the end?
This looks like the end for iBooks
. I mean, with the 12'' PB out thats smaller than ibook, its the ultra portable, mini workhouse
. I cannot see Apple upgrading to G4. I personally think the 12" pb is totally AWESOME. If I had 2grand thats the first thing I'd buy.
...and dont quote me on that.

Re: the end?
The iBook still has an important place because of its price. $1799 is probably too expensive for many students, so the $999 or $1299 iBooks still have an advantage for people who want to save money.
For me, the 12" was simply too small. Fortunately, a side-effect of the new Powerbook intro is that Apple lowered the price of the 14" iBook by $100 to $1499.
I don't know if they'll ever put a G4 into the iBook. But until the Powerbook falls in price to the sub-$1000 range (if it ever does), the iBooks will probably still be around.

Re: the end?
Yeah, you know, it's actually kind of funny. A year or two ago, people were afraid the iBooks were stealing business from Powerbooks, and now it's the other way around! That 12" Powerbook ... ooo baby they look amazing!
You're right, it kind of makes me wonder why they even bother making iBooks anymore. But on the other hand, the entry-level models are still hundreds cheaper, right?
Steve Jobs said Apple is hoping to push people away from desktops and toward laptops, so presumably the iBook is gonna be positioned to attract to potential iMac customers, right?
So this year I'm thinking we'll finally go G4. Either that, or a super-fast G3 -- well over 1gz, one would think (or hope).
Not to worry, we'll still be alive and kicking for the forseeable future!!

Re: the end?
G3 has gotten the squirrel poop used out of it.
I think we are gonna be seeing Power Books lose a few hundred sooner or later and the ibook will suffer. Atleast until the G5, and ibooks get the 4
. It just won't be worth it to buy the G3.
...and dont quote me on that.

Re: the end?
The new powerbook is an ibook in disguise.
Hey what did you do to my little white friend...
I think they will either be gone, or a new Proc is going to be put in the Powerbook Soon. As far as price I always mentioned that Apple prices are high for some things, and for students budgets $1799.00 is alot of money, when you can get ibook for $1299.00 or less.
oh well it's time to wait and see again.

Re: the end?
Students won't pay $1799 for the iBook. They'll pay as low as $1499 depending on the discount structure of their School computer stores.

I guess I am the exception. You are looking at one student who just ordered the 12 inch pb.
Of course it helps that my wife is a Pharmacist.

PS...Besides the new proc...this is just an upgraded ibook. Heck, the form factor is even the same..

Re: the end?
With the magnesium frame and the composite casing, the iBook is more sturdy than the TiBook. Titanium doesn't break, my friends; but it's made to bend. I don't want my laptop bending at all; I hear that that's been a problem on some TiBooks, at airports going through the Xray scanner, for example.
No, I don't think that iBooks are going anywhere anytime soon.

I think you are right, but the new PowerBook is *smaller* than the iBook, and has a few other goodies stuffed in it. But it really is not a full blown PowerBook either...
