Which M$ App is next to die?
Address Book, iCal, and iSync killed Entourage. Well, I think they did anyway. Looks like PowerPoint is dead. Once Safari's out of Beta, buh-bye Explorer. Is it even worth going after Word and Excel?

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
If Apple would start pushing Appleworks again you could easly say bye bye to Word and Excel.
Mail, Address Book, iCal, and iSync - Entourage
Keynotes - PowerPoint
Safari - IE
AppleWorks - Word and Excel
iChat - MSN Messenger (well kind of)
Quicktime - Mediaplayer (again kind of)

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
All MS apps are already dead. There is not a single MS app that is necessary, or indeed worthwhile, on Mac (or even Windows).
Well, at least you didn't call it "M$."

Sorry to say but I still use Word.
I can't wait until AppleWorks can replace Word and Excel.
Oh, happy note:
I am getting Keynote so good bye Power Point!

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
Ummmmm..... I may not like Microsoft, but I don't want MS apps for Mac to die for two reasons:
1. I don't want everything I use to be Apple branded; I don't trust Apple THAT much.
2. I've got, and will continue to have LOTS of Windows-using clients and colleagues. I translated files for years, and I don't miss it one bit.
Like it or not, Office is the productivity suite standard. It ain't going to change in the near future. Macs can either play well with others, or not. Losing Office would be bad for the platform. Simple.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
But you got to admit that PowerPoint is pretty bad.
Word is okay, they need to fix a lot of bugs but it is okay.
I don't have much experience with Excel.
I am very happy to see IE go.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
I uses Apple works for all my M$ Word and Excel documents and I have never run into any problems transfering them back and forth with Windows users.
I also have a copy of Open Office on my Mac which is also very cool and from what I have seen in my area is quickly replaceing Office.
I also love the fact that when ever I walk into a Circuit city or Best Buy in my town none of them have M$ Works, Word or Office Pre-installed, insted there all useing Wordperfect Office or Star Office

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
Is Apple already woking on up grading "AppleWorks"
Check out this link from keynote and notice the "chart data editor". Is this from Appleworks? Free Office? It is not EXCEL
http://www.apple.com/keynote/charts.html
I hope the MAC never loses Office. I only use Excel and NOTHING even come close to this program. One of the best M$ can do.
With Keynote I would like to know how big the file presentation is compaired to PP. I will get keynote and then I won't have to use Canvas for presenations.
On the box it said " <BR>Requires Windows '95 <BR>or better", so <BR> I bought<BR>a Macintosh

Apple has had -4% growth in 3 years, Microsoft has had +18% growth. I'd say Office Mac is far from dead, because the computing industry revolves around business, not Apple fanboys.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
I agree, Office for the Mac is a good thing, but I would still like to see Apple come up with a good Works suite.
I do however think Safari will eventually become a real competitor against IE. I think it has already. Ogrady's PowerPage showed 17% of all browswers to their page for one day was Safari. Again, not a great judge because it's a Mac page and it's only one day after the browser was released.
500000 Downloads in 3 days though, that's nice, and Apple has updated it already. I think it's going to take a big bite out of MS marketshare for Mac Browsing and that MS will eventually stop making explorer for the Mac.
On a side note, David Hyatt, one of the programmers for an opensource portion of safari is posting a weblog about the development of the application. Kind of an interesting read.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
Thanks for that wicked link ... Apple has called there browser Safari ... this sounds like more of a code name for the beta so any ideas to what Apple might call full version 1.0 ?
Will it change at all ????
I rekon that Apple should release Safari on the windows world ... it would take it by storm !
Also, I have heard alolt recently about Apple releasing its second attempt at a browser ... What was this first browser ? I was not very up with the play in the mid 90's so what was it? A link page about it would be cool.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
MS has already stopped making IE for Mac. they said they were only doing one version and that the only updates would be bug fixes and that's it.
next, you can do spreadsheets in Keynote already. how you think they got those graphs and stuff? so in my mind, Excel is already dead, and why do you need word? you can just use TextEdit. or if you neally need, OpenOffice.
there are no Microsoft apps for Mac that are needed, or even desired, except for maybe some of the games (such as HALO and MechWarrior)

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
Apple has had -4% growth in 3 years, Microsoft has had +18% growth. I'd say Office Mac is far from dead, because the computing industry revolves around business, not Apple fanboys.
Again, look at this year by year instead of giving three year averages that effectively hide data. I work in stats, day in and day out. Averages are the worst way to look at large data sets, or even small ones. Your three year numbers are at best worthless, and at worst misrepresentative.
I'd also argue that Word and Excel have no real competition on the Mac. They are bloated and suffer from the worst feature creep in the history of software, but they are used in every business I have come in contact with, and actually work quite well.
I use a lot of the functionality of Excel, which just isn't available in other apps. I can get by on simple word processors though, but occasionally I need something that just has no equivalent, leading me back to Word.
Thei apps are pretty good, and shouldn't be lightly dismissed.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
The other apple browser was OpenDoc was it not? Check your first issue of MacAddict if you still have a copy. There was an article about it in there. There was also something about a "Project X" some top secret thing. I don't know if it was real or not, but it was a different way to browse.

OMG! I had a developer version of ProjectX. It was a fly through 3D VR kind of browser.
Open Doc and CyberDog. The last I heard CyberDog was euthanized.

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
Hopefully Keynote will be the first component of a revamped AppleWorks suite. It seems to me that they are testing the waters, and if it is successful they will go all out. I say screw Microsoft, if they don't want to provide a good, affordable office package then they deserve to lose business to Apple. Besides, AppleWorks could really use some updating (even though it is all I have ever needed as a student).

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
right, but at $99 is keynote much more affordable? I mean if it is ever part of a suite it with three or four parts, that is dangerously close to M$ prices...

Re: Which M$ App is next to die?
The current price for Powerpoint by itself is $399. If they can afford a $300 difference for one program, then I think Apple could afford to sell a word proccessor, spreadsheet, and presentation program for $150 total. If the price is reasonable and it is a better program than office, I think Apple could make a killing.
