Every NES emulator sucks.
Well, they do. Got a top-notch SNES emulator in SNES9X, and a pretty good Game Boy emulator in VisualBoy Advance, but all of the NES emulators just suck. I want to play some NES games, and I don't want to get the old NES out and hook it up to the TeeVee because I don't really have room for it.
Stupid stupid stupid.

I did some work on the NES component of MESS, and for some time I thought it was pretty good (it's gone to crap with architectural changes to MESS in the past two years and needs some updating).
Anyway, what about the current crop makes them suck?

Re: Every NES emulator sucks.
I did almost have luck with MESS recently...the speed seemed good, and the sound was there, but two things on that one a) no gamepad support and b) it crashed and freaked out while switching resolutions and color depth a lot.
iNES support has dropped off, and it doesn't run natively in OS X.
RockNES is the best of the current ones but has no gamepad support unless I shell out for Emulator Enhancer. I'm not keen on paying money just to have the functionality of the old NES sitting in the closet. For that money, I'd rather just drag the NES out and hook it up instead.
FakeNES...is just a busted up piece of junk that crashes too often and just doesn't work well or run well.
I guess I can't beg, since they're all freeware type projects, but still...it would be nice to have one that performs reasonably well, is stable enough to play for a few minutes, and works with a gamepad.

Re: Every NES emulator sucks.
I just wanted to revisit this, because RockNES was updated earlier this week.
It was a worthless update, too. It crashes more often (I can't even play Castlevania 3 anymore), feels slower, and still doesn't have gamepad support unless I shell out $25 for Emulator Enhancer. I know it's free, and I know developers have to support themselves, but a console emulator is worthless without gamepad support.
Ugh...

No, that's not it. Life is pretty darn spiffy for the most part. It's just the NES emulators that suck.

I just set up our old NES in the living room...it's amazing how 20 years later, it's still just as fun. I fixed the blinking screen to by ordering a new connector and cleaning the 72 pin connector plug dealio.

Re: Every NES emulator sucks.
Three years later, did you ever find a worthwhile NES emulator? I'm still looking.
