Best Anti-virus software
In your opinions what is the best anti-virus software. Today I asked this graphic designer on what is the best anti-virus. When I mentioned Nortan, I could tell by the look on his face that he didn't like it. He said the software always causes problems. So he said that on his home computer he has Virex.
Any recommendations?

Re: Best Anti-virus software
when was the last time anyone even heard of a virus for the mac?
There was an evil applescript for 10.1 and Safari 1.0. You have to have both of these and you have to restart your computer. It is just a spammer.

Re: Best Anti-virus software
I did some research the other day on this.
There are no true viruses for OS X.
There are a few scripts and Macros that can mess stuff up, but alot of those macros are for MS Word...

No ones really had the time to make one to affect not many comps...as there are a lot of people using PCs so..programmers tend to make viruses for that. And there was a virus for mac a while back..but internet was lacking back then so..didn't affect much..meh.no virus for OSX thou..

Yeah I know how i would make one, course it would rely on the gullibility of the user with his security blanket of mac os x (all this no viruses propaganda) to get the admin password.
I swear people using mac os x don't protect themselves enough.

So come on, Macademicians.. anybody with info or experience with cruddy MS macros.. it sucks copying and pasting all my papers into emails when I could be sending .doc files to easily edit them..
Oh quick question.. does anybody know if .doc files created in TextEdit become infected? Or is the only method of infection through MS Word?

Re: Best Anti-virus software
For M$ Word and Excel macro viruses or "trogan horses" use either Norton Antivirus (NAV) or Virex to clean them out. However, the thing about macro viruses is that they change constantly. So if you're in an environment where you keep getting Word or Excel viruses, then you need to keep the NAV or Virex definitions current at least monthly. The other thing to do is scan individual files before opening them. To be extra cautious, down load to a removeable disk/volume/media first (quarantine) and scan them there before saving to your hard drive. You can also set Word and Excel to disable all macros by default.
One comment about NAV. I would limit the installation to ONLY NAV and not all the system checking stuff. I can't count the number of posts that blame problems on all the other Norton stuff.

Good question! Don't know. I would suspect that on a PC using WordPad a macro could be passed along but would not execute. On a Mac, cut/paste into textEdit...I would thing you'd drop macros alone with the formating, but I really don't know...

There you go!
Probably the best solution. I asked my local IS guru about the text editor question and this was his response:
Yes, if you just copy/paste the text that should strip out the virus. Unfortunately, many of the macro virus writers thought of that. They can disable copy/paste, or re-define the copy/paste routines to propagate the virus as well. I think you had the right answer. Disinfect the original
Gotta love M$!
