Internet Explorer Requires Connection to Server?

Hi All,

For some bizarre reason Internet Explorer requires connection to another Mac in order to start-up.  It will start-up anyway if I don't connect to the other Mac, however, if this other Mac is offline then it waits about 40 seconds before it launches IE.

The interesting thing about this is in the IE preferences under the option "Receiving files" and "File Helpers", everytime I click this option it is then it request to connect to the other Mac.... no other IE preference option requests this.

Does anyone have any idea what on earth I do to stop this?  I've removed IE and reinstalled it and have also removed the old IE preferences from the System Folder, but to no avail.

It seems that it is something to do with the File Helpers in IE... however, if you go to the menus "Apple", "Control Panels" and "File Exchange" it does not ask to connect to the other Mac....

Any help?  I'm pulling my hair out... sad

Thanks,

Kevin

Re: Internet Explorer Requires Connection to Server?

When you checked the Preferences foldder, did you also take a look in the "MS Prefernce Panels" in the System Folder?  That's where "File Helpers" are stored.  I'd try replacing that file first.  It sounds like a couple of your helper apps where aliased from the other Mac instead of copied.

Sounds like an alias issue to me.
Your boot machine is clearly "looking elsewhere". Had this issue on our LAn here with filemaker and appleworks documents on the server side. Client machines try to connect and typically freeze.

I'm not sure if you are able to run a Sherlock search on your Hard Drive for the type "alias"...then you could pick through and nuke ones that might seem pertinenet to your current malfunction(s).

Actually, the best product that comes to mind for what your describing would be Spring Cleaning made by Alladin Sys.  There is a function devoted to finding bad or redundant aliases that would be perfect for what you're suggesting.  If youhave trouble finding the website, Alladin Sys. are also the ones that brought us Stuffit Deluxe.  You should be able to find thelink bundled with it.
