all. Postmore replys. up  bang   <that is becasue my pc server has another virus, totalling 16 now. Due for another reformat. I amt hinkin Linuz this time. Damn useless pcs. I wanna kill Windows!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr

Re: DSL vs Cable.

Four months ago alls I could get was 36.6k dial up. Why do they call modems 56k? Cna they even connect at 56k? I ahve never seen it done? have you? Although I did se 51k when I moved to my new place before I got the fiber hooked up. Lots of people in my town can still only get dial up. And it is hellish slow. Cable is run by the Cable company. They still insist that cable modem is better and faster than fiber optics or DSL, morons. cry  I pitty the retards there. DSL is only offered by the phone company. 40 bucks for 640K running at around 500k per second. They seem smarter than the cable company, better priced, yet dumb. They think u can get around 7 mb per second on the 640k line, haha dumb asses. And this whole thing about cable being better than fiber, well I tell you this, wehn they told me that I walked outta the store with out saying anything but ok and  bang  on the roof of my car. And then the anti freeze started pooling underneath it. I wa skinda pissed by now. But I left. 250 bucks to fiz my damn car. Actually my dads car. Parents paid for it as theyI am only 18 now hehe. Anyways.  The sad thing about my town is the morons and retards that run things here. YEt no one will hire me as I am student still. I don't know or understand how some of these people get their certifications. Any idea? Fill me in man!!!!! evil  mad  twisted
