Got a new PB on 12/31, now a $200 drop

mad  I purchased a new 1GHZ PowerBook on 12/31 to take advantage of deducting it off last years taxes and because the rumor mills said no new hardware updates.
And as my luck would go Steve introduces new PowerBooks at MacWorld and my new PB is no longer top of the line and is selling now for $200 less plus a QuickBooks bundle!  eek

I called my friendly neighborhood Apple store and the manager said "Apple is only offering $200 back to customers that purchased a PB after Jan 1. So I missed it by one day I said, yeah but she says you took advantage of the great double your ram promotion so you are $300 ahead."

So basicly I'm screwed, I don't know how she figures 512MB of ram is a $300 value, I purchased 512MB for my iBook recently for $80. sad

If you bought your RAM from Apple you probably did save that much.  Apple is outrageous on RAM.

From what I hear, Apple has a 30 return policy, and people have threatened to return their systems for things like this.  So just call and raise some hell man.

Apple has 10 day price protection. Call them up and nicely explain your situation and I'm sure they'll be glad to cut you a check.

That happened to me a while back and they were more than happy to make up the price difference. Heck, they gave me enough back that I could buy my iPod.

Re: Got a new PB on 12/31, now a $200 drop

You should have gotten an email...

I got a new PowerBook with the RAM discount on 12/25/02 and then I got an email the day the new PowerBooks were released saying they hadn't shipped my order because they wanted to know if I wanted the new version for the same price. I said sure and they are even letting me have the RAM discount even though this is now DDR ram. THEN I got an email saying I would get the new reduced price on the TiBook I originally ordered but I said no, I cancelled that order and got the 17" one. You didn't get any of these emails? Apple is great, I am so glad they let me do all this cause the new 17" beast has alot of features the 15" I was going to get didn't.

So long,

Unfortunately, I walked into my friendly neighborhood Apple store and brought the PB off the self. I would take what they offered you in a heartbeat. For only $300 more than I paid, I could have the 17".

I called Apple Customer Relations today, and all they would say is we can't offer you any more then the manager of your Apple store.

What a nice way of handle a loyal Apple customer, over the years I have purchased 20 different Apple hardware products, and many more software products.

Was it online or a store?
According to my receipt Apple has a 10 day return date, but, there is $299.90 (10% of the purchase price) fee if opened

512MB for the Powerbook costs $164 from Crucial, so you're out like $35.  (Plus, I wouldn't want to install ANYTHING internally in that Titanium shell anyway.)  And it's not like you didn't know Macworld was almost here (although I never in a million years expected new Powerbook models).

This may sound mean, and I don't mean it to, but that's what you get for listening to the rumor sites. wink

Update 1/12/03

I am very happy to report that my Apple store did finally give me a $200 refund. My faith in Apple has been restored.

Re: Got a new PB on 12/31, now a $200 drop

This is so stupid.  If you know anything about Apple at all, you know that there is a MacWorld Expo in January and July/August and two smaller ones in the spring and fall.  It's the same time every year.  You also know that you can never fully know what will be released at these events.  If you bought a machine just a week prior to the conference, then you should be stuck with it.  All of you who are trying to get exchanges or refunds on this or that because you just couldn't wait one more week need to quit your complaining.  It was your decision to buy, Apple did not make you buy what you did when you did.

Re: Got a new PB on 12/31, now a $200 drop

I bought my 867 tiBook about a week before too. I couldn't wait , even though I knew something new might come out.  Luckily, my TiBook didn't drop in price.  But, the 12 incher is exactly what I wanted.. but hey. that's the price you pay.  any one who is complaining... ever hear of after holiday sales, inventory closeouts, etc?

Re: Got a new PB on 12/31, now a $200 drop

Luckily, Apples tend to hold a higher resale value than other machines.  I buy a new machine every year and sell my old one.  I'm out an average of $300 per year.  That's another great reason to go Mac.

How do you sell them?  I'd gladly upgrade every year if I could do it for $300!  But I hate eBay, and I assume that's how you've got to do it.
