Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
Hmm, Rage 128 Pro, under a game like lets see RTCW
Rage 128 pro, Max Detail: About 2 frames a second
Radeon 9800 Pro, Mac Detail: About 125 frames a second.
Rage 128 pro, low end detail: 10 frames a second
Radeon 9800 pro, low detail: 250 frames a second
not actual facts, just guesses off of when I tried to play RTCW on my Indigo iMac, and off of what my GF4Ti does now + %40 for the radeon. Just guesses. But I'm trading in my brothers old Rage 128 pro and getting $50 off my Radeon 9800
, the Rage 128s go for about $1.50 on ebay now

Indi, it was a joke about the card. My card rocks 500 meg core memory, 1 gig bus but who cares ,you just want to run games that look purity.

Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
Just a few things about Halo.
I've played about half way though.
The game play rocks, and after all, isn't that what's important?
The hardware demands are ghastly.
My computer P4 3.2 gig/ FX 5800 (running at 5900ultra speed)
can bearly run the game normally with all on high. I still have AA and 2x anisotropic filtering on. I think the game isn't well optimised. It's the worst performing game I've run on this computer. However, it may run much better at lower settings and maybe the mac version will run better.
Bottom line is if you can run it, it's a must have because the gameplay has a great feel to it.
FSAA (and probably AF) doesn't/don't work in Halo, just slow it down. Shut 'em off. Running 52 series drivers, I hope?
These aspects, game engine etc. covered well in Games, here and elsewhere.
[color=darkblue]The Xbox and a PC are not as identical as some would have you believe. There are differences between the platforms in DirectX, and the unified memory architecture of the Xbox can make programming for it quite a bit different than for a PC. Thus, Gearbox actually had a lot more to do in porting Halo than simply allowing the game to run at any resolution and tossing in mouse and keyboard support. Most of the game's shader effects have been rewritten, utilizing a variety of code paths to support everything from fixed-function graphics pipelines to the latest 2.0 shaders in DX9. This makes it an interesting graphics test, if only because there are so few games that utilize 2.0 shaders at all. In the 2.0 shader path, Halo does utilize partial-precision hints, allowing GeForce FX cards to operate using faster 16-bit floating point operations.
It should be noted that neither anti-aliasing nor anisotropic filtering have any affect on the way Halo looks. Enabling these features will only slow things down a lot. This is because several of the game's cooler effects

Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
Any idea how it would run on the Nvidia Gforce FX 5200 (64MB Ram)?
Well, I know the G5 processor will be more than enough for this game, but I was wondering if the 3D card could handle Halo as it was meant to be played (without dropping the quality that is).
Most current games run very well with all settings set to high so I don't think Halo would be much different.
Also, I hope Halo supports the HID manager so I can play it with my iShock gamepad, I think that would simply rock.
Anyway, I demand a demo!

I wouldn't worry about it with a graphics card like that.

Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
It should run OK, but it won't have the pretty effects- the Per-Pixel rendering path isn't working with nVidia cards, leaving them only the Fixed Function path in Mac Halo.
Since intermediate pixel shader versions aren't supported, that would force the 5200 to run PS 2.0... look where the 5600 Ultra tested recently- slower than a Ti 4200 (presumably running PS1.4, its highest supported PS version).
However, the 5200 should be OK for framerates running FF.
Mac Halo is different; it's the first major game on the platform to use those programmable shaders The Steve made such a deal out of when the GF3 debuted at MWSF '01.

Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
I'm suprised it doesnt work, cause the origional Halo was built around the nVidia card (GeForce3 Ti, i think). I would have thought that code would have remained in tact.

True enough; plenty of guile, but little tact...
For some reasonably informed comments and considerable further linkage, including comments from Westlake guys working on the Mac port, try this page.

Halo was not only a landmark title for Bungie, but for MGS (Microsoft Game Studios) as well. It was the title that propelled Xbox into the mainstream and accounted for much of the console

Re: Mac Halo release date anounced! Halo Clan?
These, from one of the links and (unofficially) Westlake's Duane Johnson, sums things up, shortly if not sweetly:

The truth goes like this
All the eye candy via. Pixel Pipeline: Radeon 9600-9800 ONLY, FX don't cut it.
A good looking & very playable Fixed Function path needs a Radeon 7000-9000, or 4Ti/FX.
Don't even think about using an MX with Halo, it will "run", but its more like a crawl.
And don't forget that bus speed IS also important a 9800 in a Quicksilver won't do the Pixel Pipe much good, but it will run Fixed Function very nicely.

On the positive side, tho, remember that the PC/Mac PS2.0/Pixel Pipeline versions get rewritten shaders more complex and better-looking than the Xbox version- tougher and slower to run, but enabling things like simultaneous specular (reflective) lighting and bump-mapping, so that, say, metal can look shiny and rough, and ice bright but cracked and patterned at the same time. (Quite some interesting effects; Xboxers sometimes wonder why surfaces aren't shiny. Either they'e got bargain cards in thier PCs, or they're blind to surfaces having both attributes).
