powerbook g3 and pcmcia slot
hello!
it's a sad story of betrayal at the hands of apple store employees.
i own a 1999 powerbook g3 lombard/bronze keyboard USB. i was running os 9.2 when i purchased a firewire cd burner. i also bought a firewire card to put in my pcmcia slot to allow me to use the firewire burner. i was assured that this would function in os 10.2.
so i upgraded. and now the only way to use the firewire burner is to reboot into os 9.2. i checked with the firewire card manufacturer and they do not support os 10.2.
secondly, i had hoped to use the firewire burner as a general cd reader as well since my cdrom drive in my powerbook is failing. (sadly, it can't even read burned discs. this is another problem that is escalating.)
any suggestions on what i can do?
(i tried telling apple about my experiences at the apple store and they could not help. i will never shop there again.)
thank you in advance.

Re: powerbook g3 and pcmcia slot
Why didn't you bring back all of the materials and return them? They promised you something which turned out to be false....
I'm assuming that there was a small amount of time between the date of purchase and the discovery of OS X in-compliance?
I don't know of any PCMCIA cards that are OS X compliant (but thats just because I'm ignorant...not because there arent any...) and I am actaully looking for one for a SCSI adapter that will work in OS X.
Bottom line is, the Apple store should take the stuff back. Then you could go another route (perhaps a USB burner...slower I know...but it'll work)

Re: powerbook g3 and pcmcia slot
thanks for the reply!
the apple store would not take the items back because the items were not defective. it was my word against the employees word which didn't seem to matter much. (the manager is very difficult to talk with.) they suggested i sell my powerbook and buy a new one. gosh, why didn't i think of that?! i can sell on ebay i suppose.
is a usb burner too slow?

Re: powerbook g3 and pcmcia slot
Well...that depends on your definition of "slow"
Seriously, there are some folks who, if it's not instantaneous, think it's crawling. Others don't mind so much. So maybe a USB burner is a stop-gap until you can gather the finances for the TiBook.
If you have the finances to support getting a new machine, this would be a great excuse...er...reason to do so. Sell it on ebay, give a friend a deal (and if they're a windoze user...all the better...
), I even saw one posting where a guy had reccomended taking an older powerbook and using it as a wall mounted MP3 player with iTunes......
But i digress....
Just do what feels right, and doesn't necessarily bankrupt you in the process.
And after you get the burner, you can make several CD's of really bad music to give to the jerk-o Apple store manager/sales dweeb as an offering of ill-will....

Re: powerbook g3 and pcmcia slot
I have a Wallstreet, with 10.2.3 installed, and am using a firewire PCMCIA card by Keyspan. With the Keyspan card, I have been able to capture footage from my Canon GL2, and Canon EOS 30 digital camera. My son has a Sony TVR27, that does not work with the above combination.
I've noticed the firewire card works with some devices, and not others. I have an external cd/r firewire drive that I cannot use with the card, not sure why.
When I installed the Keyspan card I did have 9.2 on the machine, but I've removed all vestiges of 9.2 from the Wallstreet. It is now a totall X machine, and the Keyspan card does work.
It works with some things, and not with others.
The only thing I do right is make misteaks.
