Big price drop. (sub 1000$ iBooks?)

I was just going to ask users here a question along this line. Although I did not see the keynote and Apple.com is being bombarded now, I can say one thing.

Why buy an iBook now? Wow I need to see the NEW powerbook but it's an iBook in disguise  hey what did you do to my little white friend!

Either way this can be bad, but why not introduce a G4 ibook. I think the little whote laptops are history NOW See ya!

any how I cant realy say more than that since I am eagerly waiting to see the rest as I get timne today.

Interesting.  People used to say that the iBooks were eating into the sales of the Tibook.  Looks like AluTi is here to reverse all that.  I, for one, would DEFINITELY buy the 12" Powerbook if I were in the market for a "low" cost notebook.  It's got some nice power.  I paid a few hundred less for my 600Mhz iBook Nov. 2001.  I'm just going to keep saving until I hit that $3500 mark.  By then, the AluTiBooks will be revamped yet again (and possibly again ).
This really ought to shut up PC trolls who boast about their 2.4 P4 M laptops, which power down to 200Mhz when they get too hot. 

I need to add to this.  This really was what Apple needed to get folks' minds off the 970 chip.  We're all moderately sure that the 970 chip will hit PowerMacs first and filter their way down.  We're probably looking at at least a year - maybe a year and a half, but then again, Powerbooks just saw an update in about 3 months time.  I'm excited and I can't afford shiite.  Damn!

I just got my 12 inch iBook last month and now I'm itching for that 12 inch Powerbook. That was a rotten thing to do Apple! I doubt I could return my iBook now... sigh, any suggestions? I've only had it like 3 weeks!

Unless you are about to die Never buy a new machine that close to MacWorld. I speak from experience....I bought my dual500 in December 2000....DOH!

Yeah, but I never expected a 12" Powerbook, and since I wanted a small portable Apple I figured the recent iBook update was the perfect time to buy since the iBook line would stay in the same. I guessed wrong... sigh. $400 more for a G4 867 over a G3 800 is such amazing. I'm a little upset but I'll survive. For my purposes the G3 is adequate but like everyone else, I want the best avaliable. Maybe I can justify a second laptop.   

Isn't it always the case that 6 months later something better comes along?  My guess is, a new computer will be new for 6-9 months, tops.  Probably more like 3-4 months.

I bought a TiBook 3 weeks ago.  I'm not dissapointed.  I was at first when they announced the new books, but after a little more research, I'm very happy with what I have.   Granted, I would be bummed had I gotten an iBook, but that's just the nature of the industry, it always has been.  It is quite the shocker however, considering how recently the 'books were upgraded.

As for the new chips on the horizon, no biggie.  The G4 is on nearly every machine now, it will be supported for years to come.  The G3 OTOH, that's a risky buy in my book.

True, but when you're talking about a whole line of chips like a G4, those have been used for years now and many are not obsolete... I'm just saying I'd be kicking myself if I bought a G4 now and the G5 came along in July and I knew that it might be coming..

The G5 will first be released for desktop Macs, then later for laptops.  You're looking at waiting at least a year for laptop availability.  Knowing Motorola, they'll be behind schedule even for the desktops, and they won't be shipping come MWNY.

after reading all the reports about the new g3's which are over 1ghz the ibook has a lot of life left in it....

g4 clock speeds are still holding them back.

Why didnt they just call the 12" powerbook, "the new iBook"  I think it's more similar to the ibook than to the powerbook.

Probably because it would be too close specwise to the low end 15" TiBook. I mean, they are basically identical except for the screen size and built-in BlueTooth/Airport Extreme support in the 12".

Actually, according to the Apple spec page, there are several differences between the 12 and the 15:

No L3 cache in the 12
No Gigabit ethernet in the 12
No PC card slot in the 12
No ADC or DVI output in the 12
Maximum of 640 MB of RAM in the 12

It really is a lot like an iBook. But it's $500 more than the 12" iBook 800. For students on a budget, I think there's still plenty of life left for the 12" iBook.

And for those of us who find the 12" screen too small, the new 12" Powerbook won't be much help. Luckily, Apple just reduced the price on the 14" iBook to $1499. That's why I wait for Macworld before I buy.

The only thing that might shut up PC trolls is if M$ and Dell went under. Even then my guess is they would still come here and say that Macs sucks. very nice point on the P4 M, that's a peace of smurf. but it runs at 2.4 GHz so they are happy with it.
